Par Matthew Soules. 2021
"Soules's excellent book makes sense of the capitalist forces we all feel but cannot always name… Icebergs, Zombies, and the…
Ultra Thin arms architects and the general public with an essential understanding of how capitalism makes property. Required reading for those who think tomorrow can be different from today."— Jack Self, coeditor of Real Estates: Life Without DebtIn Icebergs, Zombies, and the Ultra Thin, Matthew Soules issues an indictment of how finance capitalism dramatically alters not only architectural forms but also the very nature of our cities and societies. We rarely consider architecture to be an important factor in contemporary economic and political debates, yet sparsely occupied ultra-thin "pencil towers" develop in our cities, functioning as speculative wealth storage for the superrich, and cavernous "iceberg" homes extend architectural assets many stories below street level. Meanwhile, communities around the globe are blighted by zombie and ghost urbanism, marked by unoccupied neighborhoods and abandoned housing developments.Learn how the use of architecture as an investment tool has accelerated in recent years, heightening inequality and contributing to worldwide financial instability:• See how investment imperatives shape what and how we build, changing the very structure of our communities• Delve into high-profile projects, like the luxury apartments of architect Rafael Viñoly's 432 Park Avenue• Understand the convergence of technology, finance, and spirituality, which together are configuring the financialized walls within which we eat, sleep, and workIncludes dozens of photos and drawings of architectural phenomena that have changed the way we live. Essential reading for anyone interested in architecture, design, economics, and understanding the way our world is formed.Agro-Waste Derived Biopolymers and Biocomposites: Innovations and Sustainability in Food Packaging
Par Santosh Kumar, Avik Mukherjee, Vimal Katiyar. 2024
AGRO-WASTE DERIVED BIOPOLYMERS AND BIOCOMPOSITES This comprehensive book describes the fundamental principles and major advancements in the utilization of agro-waste…
for deriving biopolymers, and their applications to fabricate composite, nanocomposite, and hybrid food packaging films and coatings. The book serves as a complete, systematic, comprehensive account of the contemporary developments in the area of novel and environment-friendly valorization of agro- and food wastes into value-added products like biodegradable polymer and active functional agents for food packaging applications. It also describes the hurdles and challenges in the commercialization of these novel biopolymer-based materials, including their composites, their applications, safety, and legal ramifications. This book consists of fifteen chapters covering different aspects of agro- and food waste utilization, the development of biodegradable polymers, and their composites for sustainable food packaging applications. The first thirteen chapters detail the processing of various agro- and food wastes of plant and animal origin to synthesize different biopolymers, such as starch, cellulose, chitosan, silk proteins, pectin, etc., and their applications for the fabrication of sustainable food packaging materials and composites that are attractive alternatives to synthetic plastic packaging. These chapters also summarize the effectiveness of these biopolymers and their composites in developing active films and edible coatings for shelf-life extension and preservation of perishable foods. A chapter is devoted to issues of biodegradability, including analyses of various biodegradation reactions, such as depolymerization, mineralization, biochemical, and abiotic degradation both in soil and aquatic environments. The book concludes with a chapter addressing the concerns associated with the possible migration of components or additives from these biodegradable packaging into packaged food items. Audience The primary audience for this book is researchers, scientists, and engineers working in food science and technology, food engineering and technology, food biotechnology, sustainable food packaging, etc. Additionally, food entrepreneurs and associated businesses, such as the packaging and coatings industries, will also have a keen interest in the book.Production Control in Practice: A Situation-Dependent Decisions Approach
Par Henny Van Ooijen, Corné Dirne. 2024
Production Control in Practice Practice-oriented coverage of production planning and control processes for goods and services, written for any industry…
Production Control in Practice explores the operational control of production and inventory processes in organizations across industries, covering both tangible and intangible products and offering viable, efficient solutions to characteristic production control problems, such as what goods to produce when and how. A number of examples/stylized applications are included to help readers understand and apply the discussed concepts and theories to their own organizations. This book distinguishes between the control of production units and the control of goods flow between these units and the market and discusses various coordination and material supply control mechanisms relevant to supply chains. It also presents a typology of production situations found in practice, using a structured approach to discussing the relevant control decisions for each situation. This book is unique because (basic) control decisions are discussed for the different characteristic Decoupling Point Control and Production Unit Control situations from a holistic point of view, taking into account both mathematical considerations as well as various situational factors. Sample topics covered in Production Control in Practice include: Terminology and concepts used in production control, including complexity, uncertainty, and flexibilityTypes of release triggers, covering just-in-time versus just-in-case and push versus pull in logisticsHorizontal and vertical decomposition, and time series-related forecasting for stationary demand versus demand with trendOrder size, covering optimal batch size in case of fixed order size, relaxation of assumptions, and single period considerationsMRP systems, covering Material Requirements Planning (MRP-I) and Manufacturing Resource Planning Systems (MRP-II) With excellent coverage of the subject across different products and industries and several examples to help readers follow along, Production Control in Practice is an ideal reference for bachelor students from universities of applied sciences and academic bachelor students, as well as practitioners in related disciplines.Magnesium-Based Energy Storage Materials and Systems

standard accounts of the history of economic thought suggest, eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century women intellectuals were undertaking incisive and gender-sensitive analyses of the economy.Women’s Economic Thought in the Romantic Age argues that established notions of what constitutes economic enquiry, topics, and genres of writing have for centuries marginalised the perspectives and experiences of women and obscured the knowledge they recorded in novels, memoirs, or pamphlets. This has led to an underrepresentation of women in the canon of economic theory. Using insights from literary studies, cultural studies, gender studies, and feminist economics, the book develops a transdisciplinary methodology that redresses this imbalance and problematises the distinction between literary and economic texts. In its in-depth readings of selected writings by Sarah Chapone, Mary Wollstonecraft, Mary Hays, Mary Robinson, Priscilla Wakefield, Mary Ann Radcliffe, and Jane Austen, this book uncovers the originality and topicality of their insights on the economics of marriage, women and paid work, and moral economics.Combining historical analysis with conceptual revision, Women’s Economic Thought in the Romantic Age retrieves women’s overlooked intellectual contributions and radically breaks down the barriers between literature and economics. It will be of interest to researchers and students from across the humanities and social sciences, in particular the history of economic thought, English literary and cultural studies, gender studies, economics, eighteenth-century and Romantic studies, social history, and the history of ideas.Land Rights, Ethno-nationality and Sovereignty in History (Routledge Explorations in Economic History)
