The Politics of Potential: Global Health and Gendered Futures in South Africa (Medical Anthropology)
Par Michelle Pentecost. 2024
The first one thousand days of human life, or the period between conception and age two, is one of the…
most pivotal periods of human development. Optimizing nutrition during this time not only prevents childhood malnutrition but also determines future health and potential. The Politics of Potential examines early life interventions in the first one thousand days of life in South Africa, drawing on fieldwork from international conferences, government offices, health-care facilities, and the everyday lives of fifteen women and their families in Cape Town. Michelle Pentecost explores various aspects of a politics of potential, a term that underlines the first one thousand days concept and its effects on clinical care and the lives of childbearing women in South Africa. Why was the First One Thousand Days project so readily adopted by South Africa and many other countries? Pentecost not only explores this question but also discusses the science of intergenerational transmissions of health, disease, and human capital and how this constitutes new forms of intergenerational responsibility. The women who are the target of first one thousdand days interventions are cast as both vulnerable and responsible for the health of future generations, such that, despite its history, intergenerational responsibility in South Africa remains entrenched in powerfully gendered and racialized ways.Strictly Observant: Amish and Ultra-Orthodox Jewish Women Negotiating Media
Par Rivka Neriya-Ben Shahar. 2024
The Amish and ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities have typically been associated with strict religious observance, a renunciation of worldly things, and…
an obedience of women to men. Women’s relationship to media in these communities, however, betrays a more nuanced picture of the boundaries at play and women’s roles in negotiating them. Strictly Observant presents a compelling ethnographic study of the complex dynamic between women in both the Pennsylvanian Old Order Amish and Israeli ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities and contemporary media technologies. These women regularly establish valuable social, cultural, and religious capital through the countless decisions for use and nonuse of media that they make in their daily lives, and in ways that challenge the gender hierarchies of each community. By exhibiting a deep awareness of how media can be managed to increase their social and religious reputations, these women prompt us to reconsider our outmoded understanding of the Amish and ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities, the role that women play in these communities as agents of change, and our own relationship to media today.Digestive System (A True Book (Relaunch))

engaging in a more dynamic process of learning. This Learning-by-Doing Approach can be traced back to Aristotle, who wrote in his Nicomachean Ethics that “For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them”. The theory is illustrated through many relevant examples, followed by a large number of exercises whose requirements are rendered by action verbs: find, show, verify, check and construct. Readers are compelled to analyze and organize analytical skills. Rather than placing the exercises in bulk at the end of each chapter, sets of practice questions after each theoretical concept are included. The reader has the possibility to check their understanding, work on the new topics and gain confidence during the learning activity. As the theory unfolds, the exercises become more complex – sometimes they span over several topics. Hints have been added in order to guide the reader in the process. This book stems from the Differential Calculus course which the author taught for many years. The goal of this book is to immerse the reader in the subtleties of Differential Calculus through an active perspective. Particular attention was paid to continuity and differentiability topics, presented in a new course of action.A Learning Community of Reflective Teachers: From Whispers to Resonance
Par Neeraja Raghavan. 2024
Teachers possess a wealth of untapped wisdom and valuable experience. Whether it’s in matter of educational policy, curriculum development or…
textbook selection, teachers carry a trove of information and insights to share. Traditionally, teacher development has been driven by administrators of schools, and it often takes the form of a ‘mentor’ teaching the staff of a school. But what happens when teachers across different locations collaborate and learn together? This volume documents such an initiative, sparked off by the Covid-19 pandemic, which brought people together online. It underscores the power of teachers debating, discussing, and learning from each other. Based on an Indian experience, the book addresses a range of issues teachers and educators face across the world — encompassing pedagogy, classroom management, school culture and teacher development. A unique story of community building and teacher education, this book also contains key outcomes and insights which take us through their action research projects and showcases a model of teacher development that can be adopted by interested readers. Above all, it brings out the crying need for a teacher’s voice to be heard — for far too long, teachers have been mere implementers of decisions taken by policy makers or managements of schools. By means of networking communities such as the one described in this book, the transformation of teachers going from whispers to resonance is greatly amplified. An important intervention in the domain of teacher development, this volume will be of great interest to students, researchers and practitioners of education, teacher education, and sociology of education. It will also be useful for teacher trainees, academicians, teacher educators, policymakers, schoolteachers, curriculum developers, teacher training institutes, and universities offering teacher education programs. Now with a new, easy-to-read page design, Kaplan's Nursing School Entrance Exams Prep is a focused review of the HESI…

Par Agnès De Féo. 2020
This original new work is the fascinating result of sociologist and documentary filmmaker Agnès De Féo’s ten-year exploration of the…
phenomenon of niqab wearing. It is at once a groundbreaking study and a series of compelling first-person accounts from French and Francophone women who wear or have worn the niqab in France’s Salafi communities. With the backdrop of the French government’s 2010 ban on full facial veiling in public spaces, which itself has shaped the phenomenon, De Féo draws on her subjects’ own words to show their agency, working against the clichés that often underlie public views of the niqab—that it is purely the result of masculine pressure, for example, or extreme religiosity or nationalism, or the submissive desire to disappear. Instead, she shows, the niqab is multivalent: women wear it for reasons that range from religious piety to the desire to rebel against mainstream society, family, or the rule of law. The reasons are complex, overdetermined, contradictory, or even inconsistent, but they are the women’s own. Despite being worn only by a small minority of Muslim women, the Islamic garment has nonetheless been a major source of intense political, religious, and cultural debate in France. Searching to understand, rather than speculate, De Féo chose to approach the people who wear the niqab, and to make them, rather the veil itself, the subject of her research. Her unprecedented study, based on more than 200 interviews, reveals the many factors—social, political, geopolitical, and psychological—underpinning a personal choice that is not always as religious as it seems. The book ends with sixteen captivating interviews giving voice to stories rarely heard. With finesse and discernment, the author debunks the myths surrounding the wearing of the niqab, and sheds light on a practice subject to misunderstanding and prejudice, offering the reader unique insight. Challenging our preconceived notions and stereotypes about women who wear any form of Islamic apparel, but particularly the niqab, The Niqab in France introduces a group of women each with her own life story, her own share of personal struggles, aspirations, and desires, and her own claim to a certain place in society. This work received support for excellence in publication and translation from Albertine Translation, a program created by Villa Albertine.Tempus: The World of Discussion and the World of Narration (Verbal Arts: Studies in Poetics)

and literary interpretation at the hip. Developing two controversial theses—that sentences are not truly meaningful in isolation from their contexts and that verb tenses are primarily indicators not of time but of the attitude of the speaker or writer—Tempus surveys a dazzling array of ancient and modern texts from famous authors as well as casual speakers of German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Latin, and English, with a final chapter extending the observations to Greek, Russian, and world languages.A classic in German and long available in many other languages, Tempus launched a new discipline, text linguistics, and established a unique career that was marked by precise observation, sensitive cultural outreach, and practical engagement with the situation of migrants. Weinrich’s robust and lucid close readings of famous and little-known authors from all the major languages of western Europe expand our literary horizons and challenge our linguistic understanding. The Sex You Want: A Shameless Journey to Deep Intimacy, Honest Pleasure, and a Life You Love
