Vietnam, Territoriality and the South China Sea: Paracel and Spratly Islands (Routledge Security in Asia Series)
Par Hãn Nguyên Nguyễn Nhã. 2019
The conflict in the South China Sea, especially the sovereignty over Paracel and Spratly Islands, is of international interest and…
significance. Territorial claims from various countries impact on maritime freedom and result in the exploitation of natural resources in either international waters or other claimant countries’ exclusive economic zones. This book analyses Vietnam’s claim of sovereignty over Paracel and Spratly Islands. Based on a book originally published in Vietnamese, the author offers a historical analysis to examine the sovereignty of the islands from multiple perspectives.Written in English on the topic and based on rigorous analysis of historical, legal and technical evidence, the book makes the case for Vietnam’s sovereignty over Paracel and Spratly Islands. It also provides an investigation of how Vietnam has affirmed its claim of sovereignty over the islands and a discussion of how Vietnam’s claim has been received by the international community, particularly by China. The book touches on a very sensitive, topical issue of international importance with wide-ranging and serious consequences. It will be of interest to academics in the fields of Asian security studies and Southeast Asian history and politics.Disaster Victim Identification: Experience and Practice (Global Perspectives on Disaster Victim Identification)

Par Sara Mohr, Shane M. Thompson. 2022
Power and Identity at the Margins of the Ancient Near East rethinks the dichotomy between antiquated terms such as “core”…
and “periphery,” explores lived realities in the margins of central authority, and centers those margins as places of resistance and power in their own right. The borderlands of hegemonic entities within the Near East and Egypt pressed against each other, creating cities and societies with influence from several competing polities. The peoples, cities, and cultures that resulted present a unique lens by which to examine how states controlled and influenced the lives, political systems, and social hierarchies of these subjects (and vice versa). This volume addresses the distinct traditions and experiences of areas beyond the core; terminology used when discussing empire, core, periphery, borderlands, and frontiers; conceptualization of space; practices and consequences of warfare, captive-taking, and slavery; identity- and secondary state–formation; economy and society; ritual; diplomacy; and the negotiation of claims to power. It is imperative that historians and social scientists understand the ways in which these cultures developed, spread, and interacted with others along frontier edges. Using an intersectional approach across disciplines, Power and Identity at the Margins of the Ancient Near East brings together professionals from archaeology, religious studies, history, sociology, and anthropology to make new contributions to the study of the frontier. Par Yamil Avivi, Jason Chernesky, LeiLani Dowell, Anna Lvovsky, Queer Newark Oral History Project, Mary Rizzo, Christina Strasburger, Dominique Rocker, Peter Savastano, Timothy Stewart-Winter, Kristyn Scorsone, Danielle M. Shields, Carse Ramos, Whitney Strub. 2024
Histories of gay and lesbian urban life typically focus on major metropolitan areas like San Francisco and New York, opportunity-filled…
destinations for LGBTQ migrants from across the country. Yet there are many other queer communities in economically depressed cities with majority Black and Hispanic populations that receive far less attention. Though just a few miles from New York, Newark is one of these cities, and its queer histories have been neglected—until now. Queer Newark charts a history in which working-class people of color are the central actors and in which violence, poverty, and homophobia could never suppress joy, resistance, love, and desire. Drawing from rare archives that range from oral histories to vice squad reports, this collection’s authors uncover the sites and people of Newark’s queer past in bars, discos, ballrooms, and churches. Exploring the intersections of class, race, gender, and sexuality, they offer fresh perspectives on the HIV/AIDS epidemic, community relations with police, Latinx immigration, and gentrification, while considering how to best tell the rich and complex stories of queer urban life. Queer Newark reveals a new side of New Jersey’s largest city while rewriting the history of LGBTQ life in America.Tendings: Feminist Esoterisms and the Abolition of Man
Par Nathan Snaza. 2024
In Tendings, Nathan Snaza brings contemporary feminist and queer popular culture’s resurging interest in esoteric practices like tarot and witchcraft…
into conversation with Black feminist and new materialist thought. Analyzing writing and performances by Maryse Condé, Barbara Ehrenreich and Deirdre English, Starhawk, Christina Sharpe, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, and others, Snaza introduces his theory of tending as a concept that links ontology, attunement, care, and anticipatory action to explore how worlds persist through everyday acts of participation. In contrast to the universalizing presuppositions of the enlightenment, Snaza shows how certain feminist occult and esoteric practices constitute what he calls an endarkenment that embraces decolonial spiritual knowledge. Highlighting how endarkenment practices challenge universal presumptions and reject the racializing and colonialist mission of enlightenment modernity, Snaza demonstrates the ways esoterism affirms a pluriversal worldview that reimagines what it means to live in a more-than-human world. This book is a biography of Eisaku Satō (1901-75), who served as prime minister of Japan from 1964 to 1972,…
before Prime Minister Abe the longest uninterrupted premiership in Japanese history. The book focuses on Satō’s management of Japan’s relations with the United States and Japan’s neighbours in East Asia, where Satō worked to normalize relations with South Korea and China. It also covers domestic Japanese politics, particularly factional politics within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), where Satō, as the founder of what would become the largest LDP faction, was at the centre of LDP politics for decades. The book highlights Satō’s greatest achievement – the return of Okinawa from United States occupation - for which, together with the establishment of the non-nuclear principles, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the only Japanese to receive the Prize. The Atlantic Slave Trade in World History (Themes in World History)

