William C. Summers is an enlightening journey through the fascinating world of microbiology, exploring its history, challenges, and the revolutionary concept of the microbiome. Summers draws from his unique perspective as both a practicing microbiologist and a historian of science, influenced by early microbiological literature and his own extensive career, presenting how our understanding of microbes evolved from concepts of simple germs to complex, essential elements of life. Summers skillfully ties together key players and eras in the microbial sciences into a concise narrative, from early microscopic observations to the revolutionary developments in genetic analysis and metagenomics, highlighting our ever-evolving understanding of the diverse microbial world. Magic Bullets, Miracle Drugs, and Microbiologists is a compelling read for anyone interested in the profound impact of microorganisms on our world. “Bill Summers artfully explains how, over the past century, scientists have synthesized new disciplines and embraced evolving technologies to develop new concepts about how germs behave in microbial communities and what their relationship is to the environment, human health, and epidemic diseases. Elastic wave propagation applies to a wide variety of fields, including seismology, non-destructive testing, energy resource exploration, and site characterization.…
New applications for elastic waves are still being discovered. Theory of Elastic Wave Propagation and its Application to Scattering Problems starts from the standpoint of continuum mechanics, explaining stress and strain tensors in terms of mathematics and physics, and showing the derivation of equations for elastic wave motions, to give readers a stronger foundation. It emphasizes the importance of Green’s function for applications of the elastic wave equation to practical engineering problems and covers elastic wave propagation in a half-space, in addition to the spectral representation of Green’s function. Finally, the MUSIC algorithm is used to address inverse scattering problems. Offers comprehensive coverage of fundamental concepts through to contemporary applications of elastic wave propagation Bridges the gap between theoretical principles and practical engineering solutions The book’s website provides the author’s software for analyzing elastic wave propagations, along with detailed answers to the problems presented, to suit graduate students across engineering and applied mathematics.Life After Doom: Wisdom and Courage for a World Falling Apart

look like when hate becomes more popular? In recent years, author and activist Brian McLaren has sensed a widespread emotional shift among growing numbers of people. More and more friends, colleagues, students, and readers confess their sense of futility, their feelings of frustration bordering on despair. They feel that human civilization has passed certain tipping points and that a tide of doom is inexorably rising. This feeling creates a deep inner divide, a tension between a sincere and hopeful commitment to action for the common good on the one hand, and on the other, a feeling that no actions can prevent the arrival of an undesirable or even dystopian future.Life After Doom is a sober analysis of how things stand in relation to climate breakdown, and a deeply insightful exploration of the challenge of living well, maintaining resilience and growing in wisdom and love in the face of nations, ecosystems, economies, religions, and other institutions in disarray. Brian McLaren is the author of Faith After Doubt and Do I Stay Christian? and is a leading and authoritative voice at the intersection of religious faith and contemporary culture.'A book of rare wisdom, genuinely profound in depth and scope'DIANA BUTLER BASSThis undergraduate-level textbook offers a unique and in-depth approach to the study of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. It covers the…
fundamentals of thermodynamics using both traditional and postulatory approaches, including origin of the concept of thermodynamic entropy, Euler’s equation, Gibbs-Duhem relations, stability of equilibrium, and the concept of thermodynamic potentials, and that of independent thermodynamic observables. The book then delves into the microscopic foundation of thermodynamics, starting with the kinetic theory and highlighting its historical development. Boltzmann's concept of entropy is explored, along with its applications in deriving Planck’s, Bose’s, Bose-Einstein, and Fermi-Dirac distribution functions. The formal structure of classical and quantum statistical mechanics is built based on the concept of statistical entropy and the maximum entropy principle and used to investigate in detail the thermodynamic properties of ideal classical and quantum systems. The book also covers phase transitions, simple theory of critical phenomena, and the theory of interacting van der Waals gases. Throughout the text, the book provides historical context, enriching the reader's understanding. This textbook is a valuable resource for undergraduate physics students, offering comprehensive coverage, including overlooked topics, and a historical perspective on thermodynamics and statistical mechanics.Actinomycetes are a group of Gram-positive bacteria of which many representatives are prominent for being prolific producers of bioactive natural…
products including antibiotics, fungicides, antitumor agents, or immunosuppressants. SARP transcriptional regulators are widely distributed among actinomycetes, especially in streptomycetes and are known to activate antibiotic biosynthesis. The set of genes responsible for the production of natural products, including pathway specific transcriptional regulators such as SARPs, are typically located in contiguous regions of the genome known as "biosynthetic gene clusters" (BGCs). In this book, Oona Rössler reports on the activation of antibiotic BGCs in selected actinomycetes strains upon heterologous expression of the SARP-type regulator PapR2 from Streptomyces pristinaespiralis. Applying a bioinformatic screening for the abundance of SARP genes and SARP consensus sequences as part of BGCs, the author has selected actinomycetes candidate strains from the DSMZ strain collection for heterologous SARP expression. It is shown that overexpression of papR2 increased the production of predominantly unknown antimicrobial compounds in more than half of the selected actinomycetes strains, as observed by bioassays against different microbial test strains including bacteria and fungi.Kew - Parched: 50 plants that thrive and survive in a dry garden

truth, and the necessity of scientific laws within a moderate realist and empiricist perspective. Accordingly, good arguments in favour of the existence of unobservable entities postulated by our best theories, such as electrons, must be inductively grounded on perceptual experience and not their explanatory power as most defenders of scientific realism claim. Similarly, belief in the reality of dispositions such as causal powers which ground the natural necessity of scientific laws must be based on experience. Hence, this book offers a synthetic presentation of an original metaphysics of science, namely a metaphysics of properties, both categorical and dispositional, while at the same time opposing strong versions of necessitarism according to which laws are true in all possible worlds. The main theses and arguments are clearly presentedin a non-technical way. Thus, on top of being of interest to the specialists of the topics discussed, it is also useful as a textbook in courses for third year and more advanced university students. This book focuses on methods of how to understand the relationship between the structure and physical properties of polymers from…
the microscopic point of view on the basis of experimental and theoretical methodologies. It is the second volume of a two volume set with Structural Science of Crystalline Polymers. The first volume of the series, “Structural Science of Crystalline Polymers: Basic Concepts and Practices” describes the details of techniques for analysis of the hierarchical structure of crystalline polymers from both the experimental and theoretical points of view. Readers of the first volume who master the concrete techniques and concepts necessary for the analysis of the structure of polymers are now invited to begin this second volume. The methods introduced in this book are useful not only for understanding the physical properties of crystalline regions but also for interpreting the bulk properties of polymer materials from the 3D structural point of view. Forthis purpose, a concrete description is provided so that readers can use the theory or the program in the actual interpretation of physical properties. The physical properties of polymers are intimately related to the structural evolution in the crystallization process and also the structural changes in the samples subjected to an external field. Concrete methods and examples are introduced for these studies, making the book a useful and practical guide for young professional researchers, including those working in industry. At the same time, it can also be used as an excellent reference for graduate-level students.
