The Sacred Overlap: Learning to Live Faithfully in the Space Between (Seedbed Resources)
Par J. R. Briggs. 2020
The widening of political, racial, generational, and religious differences leads too often to an "us vs. them" mentality. The Sacred…
Overlap communicates a refreshing vision that embraces tension and shows us how to live in radical love and faithfulness between the extremes that isolate and divide people. The gospels display how Jesus was committed to crossing the either/or waters of the cultural and societal wars of his day. His miracles and parables often broke or ignored religious and political lines that seemed all important. He comforted the disturbed and disturbed the comfortable.Using Jesus' example, J. R. Briggs offers a fresh and relevant understanding of evangelism and discipleship in our present time of extreme polarization. Without sacrificing biblical integrity, The Sacred Overlap is a joyful exploration of the complexity of life in the peace of Christ. With careful discernment, Briggs:Shares creative ways to engage with God's mission of ministering to those who are intrigued by Jesus but turned off by church.Explores what it means to be joyful in the midst of heart-wrenching pain and earthly suffering.Models what it means to maintain a posture of convicted civility which emphasizes both grace and truth. The Sacred Overlap helps readers see how Christians are called to live with their feet firmly planted in two different worlds—in both heaven and earth—living naturally with both the sacred and the ordinary. Only then can a Christian be a faithful witness and disciple of Jesus.

The Christian Writer's Manual of Style: 4th Edition
Par Robert Hudson. 2016
The standard style guide of the Christian publishing industry, The Christian Writer&’s Manual of Style, 4th Edition, compiled by veteran Zondervan…
editor Robert Hudson, contains clear guidance on style questions related to religious writing, including many topics not addressed in other references or online.Nearly half of this fourth revision is made up of new material, including information about turning blogs into books, the effects of digital media on writing, &“adverbial doubles,&” &“vanishing accents,&” word-choice strategies, endorser guidelines, and much more. It also contains an all-new &“Word List&” which makes up more than a third of the book. The most needful information remains—entries on capitalization, abbreviation, citations, fictional dialogue, and more—but it has all been updated to keep pace with changes in English language usage. This fourth edition also corresponds with The Chicago Manual of Style, 16th Edition (2010), though it isn&’t afraid to chart new territory where that reference is unhelpful on issues of religious writing.Comprehensive yet easy-to-use, The Christian Writer&’s Manual of Style, 4th Edition, is a go-to resource for Christian authors, pastors, teachers, copy writers, editors, proofreaders, publishing and ministry professionals, executive assistants, and students—anyone who writes or edits as a part of their work or study—and for grammar aficionados everywhere.
The Open Table Participant's Guide, Vol. 1: An Invitation to Know God
Par Donald Miller. 2009
The Open Table introduces believers and nonbelievers to the person and deity of Christ in a new and refreshing way. There…
are many people who argue God doesn’t exist and many who argue God does. Still, millions know that, all arguments aside, what they feel in their souls is a need for God. To some, the idea of searching for God sounds as ridiculous as chasing a leprechaun to get his pot of gold. And yet few go looking for a leprechaun, while millions go on looking for God. At the heart of the Christian story—the story at the heart of The Open Table—is this basic idea: God shows up in the lives of people who search for Him. The Open Table DVD uses state of the art video and the power of personal testimony to put God in front of anyone who has yet to meet Him. The Open Table Participant’s Guide is there for those whose interest is sparked and who want to dig deeper. In the unique and relevant voice of Don Miller, The Open Table introduces people to the person and deity of Christ, and everyone is invited to the table.
