North Country: A Personal Journey Through the Borderland
Par Howard Frank Mosher. 2014
&“A richly observant memoir of a coast-to-coast journey along the US-Canada border . . . An armchair traveler&’s delight&” (Kirkus Reviews). &“Part…
travelogue, part memoir, part meditation, part exploration,&” North Country is an account of a trip along the northern border of the United States in search of the country&’s last unspoiled frontiers (The Boston Sunday Globe). In this vast, sparsely settled territory, Howard Frank Mosher found both a harsh and beautiful landscape and some of the continent&’s most independent men and women. Here, he brings this remote area to vivid life in a book &“bright with anecdote and history and lore and most importantly with affection for his human subjects&” (Richard Ford, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Independence Day). &“A classic road book. You could, with confidence, place this book on the shelf next to such American classics as John Steinbeck&’s Travels with Charley and Jonathan Raban&’s Old Glory.&” —Detroit Free Press &“What Mosher&’s northern journey is really about is our society&’s loss of Eden, the garden we were promised when we came here. The garden we&’ve turned into pulp fiction and rocket ranges. The very fact that this brave book can stir up so many thoughts about the predicaments of civilization is surely an indication that it is well worth reading.&” —Ottawa CitizenAtlas of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism

Par Sanjay Bhadada, Liza Das, Rimesh Pal. 2023
Endocrinology is perhaps, the only branch of medicine where stimulation and suppression testing are required as the initial step for…
biochemical confirmation of the clinical condition as hormone secretion is pulsatile. One of the primary needs for an endocrinologist is a pocketbook that can serve as a guide for performing and interpreting these tests. Unfortunately, there is no single source of these protocols, procedures, and interpretation of these tests in the country or even in the Southeast Asia region. This protocol manual is designed to be a ‘ready reckoner’ for endocrinologists for performing these tests. Disorders of various endocrine glands, including pituitary, thyroid, pancreas, adrenal, gonads, and bone and mineral disorders, have been addressed. The book includes prerequisites and indications of a given test, principles of the testing, detailed procedure, and interpretation. Participant information and instruction sheets have been included, when applicable, to be given as a handout to patients prior to these tests. The manual contains algorithms (e.g., for approaching cases with hypoglycemia) and interpretation provided in a tabular format. It also lists troubleshooting measures for specific tests, when applicable. Further, clinical case scenarios substantiated by clinical and radiological images have been incorporated in the manual to highlight the procedure and interpretation of these tests in the management of challenging clinical cases. The manual is designed to be a comprehensive yet concise document covering all these aspects. Besides blood-based investigations, procedures which are undertaken in challenging endocrine scenarios, including inferior petrosal sinus sampling, and adrenal venous sampling have been elucidated in a crisp and practical manner.Inside the Red Mansion: On the Trail of China's Most Wanted Man

A rare inside look at the thrilling world of smokejumpers, the airborne firefighters who parachute into the most remote and…
rugged areas of the United States, confronting the growing threat of nature’s blazes.Forest and wildland fires are growing larger, more numerous, and deadlier every year — record drought conditions, decades of forestry mismanagement, and the increasing encroachment of residential housing into the wilderness have combined to create a powder keg that threatens millions of acres and thousands of lives every year. One select group of men and women are part of America's front-line defense: smokejumpers. The smokejumper program operates through both the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management. Though they are tremendously skilled and only highly experienced and able wildland firefighters are accepted into the training program, being a smokejumper remains an art that can only be learned on the job. Forest fires often behave in unpredictable ways: spreading almost instantaneously, shooting downhill behind a stiff tailwind, or even flowing like a liquid. In this extraordinarily rare memoir by an active-duty jumper, Jason Ramos takes readers into his exhilarating and dangerous world, explores smokejumping’s remarkable history, and explains why their services are more essential than ever before. The Best American Food Writing 2019 (The Best American Series)

confining herself to a hospital bed for what could be her last stay, Miss Norma—newly widowed after nearly seven decades of marriage—rose to her full height of five feet and told the doctor, “I’m ninety years old. I’m hitting the road.” And so Miss Norma took off on an unforgettable around-the-country journey in a thirty-six-foot motor home with her retired son Tim, his wife Ramie, and their dog Ringo. As this once timid woman says “yes” to living in the face of death, she tries regional foods for the first time, reaches for the clouds in a hot air balloon, and mounts up for a horseback ride. With each passing mile (and one educational visit to a cannabis dispensary), Miss Norma’s health improves and conversations that had once been taboo begin to unfold. Norma, Tim, and Ramie bond in ways they had never done before, and their definitions of home, family, and friendship expand. Stop by stop, state by state, they meet countless people from all walks of life—strangers who become fast friends and welcome them with kindness and open hearts.Infused with this irrepressible nonagenarian’s wisdom, courage, and generous spirit, Driving Miss Norma is the charming, infectiously joyous chronicle of their experiences on the road. Par Paul Theroux. 1989
The acclaimed travel writer journeys by train across the Americas from Boston to Patagonia in this international bestselling travel memoir.Starting…
with a rush-hour subway ride to South Station in Boston to catch the Lake Shore Limited to Chicago, Paul Theroux takes a grand railway adventure first across the United States and then south through Mexico, Central America, and across the Andes until he winds up on the meandering Old Patagonian Express steam engine. His epic commute finally comes to a halt in a desolate land of cracked hills and thorn bushes that reaches toward Antarctica. Along the way, Theroux demonstrates how train travel can reveal &“"the social miseries and scenic splendors&” of a continent. And through his perceptive prose we learn that what matters most are the people he meets along the way, including the monologuing Mr. Thornberry in Costa Rica, the bogus priest of Cali, and the blind Jorge Luis Borges, who delights in having Theroux read Robert Louis Stevenson to him.Trekking Beyond: Walk the World's Epic Trails

Par Robert Michael Pyle. 2010
An account of a cross-country adventure chasing butterflies: “Armchair travelers who love a good yarn will find Pyle’s exuberance catching.”…
—Seattle TimesPart road-trip tale, part travelogue of lost and found landscapes, all good-natured natural history, Mariposa Road tracks Bob Pyle’s journey across the United States as he races against the calendar in his search for as many of the eight hundred American butterflies as he can find. Like Pyle’s classic Chasing Monarchs, Mariposa Road recounts his adventures, high and low, in tracking down butterflies in his own low-tech, individual way.Accompanied by Marsha, his cottonwood-limb butterfly net; Powdermilk, his 1982 Honda Civic with 345,000 miles on the odometer; and the small Leitz binoculars he has carried for more than thirty years, Bob ventured out in a series of remarkable trips from his Northwest home. From the California coastline in company with overwintering monarchs to the Far Northern tundra in pursuit of mysterious sulphurs and arctics; from the zebras and daggerwings of the Everglades to the leafwings, bluewings, and border rarities of the lower Rio Grande; from Graceland to ranchland and Kauai to Key West, these intimate encounters with the land, its people, and its fading fauna are wholly original. At turns whimsical, witty, informative, and inspirational, Mariposa Road is an extraordinary journey of discovery that leads the reader ever farther into butterfly country and deeper into the heart of the naturalist.“What Roger Tory Peterson was for birds, Bob Pyle is for butterflies . . . From the dusty heat of Texas and the tropical lushness of Hawaii to the legendary outhouse of the Midnight Sun in the Alaskan Arctic, Pyle is a traveling companion who never grows dull.” —Scott Weidensaul, author of Of a FeatherAtlas of Diabetes Mellitus
