Par Crystal Duffy. 2019
A twenty-nine-year-old mother’s harrowing and inspiring adventure through a high-risk twin pregnancy. One minute Crystal was sitting at a candlelight dinner…
in Paris with her husband. The next she was back home in Houston, sitting in her OB-GYN’s office concerned that she was having a second miscarriage. But she was actually pregnant with twins! Since Crystal and her husband Ed already had a two-year-old daughter, Abigail, she couldn’t imagine why mothering twins would be all that different. That is until she learns her twins have a life-threatening condition called Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome, meaning Baby B is transfusing blood (disproportionately) to Baby A.Crystal is declared too high risk, so her OB sends her to the 5th floor of the Houston Medical Center for the duration of her pregnancy. Sitting alone in her hospital bed, Crystal wonders how she’ll pass the next few weeks, away from her husband and daughter. Soon she embarks on an emotional rollercoaster—from late night emergency ultrasounds to hospital baby blessings, sprinkled with comic relief from nurses and hospital staff.Twin to Twin is a raw and inspirational story filled with tenderness, vulnerability, and humor. It chronicles the wildest, most terrifying and challenging year of Crystal’s life, which is also the most beautiful and eye-opening. Her hope is that it will bring strength to other women dealing with their own personal trials and tragedies, so they can also triumph.Praise for Twin to Twin“An “orphan” disease, expectant mothers with Twin to Twin (and their support systems) should adopt . . . Twin to Twin. Endocrinology is perhaps, the only branch of medicine where stimulation and suppression testing are required as the initial step for…
biochemical confirmation of the clinical condition as hormone secretion is pulsatile. One of the primary needs for an endocrinologist is a pocketbook that can serve as a guide for performing and interpreting these tests. Unfortunately, there is no single source of these protocols, procedures, and interpretation of these tests in the country or even in the Southeast Asia region. This protocol manual is designed to be a ‘ready reckoner’ for endocrinologists for performing these tests. Disorders of various endocrine glands, including pituitary, thyroid, pancreas, adrenal, gonads, and bone and mineral disorders, have been addressed. The book includes prerequisites and indications of a given test, principles of the testing, detailed procedure, and interpretation. Participant information and instruction sheets have been included, when applicable, to be given as a handout to patients prior to these tests. The manual contains algorithms (e.g., for approaching cases with hypoglycemia) and interpretation provided in a tabular format. It also lists troubleshooting measures for specific tests, when applicable. Further, clinical case scenarios substantiated by clinical and radiological images have been incorporated in the manual to highlight the procedure and interpretation of these tests in the management of challenging clinical cases. The manual is designed to be a comprehensive yet concise document covering all these aspects. Besides blood-based investigations, procedures which are undertaken in challenging endocrine scenarios, including inferior petrosal sinus sampling, and adrenal venous sampling have been elucidated in a crisp and practical manner.A History of Maternity Wear: Design, Patterns, and Construction

Times bestselling author Dr. Michael Mosley. The 8-Week Blood Sugar Diet is a radical new approach to the biggest health epidemic threatening us today...Our modern diet, high in low-quality carbohydrates, is damaging our bodies—producing a constant overload of sugar in our bloodstream that clogs up our arteries and piles hidden fat into our internal organs. Drawing on the work of Dr. Roy Taylor—one of the UK’s foremost diabetes experts—and his own experience as a one-time diabetic, Dr. Michael Mosley presents a groundbreaking, science-based, 8-week plan for diabetics who want to reverse their condition (and then stay off medication). it as if it’s just another way—albeit more convenient way—of giving birth.” The twenty-one essays in My Caesarean add back to the conversation the missing voices of a vast, invisible sisterhood. Robin Schoenthaler reflects: “A C-section for us meant life.” And yet, women who don’t give birth vaginally—by choice or necessity—often feel stigmatized. “My son’s birth was not a test I needed to pass,” writes Sara Bates. “As if growing a human inside another human for nine months then caring for it the rest of its life isn’t enough,” adds Mary Pan, herself a physician. Alongside their personal stories, the writers—decorated novelists, poets, and essayists—address the history of the C-section as well as its risks, social inequities, impact on the body, and psychological aftermath. My Caesarean is a heartfelt meditation, offering much-needed comfort through shared experience. Contributors include: Catherine Newman, Judy Batalion, Nicole Cooley, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, Lisa Solod, Misty Urban, Jacinda Townsend, Mary Pan, Robin Schoenthaler, Elizabeth Noll, Jen Fitzgerald, Tyrese Coleman, SooJin Pate, Daniela Montoya-Barthelemy, Cameron Dezen Hammon, LaToya Jordan, Sara Bates, Susan Hoffmann, and Alicia Jo Rabins.