The Challenges of Caregiving: Seeing, Serving, Solving
Par Rick Caracciolo. 2019
Man&’s perception, and how to accept aging, has not changed dramatically since the beginning of time or over the last…
220 years as man&’s life expectancy has increased. Man is not a stagnant being, and as Bathauer notes, &“Psychologist tell us that all of life is made up of continuous changes from childhood all the way to old age.&” The last twenty years of life, the stage we call old age, brings about almost as many changes as the first twenty years. Changes in the latter part of life are usually more than all the changes during the first twenty years of life because they carry the threat of loss, disability or other degenerative conditions.Christian counselors are trained in the spiritual and general mental health aspects of aging. Caregivers and family members usually receive their training on the job as a caregiver. As the graying of America continues at an accelerated rate, the Christian counselor, pastor, and caregiver are going to need the tools and resources to counsel and assist in this area. Aging will be an area, which expands into additional areas that will affect everyone in some manner. The Christian counselor, pastor, and caregiver can benefit both professionally and personally by having an understanding of what caregiving is and is not. Also having the knowledge of where to retrieve useable and beneficial information is a blessing to all. It helps to reassure that all involved during this very stressful time period and when major decisions might need to be made to know that there is applicable information at hand. By having this knowledge, it will allow the counselor and caregiver to truly get a better understanding of the aging person. He is now able to help in a spiritual, mental and physical dimension. Again, it is not expected that the counselor, pastor, and caregiver will become a specialist in aging or a gerontologist. The expectation is that the reader will find helpful information as a caregiver and counselor.References1 Ruth M. The Field Guide for Small Group Leaders provides basic training and support to help small group leaders succeed in the…
critical mission of leading others toward spiritual growth and transformation. The premise of serving as a small group leader sounds simple: Invite people to join you in studying the Bible. But the real-world implications of that role are incredibly complex. Today's small group leaders are asked to function as semi-experts in theology, psychology, evangelism, worship, apologetics, counseling, education, and nutrition--all in service to God and His church. Most of today's group leaders receive little or no training on how to carry out this important work. They are told to "Go and make disciples," then left to figure out the details on their own.Sam O'Neal (a small group leader himself), wrote The Field Guide for Small Group Leaders to help fellow leaders navigate this confusion and map out a plan for successful, transformational, and rewarding meetings. The Field Guide provides helpful information on:Curriculum and planning.Learning styles.Icebreakers and learning activities.Crafting discussion questions.Worship and prayer. What to do when things don't go as planned. And more.Whether you lead a small group, life group, or Sunday school class, this guide will give you confidence and practical tools for fostering meaningful connections, genuine community, and spiritual growth that so many are desperate for.

The Problem of Jesus: Answering a Skeptic’s Challenges to the Scandal of Jesus
Par Mark Clark. 2021
The modern world portrays Jesus in many ways for many reasons. Some are well-intentioned but misguided, others are aberrations, still…
others have some but not all the essential keys. In order to see and understand the real Jesus and what the Gospels say about him, we have to see him in his first-century context—and work out from there. Here is a portrait of Jesus that in some ways will affirm what traditional Christianity has always understood about him...and, in other ways, upend it altogether.Award-winning author Mark Clark delves into the person and work of Jesus of Nazareth: his parables and miracles, his controversial challenge of discipleship and obedience, his seemingly insane claim to be God, and what his death and resurrection (if they did happen) actually mean.Mark is unafraid to tackle questions such as:What would first-century Jews have immediately recognized about Jesus that modern Christians often miss? What do the Gospels accomplish, and can we trust them?Is there a problem with science and Jesus' miracles? What are the barriers stopping people from following him?And what is Christianity in light of an accurate portrayal of the object of its faith? The Problem of Jesus engages with ideas from all realms of study: from Malcolm Gladwell and Jordan Peterson to historians, scientists, and philosophers; from N.T. Wright to C.S. Lewis; from Star Wars to Pretty Woman—all unite to form a breathtaking and accurate portrait of Jesus, the man, the message, and the mission, who forever altered the course of human history. "As a former atheist, I would call this book philosophical dynamite...The Problem of Jesus will take your thinking about Jesus—and your relationship with him—to whole new levels." —Pastor and author, Ray Johnston.
