The most compelling account of King’s life in a generation.” —Mark Whitaker, The Washington Post“No book could be more timely than Jonathan Eig’s sweeping and majestic new King . . . Eig has created 2023′s most vital tome.” —Will Bunch, The Philadelphia InquirerHailed by The New York Times as “the new definitive biography,” King mixes revelatory new research with accessible storytelling to offer an MLK for our times.Vividly written and exhaustively researched, Jonathan Eig’s King: A Life is the first major biography in decades of the civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.—and the first to include recently declassified FBI files. In this revelatory new portrait of the preacher and activist who shook the world, the bestselling biographer gives us an intimate view of the courageous and often emotionally troubled human being who demanded peaceful protest for his movement but was rarely at peace with himself. He casts fresh light on the King family’s origins as well as MLK’s complex relationships with his wife, father, and fellow activists. King reveals a minister wrestling with his own human frailties and dark moods, a citizen hunted by his own government, and a man determined to fight for justice even if it proved to be a fight to the death. As he follows MLK from the classroom to the pulpit to the streets of Birmingham, Selma, and Memphis, Eig dramatically re-creates the journey of a man who recast American race relations and became our only modern-day founding father—as well as the nation’s most mourned martyr. In this landmark biography, Eig gives us an MLK for our times: a deep thinker, a brilliant strategist, and a committed radical who led one of history’s greatest movements, and whose demands for racial and economic justice remain as urgent today as they were in his lifetime.Includes 8 pages of black-and-white photographsFacilitating Counseling Groups: A Leader's Guide For Group-Based Counseling Ministry
Par Brad Hambrick, John Chapman. 2023
Leading a counseling group is different from leading a general discipleship group, even if both exist at the same church.…
A counseling group focuses on a specific need, garners heightened levels of vulnerability about matters of greater sensitivity and requires more skill and intentionality from its leader. When a layperson is well-equipped, this kind of ministry is tremendously rewarding, as they see God multiply the work he did in their life with people walking a similar journey. Brad Hambrick and John Chapman equip lay leaders to be effective in a group-based counseling ministry within the church. By learning how to use their life experiences and a group curriculum to help others overcome a life-dominating struggle of sin or suffering, leaders will learn to share the comfort and hope for change that can only come from God.A NATIONAL BESTSELLER! Journalist Sarah Stankorb outlines how access to the internet—its networks, freedom of expression, and resources for deeply…
researching and reporting on powerful church figures—allowed women to begin dismantling the false authority of evangelical communities that had long demanded their submission. A generation of American Christian girls was taught submitting to men is God&’s will. They were taught not to question the men in their families or their pastors. They were told to remain sexually pure and trained to feel shame if a man was tempted. Some of these girls were abused and assaulted. Some made to shrink down so small they became a shadow of themselves. To question their leaders was to question God. All the while, their male leaders built fiefdoms from megachurches and sprawling ministries. They influenced politics and policy. To protect their church&’s influence, these men covered up and hid abuse. American Christian patriarchy, as it rose in political power and cultural sway over the past four decades, hurt many faithful believers. Millions of Americans abandoned churches they once loved. Yet among those who stayed (and a few who still loved the church they fled), a brave group of women spoke up. They built online megaphones, using the democratizing power of technology to create long-overdue change. In Disobedient Women, journalist Sarah Stankorb gives long-overdue recognition for these everyday women as leaders and as voices for a different sort of faith. Their work has driven journalists to help bring abuse stories to national attention. Stankorb weaves together the efforts of these courageous voices in order to present a full, layered portrait of the treatment of women and the fight for change within the modern American church.Disobedient Women is not just a look at the women who have used the internet to bring down the religious power structures that were meant to keep them quiet, but also a picture of the large-scale changes that are happening within evangelical culture regarding women&’s roles, ultimately underscoring the ways technology has created a place for women to challenge traditional institutions from within.Dead Weight: Essays on Hunger and Harm
Par Emmeline Clein. 2024
A personal and cultural look at the dark underbelly of Western beauty standards and the lethal culture of disordered eating…
they've wrought&“Electric with insight, and suffused with a strange, stubborn tenderness—a deep regard for what intimacy, hope, and resistance might look like in a world where women are taught to devote their lives to destroying themselves.