an analysis of how debates have changed in light of recent key events such as the Black Lives Matter movement.Primarily focused on the Atlantic Slave Trade, this study places slavery within a broader world context and includes significant detailed coverage of Africa. With a chronological approach, it guides students through the origins of the Atlantic Slave Trade to its expansion and eventual abolition. Its final chapters explore the legacy of the Atlantic Slave Trade by comparing it to other systems of slavery outside of the Atlantic region, and analyze the persistence of modern-day slavery. As well as offering an analysis of historiography, the updated bibliography and conclusion, which considers the recent Black Lives Matter protests and their aftermath, provide a fresh account of how slavery has shaped our understanding of the modern world.Unmatched in its breadth of information, chronological sweep, and geographical coverage, The Atlantic Slave Trade in World History is the most useful introductory resource for all students who study the Atlantic Slave Trade in a world context.Pocket Genius Countries of the World (Pocket Genius)

www.luminosoa.org to learn more.Muddy Thinking in the Mississippi River Delta uses the story of mud to answer a deceptively simple question: How can a place uniquely vulnerable to sea level rise be one of the nation's most promiscuous producers and consumers of fossil fuels? Organized around New Orleans and South Louisiana as a case study, this book examines how the unruly Mississippi River and its muddy delta shaped the people, culture, and governance of the region. It proposes a framework of "muddy thinking" to gum the wheels of extractive capitalism and pollution that have brought us to the precipice of planetary collapse. Muddy Thinking calls upon our dirty, shared histories to address urgent questions of mutual survival and care in a rapidly changing world.Black Clergy in the Church of England: Towards a Sense of Belonging
Par Ericcson T. Mapfumo. 2024
This book explores the experiences of ordinands and Black clergy of the Church of England (CofE). An increasing number of…
Black ordinands (trainees) from African and Caribbean heritages are choosing a ministerial pathway in the Anglican Communion, which has necessitated insights which recognise what they have to bring from their place of origin. Accounts of some of their relationships in the Church of England have been documented and reports on the issues and challenges of institutionalised racism. Anecdotal reference also suggests that the CofE has become a White institution which has not supported its Black clergy in their ministry. The purpose of this book is to present the lived experience of Black clergy in the Church of England, while highlighting some of the challenges they face and to offer solutions to make the church anti-racist.Petun to Wyandot: The Ontario Petun from the Sixteenth Century (Mercury Series)
Par Charles Garrad. 2014
In Petun to Wyandot, Charles Garrad draws upon five decades of research to tell the turbulent history of the Wyandot…
tribe, the First Nation once known as the Petun. Combining and reconciling primary historical sources, archaeological data and anthropological evidence, Garrad has produced the most comprehensive study of the Petun Confederacy. Beginning with their first encounters with French explorer Samuel de Champlain in 1616 and extending to their decline and eventual dispersal, this book offers an account of this people from their own perspective and through the voices of the nations, tribes and individuals that surrounded them.Through a cross-reference of views, including historical testimony from Jesuits, European explorers and fur traders, as well as neighbouring tribes and nations, Petun to Wyandot uncovers the Petun way of life by examining their culture, politics, trading arrangements and legends. Perhaps most valuable of all, it provides detailed archaeological evidence from the years of research undertaken by Garrad and his colleagues in the Petun Country, located in the Blue Mountains of Central Ontario. Along the way, the author meticulously chronicles the work of other historians and examines their theories regarding the Petun's enigmatic life story.Scripting Feminist Ethics in Teacher Education (Education)
Par Michelle Forrest, Linda Wheeldon. 2019
What is the value and place of feminist teaching in common schooling and teacher education? In an open style of…
writing in philosophy of education, the authors combine original dramatized case studies and allegorical, first-person narratives to analyze key concepts for teachers in relation to radical feminist consciousness-raising. They examine values relativism as antithetical to “good” teaching; the history and practice of feminist consciousness-raising as corrective to the dominant model of moral deliberation in professional ethics; youth cyber-bullying as an example of Italian feminist philosopher Adriana Caverero’s claim that ‘horror is the face of woman;’ and the value of paradox, contradiction and myth in counter-balancing material-realist certainty in teaching, research, and policy-making in public education. Supplements to the five chapters offer additional ideas for introducing feminist teaching practices, through discussion and performance, into professional ethics for pre- and in-service teacher education. This book is published in English. The Routledge International Handbook on Decolonizing Justice (Routledge International Handbooks)

