Par David Horowitz. 2024
America is now engulfed in a crisis that goes to the very foundations of its democracy. To destroy Americans&’ pride…
in their heritage and undermine their will to defend it, the attacks on America&’s heritage begin with malicious slanders intended to turn the American dream of equality and freedom into a &“white supremacist&” nightmare. We are told America, from its inception, has been a &“racist&” nation that treats minorities as less than human. We are told America deserves to be destroyed. This destructive lie is now the official doctrine of the Biden White House, the &“woke&” Pentagon, the Democratic Senate, and the curricula of American schools. America Betrayed restores the true history of America&’s achievements and its role as a beacon of freedom. Framed by an account of Martin Luther&’s history and ideas, David Horowitz demonstrates that racial progress in America originates not from Leftist policy but from its founding ideals. America Betrayed is a history and a manifesto focused on the current war to save our country and restore the dignity and freedom of the individual.Canadians Who Innovate: The Trailblazers and Ideas That Are Changing the World

Par Kate Feiffer. 2024
When her professional and family life collide, a playwright starts journaling every morning to push through her writer&’s block in…
this laugh-out-loud and fresh take on family, friendship, and the chaos of midlife. &“[A] winning adult debut…&” –Publishers WeeklyElise Hellman was once heralded by audiences and critics as a &“playwright to watch.&” Then they forgot all about her. When a prestigious theater company unexpectedly offers her a generous commission to write a new play, she has an opportunity to turn her career around. With sixty-five days left until her deadline, Elise starts scribbling a few pages of stream-of-consciousness first thing every morning as a way to get over her writer&’s block—a technique called Morning Pages, popularized in Julia Cameron&’s The Artist&’s Way. What emerges is a witty confessional in which Elise chronicles her life with her teenage stoner son and her overbearing and eccentric mother, who is losing her memory but not her profanity. She writes about her lingering feelings for her ex-husband, her best friend who is acting oddly, and the confusing encounters she has with a handsome stranger in an elevator. As she writes, the marked-up scenes from her play, Deja New, are revealed, as a story within the story. Morning Pages is about what life throws at you when you&’re trying to write. It is both a humorous exploration of the creative process and a relatable coming-of-age tale for the generation sandwiched between caring for their parents and caring for their kids.Vows: The Modern Genius of an Ancient Rite
Par Cheryl Mendelson. 2015
From the bestselling author of Home Comforts comes the story of our wedding vows—what they mean and why they still…
matter. In the West, marrying is so thoroughly identified with ceremonial promises that &“taking vows&” is a synonym for getting married. So, it&’s a surprise to realize that this custom is actually a historical and anthropological oddity. Most of the world, for most of history, married without making promises. And there&’s a reason for that. Marriage by vow presupposes free choice, and free choice makes a love-match possible. It is a very modern arrangement. Vows is both a moving memoir of two marriages and a thoughtful meditation on marriage itself. Cheryl Mendelson tackles the sociology of commitment through our most traditional promises and shows why they endure. In considering the kind of marriage these vows entail, she helps answer some of life&’s most urgent and personal of questions: Could I, would I, or should I make these promises to someone? Using history and literature, the book describes the parameters of the behavior that traditional vows promise and, in doing so, answers a whole series of other questions: Why did wedding-by-vow arise only in the West? Why are they recited in weddings around the world today? Why have these vows lasted for nearly a thousand years? Why does the kind of marriage promised in the vows survive?Allison Fallon&’s Write Your Story provides a simple framework that will help readers capture, in writing, the depth of life…
events and, in turn, to make sense of their lives.Once you understand yourself and your life, you will live with more purpose and confidence. We&’ve all spent seasons reacting to the world around us, as though the world were telling a story and we were simply the audience, bystanders watching it all happen. The result: a life of regret and a feeling that we missed our purpose. Author Allison Fallon has led thousands of people just like you to find greater meaning by helping them write their story. She&’s witnessed the phenomenon of a person stepping back, analyzing their life, and realizing what they&’re good at and what they are not, the types of people who hurt them and those who help, and the things that provide satisfaction and what leaves them empty. And in all this, they find their purpose. They find their story. When you know your story, you know who you are and why you matter. You understand the many ways you can help others, and you develop a resilience over pain that can make you unstoppable. Allison&’s simple formula will help you process your life and get your whole story down—in only five pages! This isn&’t a formula to teach you to write a book (although the exercises may lead to that), but it will help you understand yourself, your story, and your purpose. We will never know who we are until we know our story. And we will never know our story until we take time to write it down. So let&’s begin.Amy Post&’s Out of the Gray, into the Light is a gut-wrenching story of parental helplessness following their daugther&’s diagnosis…
of malignant liver cancer, and it shares the raw, unfiltered emotions of a family suddenly sucked into a healthcare system that often leaves weakened patients to stand silent and alone, in desperate need of an advocate.&“Now I know what it is to advocate for someone, to put everything I have into something outside of myself.&” —Amy Post &“Your daughter has malignant liver cancer.&” For Amy Post and her family, the doctor&’s words shook their world and changed the trajectory of their lives forever. When Amy received a call from her children&’s school telling her that her daughter wasn&’t playing but was instead sitting down on the playground, her mind went into high alert. Erdos was an amazing and prolific mathematician whose life as a world-wandering numerical nomad was legendary. He published almost 1500 scholarly papers before his death in 1996, and he probably thought more about math problems than anyone in history. Like a traveling salesman offering his thoughts as wares, Erdos would show up on the doorstep of one mathematician or another and announce, "My brain is open." After working through a problem, he'd move on to the next place, the next solution. Hoffman's book, like Sylvia Nasar's biography of John Nash, A Beautiful Mind, reveals a genius's life that transcended the merely quirky. But Erdos's brand of madness was joyful, unlike Nash's despairing schizophrenia. Erdos never tried to dilute his obsessive passion for numbers with ordinary emotional interactions, thus avoiding hurting the people around him, as Nash did. Oliver Sacks writes of Erdos: "A mathematical genius of the first order, Paul Erdos was totally obsessed with his subject--he thought and wrote mathematics for nineteen hours a day until the day he died. He traveled constantly, living out of a plastic bag, and had no interest in food, sex, companionship, art--all that is usually indispensable to a human life."The Man Who Loved Only Numbers is easy to love, despite his strangeness. It's hard not to have affection for someone who referred to children as "epsilons," from the Greek letter used to represent small quantities in mathematics; a man whose epitaph for himself read, "Finally I am becoming stupider no more"; and whose only really necessary tool to do his work was a quiet and open mind. Hoffman, who followed and spoke with Erdos over the last 10 years of his life, introduces us to an undeniably odd, yet pure and joyful, man who loved numbers more than he loved God--whom he referred to as SF, for Supreme Fascist. He was often misunderstood, and he certainly annoyed people sometimes, but Paul Erdos is no doubt missed. --Therese LittletonViolent Spring (An Ivan Monk Mystery #1)
