and direct violence, it examines the harm to wellbeing and learning through a unique exploration of the role of teachers, and confronts the roots of violence in educational settings. Presenting and critiquing a range of pedagogical tools, case examples, and research, it examines how various methods can be used for identifying and proactively responding to conflicts such as injustice, discrimination, and prejudice, among others. Contributors present case studies from a range of global contexts and offer cutting-edge research on the applications of these resources, and how they contextualize peace education. An essential read for educators, teacher educators and peace scholars, it crucially offers pathways for confronting and healing from violence in both formal and informal sites of education.Translation and Race (New Perspectives in Translation and Interpreting Studies)
Par Corine Tachtiris. 2024
Translation and Race brings together translation studies with critical race studies for a long-overdue reckoning with race and racism in…
translation theory and practice. This book explores the "unbearable whiteness of translation" in the West that excludes scholars and translators of color from the field and also upholds racial inequities more broadly.Outlining relevant concepts from critical race studies, Translation and Race demonstrates how norms of translation theory and practice in the West actually derive from ideas rooted in white supremacy and other forms of racism. Chapters explore translation’s role in historical processes of racialization, racial capitalism and intellectual property, identity politics and Black translation praxis, the globalization of critical race studies, and ethical strategies for translating racist discourse. Beyond attempts to diversify the field of translation studies and the literary translation profession, this book ultimately calls for a radical transformation of translation theory and practice. This book is crucial reading for advanced students and scholars in translation studies, critical race and ethnic studies, and related areas, as well as for practicing translators.Christianity and Social Work: Readings on the Integration of Christian Faith and Social Work Practice

Par Tania De Rozario. 2024
In this unusual, engaging, and intimate collection of personal essays, Lambda Literary Award finalist Tania De Rozario recalls growing up…
as a queer, brown, fat girl in Singapore, blending memoir with elements of history, pop culture, horror films, and current events to explore the nature of monsters and what it means to be different.Tania De Rozario was just twelve years old when she was gay-exorcised. Convinced that her boyish style and demeanor were a sign of something wicked, her mother and a pair of her church friends tried to “banish the evil” from Tania. That day, the young girl realized that monsters weren’t just found in horror tales. They could lurk anywhere—including your own family and community—and look just like you. Dinner on Monster Island is Tania’s memoir of her life and childhood in Singapore—where she discovered how difference is often perceived as deviant, damaged, disobedient, and sometimes, demonic. As she pulls back the veil on life on the small island, she reveals the sometimes kind, sometimes monstrous side of all of us. Intertwined with her experiences is an analysis of the role of women in horror. Tania looks at films and popular culture such as Carrie, The Witch, and The Ring to illuminate the ways in which women are often portrayed as monsters, and how in real life, monsters are not what we think. Moving and lyrical, written with earnest candor, and leavened with moments of humor and optimism, Dinner on Monster Island is a deeply personal examination of one woman’s experience grappling with her identity and a fantastic analysis of monsters, monstrous women and the worlds in which they live.Frontiers of Identity: The British and the Others (Routledge Revivals)
Par Robin Cohen. 1994
Originally published in 1994, this book considers one of the enduring themes of social science. How is a national identity…
forged and sustained? How does it change over time? Who is included in the body politic and who is socially excluded? How do the established population, opinion-makers and politicians react to more marginal people, including long-spurned minorities and recent migrants? This original analysis shows how the British as a people are constantly defined and redefined through their interactions with several ‘frontiers of identity’, namely Celts, expatriates, Americans, Europeans, citizens of the Commonwealth and more crucially with ‘aliens’. The alien-British relationship is particularly loaded with uneasiness, aversion and hostility. ‘Aliens’ a category created by what the author calls ‘the frontier guards’ of British identity, are frequently deported or detained. Their sanctuaries are invaded, their legal and humanitarian claims for asylum minutely examined and often denied. This searching exploration of these processes shows how the meaning of who one is depends crucially on who one rejects.Drawing on a wealth of historical scholarship, research compiled at the time of the original publication and contemporary social theory and now reissued with a new Preface this book exposes the unstated assumptions and hidden meanings in the relationship between the ‘British’ and ‘the others'. It uncovers how the British and their rulers seek to reshape their national identity in a difficult period of post-imperial adjustment, relative economic decline and the European integration of the 1990s.The book will be of use to students of sociology, politics, history and European studies. The Word and the World: Explorations in the Form of Sociological Analysis (Routledge Revivals)