Par Cécile Renouard, Frédérique Brossard Børhaug, Ronan Le Cornec, Jonathan Dawson, Alexander Federau, David Ries, Perrine Vandecastele, Nathanaël Wallenhorst. 2023
This book functions as a practical guide to support teachers and higher education institutions in the construction of their courses…
and programmes in light of the Anthropocene. It is divided into two complementary parts. The first part lays the theoretical foundations of what is a transition pedagogy and provides a pedagogical framework. It offers practical tools and didactic levers to be used by teachers and institutions to build a truly transformative pedagogy for students, with reference to universities already experimenting such alternative methods. The second part presents an analysis of the pedagogical tools and levers experienced in worldwide institutions, by teachers, as well as philosophers and experts of pedagogy. The authors of this book advocate for an embodied pedagogy which not only gives students access to content but also to ways of thinking and acting in all conscience. A pedagogy of the Anthropocene epoch therefore encourages the mobilization of reason, emotions and senses as well as systemic reflection in the questioning of our lifestyles and the development of transversal skills. Based on internationally recognized research and practical experiences of institutions and teachers all over the western world, this book gathers the knowledge and experience of professors and researchers, coming from a wide variety of disciplines and cultural context. Their reflections have led them to develop a “head-heart-body approach” and a “6 Gates questioning method” to remodel pedagogy. This book is of interest to those working in the education sector. The Collected Essays of Ralph Ellison (Modern Library Classics)

"Exhilarating." —The Washington Post "Wolfish starts with a single wolf and spirals through nuanced investigations of fear, gender, violence, and story. A GORGEOUS achievement." —Blair Braverman, author of Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube“This is one of those stories that begins with a female body. Hers was crumpled, roadside, in the ash-colored slush between asphalt and snowbank.”So begins Erica Berry’s kaleidoscopic exploration of wolves, both real and symbolic. At the center of this lyrical inquiry is the legendary OR-7, who roams away from his familial pack in northeastern Oregon. While charting OR-7’s record-breaking journey out of the Wallowa Mountains, Erica simultaneously details her own coming-of-age as she moves away from home and wrestles with inherited beliefs about fear, danger, femininity, and the body.As Erica chronicles her own migration—from crying wolf as a child on her grandfather’s sheep farm to accidentally eating mandrake in Sicily—she searches for new expressions for how to be a brave woman, human, and animal in our warming world. What do stories so long told about wolves tell us about our relationship to fear? How can our society peel back the layers of what scares us? By strategically unspooling the strands of our cultural constructions of predator and prey, and what it means to navigate a world in which we can be both, Erica bridges the gap between human fear and grief through the lens of a wrongfully misunderstood species.Wolfish is for anybody trying to navigate a world that is often scary. A powerful, timeless, and necessary book for our current and future generations.