&” —Leslie Jamison, author of The RecoveringIn Dead Weight, Emmeline Clein recounts her struggle with disordered eating alongside the stories of other women: historical figures, pop culture celebrities, and the girls she&’s known and loved. Through the story of her own sickness, the raw recollections of interview subjects, and dispatches from social media rabbit holes, Clein challenges stereotypes and renders statistics and science deeply personal and urgent. From her first encounters with icons of the thin ideal to her years ricocheting between hunger and bingeing, from the pro-anorexia blog that unexpectedly saved someone&’s life to the residential treatment centers that make so many people sicker, from a wrenching elegy for those who didn&’t survive to a manifesto for sisterhood, solidarity, and recovery, Clein uncovers girlhood&’s appetites and injuries to reveal the economic, cultural, and political history of an epidemic.Dead Weight makes the case that we are faced with a culture of suppression, self-denial, and self-harm, an insidious, pervasive, and dangerous American cult of femininity rooted in racism and misogyny. Tracing the medical and cultural histories of anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder and investigating the recent rise of orthorexia, Clein reveals the economic conditions underpinning diet culture, and grapples with the ways today&’s feminism can be complicit in propping up the fetish of self-shrinking.Drawing on a kaleidoscopic array of sources—from cult classic films like Jennifer&’s Body to the aughts-era Tumblrverse, the writing of Simone Weil, Chris Kraus, and Anne Boyer to the medieval canon of anorexic saints—Clein calls for a feminism that doesn&’t compel women to shrink their bodies to increase their value, urging radical acceptance of all our appetites instead: for food, connection, and love. A sharp, perceptive, and revelatory polemic about the external forces that shape our lives, Dead Weight is electrifying, unapologetically bold, and fiercely compassionate.Social Formations in the Ancient World: From Evolution of Humans to the Greek Civilisation

Par Héctor Fernández L’Hoeste, Juan Poblete. 2024
How online humor influences politics and culture in Latin America This volume is the first to provide a comprehensive…
Latin American perspective on the role of humor in the Spanish- and Portuguese-language internet, highlighting how the production and circulation of online humor influence the region’s relation to democracy and civil society and the production of meaning in everyday life. Several case studies consider memes, including discussions of political cartoons in Mexico and imagery that portrays the mismanagement of natural disasters in Puerto Rico. Essays on Brazil examine how memes are shared on WhatsApp by Jair Bolsonaro supporters and how the Instagram account Barbie Fascionista offers memes as political commentary. Other case studies consider video content, including the sketches of Argentinian comedian Guillermo Aquino, the short-form material of Chilean vlogger Germán Garmendia, and a satirical YouTube column created by journalists in Colombia. Contributors also offer new methodologies for studying the laughable on social media, including a model for analyzing fake Twitter accounts. Internet, Humor, and Nation in Latin America demonstrates that internet humor can generate novel means of public interaction with the political and cultural spheres and create greater expectations of governmental accountability and democratic participation. This volume shows the importance of paying serious attention to humorous digital content as part of contemporary culture.Contributors: Eva Paulina Bueno | Juan Poblete | Alberto Centeno-Pulido | Damián Fraticelli | Juan Carlos Rodríguez | Viktor Chagas | Paul Alonso | Ulisses Sawczuk da Silva | Héctor Fernández L'Hoeste | Alejandra Nallely Collado Campos | R. Par Ashleigh Greene Wade. 2024
In Black Girl Autopoetics Ashleigh Greene Wade explores how Black girls create representations of themselves in digital culture with the speed…
and flexibility enabled by smartphones. She analyzes the double bind Black girls face when creating content online: on one hand, their online activity makes them hypervisible, putting them at risk for cyberbullying, harassment, and other forms of violence; on the other hand, Black girls are rarely given credit for their digital inventiveness, rendering them invisible. Wade maps Black girls’ everyday digital practices, showing what their digital content reveals about their everyday experiences and how their digital production contributes to a broader archive of Black life. She coins the term Black girl autopoetics to describe how Black girls’ self-making creatively reinvents cultural products, spaces, and discourse in digital space. Using ethnographic research into the digital cultural production of adolescent Black girls throughout the United States, Wade draws a complex picture of how Black girls navigate contemporary reality, urging us to listen to Black girls’ experience and learn from their techniques of survival.Industrialization in Ethiopia: The Example of the Textile Industry (Sozialwissenschaftliche Zugänge zu Afrika)
Par Reimer Gronemeyer, Michaela Fink. 2023
Ethiopia, though remaining one of the least urbanised countries in the world, has taken impressive actions to transform the state…
into a more industrialized nation.Several industrial parks have been built in recent years throughout the whole country. The textile sector is one of these sectors. The textile industry is expected to provide employment for hundreds of thousands and thus improve people's living conditions and contribute to the development of the country. Major reason for asian investors to shift their focus to Ethiopia are extremely low wages and the lower production costs involved. The Ethiopian textile industry has to deal with high rates of labor turnover and absenteeism. From the perspective of the mostly international managers the reason for turnover and absenteeism is often attributed to the 'mindset' of the predominantly female workforce. A research project financed by the German Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung is looking at reasons and possible measures to solve this problem. Results of this project (conducted at the University of Giessen by Michaela Fink and Reimer Gronemeyer together with Ethiopian colleagues are presented in this book. Experts from Ethiopia and Germany are presenting the history of the textile industry in Ethiopia and the coming development. All this is framed by the discussion of present crisis - Covid-19; the war - in Ethiopia). The Lion in the Living Room: How House Cats Tamed Us and Took Over the World
Par Abigail Tucker. 2016
A New York Times bestseller about how cats conquered the world and our hearts in this &“deep and illuminating perspective…
