Par Gregory E Welbaum. 2024
Most food and fiber crops are produced from seed. This means that the world's population is dependent on annual seed…
production for its food supply. Vegetable seed production is much different and more challenging than production of grain crops. This book explains the biology and technology behind producing, maintaining, and enhancing the quality of vegetable seeds from breeding through to the marketed product. It begins with six chapters on a broad range of seed-related topics: the importance of seeds, reproductive biology of plants, genetic improvement strategies, quality assurance of seed production, post-harvest seed enhancement, and organic production. The remaining chapters cover seed production in eleven important vegetable families. Each chapter provides a description of the botany, types and cultivars, genetic improvement, pollination, soil fertility management, pest management, crop production, harvesting, post-harvest handling, and seed yields. The aim of this book is to educate how to produce high-quality vegetable seeds. Incorporating both current methodologies and recent research results, it is suitable for students, researchers, and professionals in the seed industry.Conversion of Water and CO2 to Fuels using Solar Energy: Science, Technology and Materials
Par Oomman K. Varghese, Flavio L. Souza. 2024
Conversion of Water and CO2 to Fuels usingSolar Energy Comprehensive Resource for Understanding the Emerging Solar Technologies for Hydrogen Generation…
via Water Splitting and Carbon-based Fuel Production via CO2 Recycling Fossil fuel burning is the primary source of carbon in the atmosphere. The realization that such burning can harm the life on our planet, has led to a surge in research activities that focus on the development of alternative strategies for energy conversion. Fuel generation using solar energy is one of the most promising approaches that has received widespread attention. The fuels produced using sunlight are commonly referred to as “solar fuels.” This book provides researchers interested in solar fuel generation a comprehensive understanding of the emerging solar technologies for hydrogen generation via water splitting and carbon-based fuel production via CO2 recycling. The book presents the fundamental science, technologies, techno-economic analysis, and most importantly, the materials that are being explored to establish artificial methods of fuel production using solar energy. For the rapid advancement of the field, it is necessary for researchers, particularly for those who are new to the field, to have clear knowledge of various materials studied so far and their performance. For this reason, almost half of the book is dedicated to the discussions on materials and properties. Key topics discussed in the book include: Photocatalytic/photoelectrochemical processes that use semiconductor photocatalysts, including both ceramic and non-ceramic materialsPhotovoltaic assisted electrochemical processesSolar thermochemical processesMolecular photosynthesis Researchers and professionals in the fields of energy and materials and closely related science and engineering disciplines could use this book to aquire clear insights on both mainstream solar fuel technologies and those in the developmental stages.Sustainable Hybrid Energy Systems: Carbon Neutral Approaches, Modeling, and Case Studies
Par Jiuping Xu, Fengjuan Wang. 2024
Sustainable Hybrid Energy Systems Discovering comprehensive approaches to build sustainable hybrid energy systems Hybridization is the eternal theme of human…
energy utilization. However, it has never been more important than it is now because of the urgency of promoting energy transition and achieving carbon neutrality. Therefore, exploring the design, combustion, operation, and policy challenges of sustainable hybrid energy systems becomes increasingly important. Sustainable Hybrid Energy Systems: Carbon Neutral Approaches, Modeling, and Case Studies provides a detailed explanation of these aspects. Dividing hybrid energy systems into three categories—co-located, co-combusted, and co-operated, this book emphasizes the deployment optimization, emission quota allocation, scheduling coordination, and renewable portfolio standards implementation of these systems. The results are essential tools for understanding the current and future of multi-input single-output hybrid energy systems. Sustainable Hybrid Energy Systems readers will also find: Clear logical framework that reveals the constitutes of hybrid energy systems.Systematic technical scheme for building an economic, environmental, flexible, and resilient future energy system.Extensive case studies from single power plant level, multiple power plant level, and grid level.Effective guidelines for wider application of the proposed carbon neutral approaches. Sustainable Hybrid Energy Systems is ideal for power engineers, electrical engineers, scientists in industry, and environmental researchers looking to understand these energy solutions. It will also provide collectible value for libraries. How Do Smart Homes Work? (High Tech Science at Home)

Par Yashica Dutt. 2024
&“…a moving personal story and a useful educational examination of persistent discrimination&”—Kirkus ReviewsFor readers of Caste, the coming-of-age story of…
a Dalit individual that illuminates systemic injustice in India and its growing impact on US society Winner of the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puruskar, 2020Born into a "formerly untouchable manual-scavenging family in small-town India," Yashica Dutt was taught from a young age to not appear &“Dalit looking.&” Although prejudice against Dalits, who compose 25% of the population, has been illegal since 1950, caste-ism in India is alive and well. Blending her personal history with extensive research and reporting, Dutt provides an incriminating analysis of caste&’s influence in India over everything from entertainment to judicial systems and how this discrimination has carried over to US institutions.Dutt traces how colonial British forces exploited and perpetuated a centuries old caste system, how Gandhi could have been more forceful in combatting prejudice, and the role played by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, whom Isabel Wilkerson called &“the MLK of India&’s caste issues&” in her book Caste. Alongside her analysis, Dutt interweaves personal stories of learning to speak without a regional accent growing up and desperately using medicinal packs to try to lighten her skin.Published in India in 2019 to acclaim, this expanded edition includes two new chapters covering how the caste system traveled to the US, its history here, and the continuation of bias by South Asian communities in professional sectors. Amid growing conversations about caste discrimination prompting US institutions including Harvard University, Brandeis University, the University of California system, and the NAACP to add caste as a protected category to their policies, Dutt&’s work sheds essential light on the significant influence caste-ism has across many aspects of US society.Raw and affecting, Coming Out as Dalit brings a new audience of readers into a crucial conversation about embracing Dalit identity, offering a way to change the way people think about caste in their own communities and beyond.
