Future-proofed: The Speculative Life of Smart Cities
Par Ilia Antenucci. 2025
Efficient, inclusive, sustainable: these are only some of the concepts through which smart cities have been marketed globally, over the…
past fifteen years at least. But what has really driven smart city projects, governance, and economies? This book argues it is speculation: not merely finance, but a much broader technopolitical force seeking to calculate and shape the future. Smart cities have been testbeds for new technological products, governed through preemptive analytics, and fuelled by high-risk financial investments. Drawing on case studies from Kolkata and Cape Town, this book illustrates how smart city technologies speculate on the future to govern and monetise the present. Today, smart cities might have lost some of their hype already, but their legacies are here to stay, and their ethical and political implications appear more critical than ever. This book offers insights into the speculative forces that undergird urban &‘smartness&’, and into their implications on everyday life, spatial justice, and citizens&’ rights.
This book provides a detailed examination of the questions that preoccupied British alienists throughout the second half of the nineteenth…
century. Was insanity one disorder with different forms or a set of distinct natural kinds that each had different causes, symptoms, and outlooks? Was it possible to devise a standardised classification of the insanities that provides a scientific basis to psychological diagnosis? Could statistics on psychological diagnosis provide data to help reveal the nature of insanity? The classification at the centre of these debates, the Medico-Psychological Association’s Table of the Forms of Insanity, caused deep divisions that took decades to resolve and hampered efforts to develop asylum medical statistics on psychological diagnosis. The use of the classification in national medical statistics was tantamount to being the standard classification for the asylum. As the appeal of statistics grew within medical circles, the debates intensified, and the divisions grew deeper. Despite lofty aims and years of debate, attempts to develop national statistics on psychological diagnosis had achieved very little by the beginning of the twentieth century. The failure of these efforts, hampered by the unwieldy processes adopted by Lunacy administration, led to the Table of the Forms falling into obscurity after its final set of revisions in 1932. In presenting for the first time the debates surrounding the Table of the Forms of Insanity, this volume calls for a re-evaluation of the history of psychiatric classification through its exploration of the underappreciated links between the standardisation of psychological diagnosis and the development of mental health statistics. By interrogating the links between asylum governance and the clinic, this book presents considerations on classification that still resound today, and provides valuable reading for scholars interested in the social history of medicine, the history of psychiatry, and the history of science.
Strength and Conditioning for the Human Weapon System
Par Christopher Myers, Cj French. 2025
A central focus of the US Military is the Human Weapon System (HWS) and the optimization of this weapon system.…
Over the past decade, the Department of Defence has invested in programs termed Human Performance Optimization (HPO) programs. Human performance for the human weapon system is much different than the civilian athlete. Therefore, the human weapon system's rehabilitation and performance training requirements are different and must be considered. This book demonstrates the following to strength coaches and practitioners: Why to view the HWS as a multi-faceted system that requires a more inclusive program than needed by athletes. Provide updated methodology to create a strength and conditioning program specifically for the HWS populations. Introduce and define advanced strength and conditioning methodologies SC professionals use within the US Military and law enforcement performance programs.

Principles of Precision Hormone Therapy: Healthy Aging and Prevention of Chronic Disease
Par Franck Mauvais-Jarvis. 2025
Hormones—such as estrogens, testosterone, thyroid hormones, and growth hormone—are essential for metabolic homeostasis in all cells. However, their levels decline…
with age, contributing to aging and chronic disease. Proper hormone therapy can help delay the onset of age-related diseases, yet there is currently no authoritative, up-to-date resource on precision hormone optimization for healthy aging. Current standard of care textbooks rely on outdated concepts, while books aimed at non-specialist clinicians and patients are often written by non-experts and lack a solid scientific foundation. This book bridges that gap by presenting cutting-edge scientific data and insights from leading academic and private practice experts on the role of hormone optimization in healthy aging. It dispels common misconceptions about hormone therapy risks and highlights the proven benefits of precision hormone treatments. Drawing on both scientific evidence and clinical experience, it explores the distinctions between synthetic hormones and bioidentical, physiological hormones. Designed to challenge conventional thinking, this book aims to inspire discussion and further research among scientists and healthcare practitioners. It is an essential resource for basic and clinical researchers seeking translational knowledge on hormone therapy, as well as clinicians looking to integrate hormone optimization into their practice.

Transgender Sex Work in Sri Lanka: The Politics of Nachchi Sex Workers (Palgrave Advances in Sex Work Studies)
Par Kaushalya Ariyarathne. 2025
"Transgender sex workers&” is a scarcely explored area in academic discourses, garnering widespread interest amongst gender and sexuality scholars around…
the world. This book explores the narratives and experiences of Nachchi sex workers in contemporary Sri Lanka; a local term for a community assigned male at birth but who choose to live as women with a preference for male partners. It explores their lived experiences and stories through unique interviews, critically examining the historical and post-colonial (and post-war) discourses originating from the Sri Lankan state and civil society. It challenges the hegemonic, neo-liberal narratives that tend to homogenise and simplify their subjectivities. It also dissects the realm of &‘politics,&’ particularly subaltern politics and how this colonial population is excluded from the hierarchy of power. This book takes a decolonial approach to the historical knowledge production on Nachchi sex worker subjectivities by unearthing important, yet suppressed verbal histories and narrations of living community members. The author also reflects on her journey, transitioning from a researcher and academic to a full-time politician, a transformation that shapes her evolving perspectives on politics throughout the writing of the book.