on our favorite household companion&” (Huffington Post).House cats rule bedrooms and back alleys, deserted Antarctic islands, even cyberspace. And unlike dogs, cats offer humans no practical benefit. The truth is they are sadly incompetent mouse-catchers and now pose a threat to many ecosystems. Yet, we love them still. In the &“eminently readable and gently funny&” (Library Journal, starred review) The Lion in the Living Room, Abigail Tucker travels through world history, natural science, and pop culture to meet breeders, activists, and scientists who&’ve dedicated their lives to cats. She visits the labs where people sort through feline bones unearthed from the first human settlements, treks through the Floridian wilderness in search of house cats-turned-hunters on the loose, and hangs out with Lil Bub, one of the world&’s biggest celebrities—who just happens to be a cat. &“Fascinating&” (Richmond Times-Dispatch) and &“lighthearted&” (The Seattle Times), Tucker shows how these tiny felines have used their relationship with humans to become one of the most powerful animals on the planet. A &“lively read that pounces back and forth between evolutionary science and popular culture&” (The Baltimore Sun), The Lion in the Living Room suggests that we learn that the appropriate reaction to a house cat, it seems, might not be aww but awe.Arab-Iranian Relations Since the Arab Uprisings (Durham Modern Middle East and Islamic World Series)
Par Mahjoob Zweiri. 2024
Unlike most writing on Arab-Iran relations, which looks at specific episodes and specific countries, this book, taking a long term…
view, assesses the overall dynamics of the relationship, discussing in particular how far religion or politics drives the relationship. It argues that although Iran asserts that religion is a key factor underpinning a coherent approach to international relations, in fact what turns out to be the key factor is the politics of particular circumstances and Iran’s specific interests. The book considers Iran’s differing reactions to the Arab uprisings of 2011 onwards, showing that while Iran supported the uprisings in some countries it sided with repressive governments in other countries. The book also examines Iran’s reaction to its own outbreak of popular discontent in 2009 which was controlled by what has been considered as severe repression and explores how Iran is viewed by ordinary people in different Arab countries.Chapter 1 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.Parts Work: An Illustrated Guide To Your Inner Life

a wide readership.” — Cleveland Plain DealerIn 1955 the killers of Emmett Till, a black Mississippi youth, were acquitted because they were white. Forty years later, despite the strong DNA evidence against him, accused murderer O. J. Simpson went free after his attorney portrayed him as a victim of racism. Par Deborah Tannen. 1979
At home, on the job, in a personal relationship, it's often not what you say but how you say it…
that counts.Deborah Tannen revolutionized our thinking about relationships between women and men in her #1 bestseller You Just Don't Understand. In That's Not What I Meant!, the internationally renowned sociolinguist and expert on communication demonstrates how our conversational signals—voice level, pitch and intonation, rhythm and timing, even the simple turns of phrase we choose—are powerful factors in the success or failure of any relationship. Regional speech characteristics, ethnic and class backgrounds, age, and individual personality all contribute to diverse conversational styles that can lead to frustration and misplaced blame if ignored—but provide tools to improve relationships if they are understood. At once eye-opening, astute, and vastly entertaining, Tannen's classic work on interpersonal communication will help you to hear what isn't said and to recognize how your personal conversational style meshes or clashes with others. It will give you a new understanding of communication that will enable you to make the adjustments that can save a conversation . . . or a relationship.Blurring Timescapes, Subverting Erasure: Remembering Ghosts on the Margins of History
Par Sarah Surface-Evans, A. E. Garrison, Kisha Supernant. 2020
What happens when we blur time and allow ourselves to haunt or to become haunted by ghosts of the past?…
Drawing on archaeological, historical, and ethnographic data, Blurring Timescapes, Subverting Erasure demonstrates the value of conceiving of ghosts not just as metaphors, but as mechanisms for making the past more concrete and allowing the negative specters of enduring historical legacies, such as colonialism and capitalism, to be exorcised.God and the Afterlife: The Groundbreaking New Evidence for God and Near-Death Experience
Par Jeffrey Long, Paul Perry. 2016
Based on the largest near-death experience study in history, involving 3,000 people from diverse backgrounds and religious traditions, including nonbelievers,…
God and the Afterlife presents startling evidence that a Supreme Being exists—and there is amazing consistency about what he is like.In his bestselling book Evidence of the Afterlife, Dr. Jeffrey Long showed us that there is a strong scientific case for life after death. Now, he goes further, revealing evidence that God is real. At the Near Death Experience Research Foundation, Dr. Long studied the stories of thousands of people who have journeyed to the afterlife. Though there are a wide variety of differences in how people experience NDEs—some see a bright light, others go through a tunnel, still others experience a review of their life—he discovered that many of the accounts shared a remarkably similar description of God; a Supreme Being who radiated love and grace.Expanding on his analysis begun in Evidence of the Afterlife, God and the Afterlife is the first intensive exploration of the people who have reported going to the frontier of heaven, met God, and have returned to share their journey. Groundbreaking and profound, it provides new insight into the human experience and expands our notions of mortality, offering possibility, hope, and comfort.Living the Message: Daily Reflections with Eugene Peterson