Par Michael Mulkay. 1985
First published in 1985, The Word and the World is a significant, empirically-based contribution to the sociological analysis of scientists’…
discourse and scientific culture. It also offers a radical departure from established forms of sociological discourse which has far-reaching implications for all areas of sociological study. The central aim of this book is to widen the range of textual forms used in empirical sociological research, and thereby to increase sociologists’ ability to furnish interesting, valid and practically useful conclusions. The unusual textual forms employed for the purposes of sociological analysis are ‘the play’, ‘the investigative inquiry’, ‘the participant-analyst dialogue’, and ‘the parody’. One of the main substantive topics that provides the material for these explorations in form is the ‘scientific debate’. This book will be of interest to students of sociology, rhetoric, linguistics and science.Lifelong and Continual Learning Dialogue Systems (Synthesis Lectures on Human Language Technologies)
Par Sahisnu Mazumder, Bing Liu. 2024
This book introduces the new paradigm of lifelong and continual learning dialogue systems to endow dialogue systems with the ability…
to learn continually by themselves through their own self-initiated interactions with their users and the working environments. The authors present the latest developments and techniques for building such continual learning dialogue systems. The book explains how these developments allow systems to continuously learn new language expressions, lexical and factual knowledge, and conversational skills through interactions and dialogues. Additionally, the book covers techniques to acquire new training examples for learning new tasks during the conversation. The book also reviews existing work on lifelong learning and discusses areas for future research.Art-Based Games (Routledge Revivals)
Par Don Pavey. 1979
The visitor to an Art Arena game is confronted with an enormous piece of paper covering one wall of the…
room. Groups of players are at work painting, some with spontaneity or abandon, others with thoughtful precision. Back from the wall are knots of players calling our apparently cryptic information to those at work on the paper, or transmitting it in coded sounds using whistles, pipes and various home-made instruments. Colours are phased across the wall, sometimes colliding, sometimes mingling, or encircling each other. But what is the connection between the sound flow and the painting? This book, originally published in 1979, describes the beginnings of a new approach to art education – an approach based on the use of games in art. The games draw not only upon artistic and design skills, but also upon those that teachers in all subjects try to develop in their pupils: logical thinking, breadth of judgement, imagination and sensibility in handling materials and media. They also provide a vehicle for familiarizing players with a wealth of concepts and data from different topics. The approach aims at promoting group work and cooperative interaction, and has proved to be of interest to social workers and to teachers of disabled and difficult children. It has been tried out with an unusual variety of groups, from mixed and low ability to groups of gifted children, students and adults, and while the level of playing has varied, the games have elicited high involvement from participants. While referring to game theory and research, the book is essentially practical, giving instructions for inventing and playing games, and descriptions of a number of games played by different groups. The end of the book gives a detailed list of concepts and suggestions for further reading, and lists of materials and suppliers. This book presents the research outcomes from cooperative projects with industrial partners. It showcases the practical relevance of the research,…

It presents a…
heretofore undocumented study of how these women left Ireland to establish convent schools and colleges for women around the globe. It challenges the dominant narrative that suggests that Irish teaching Sisters, also commonly called nuns, were part of the colonial project, and shows how they developed their own powerful transnational networks. Though they played a role in the education of the ‘daughters of the Empire’, they retained strong bonds with Ireland, reproducing their own Irish education in many parts of the Anglophone world.Cambridge International AS Level Information Technology Student's Book Second Edition
