Par Heather Montgomery. 2024
Child abuse casts a long shadow over the history of childhood. Across the centuries there are numerous accounts of children…
being beaten, neglected, sexually assaulted, or even killed by those closest to them. This book explores this darker side of childhood history, looking at what constituted cruelty towards children in the past and at the social responses towards it. Focusing primarily on England, it is a history of violence against children in their own homes, covering a large timeframe which extends from medieval times to the present. Undeniably, the experience of children in the past was often brutal, and children were treated with, what seems to contemporary mores, callousness, and cruelty. However, historians have paid far less attention to how the mistreatment of children was understood within its contemporary context. Most parents, both now and in the past, loved their children and there have always been widely shared understandings of the boundaries that separate the acceptable treatment of children from the intolerable and morally wrong. This book will examine how these boundaries have changed and been contested over time and, in doing so, provides a context to the many forms of violence experienced by children in the past. The Irreducibility of the Human Person: A Catholic Synthesis
Par Mark K. Spencer. 2022
Catholic philosophical anthropologists have defended views of the human person on which we are irreducible to anything non-personal. For example,…
it is not the case that we are nothing but matter, souls, or parts of society. But many Catholic anthropologies have overlooked ways in which we are irreducible and so have not given an adequate account of the uniqueness of each human person. This book presents a philosophical portrait of human persons that depicts each way in which we are irreducible, with the goal of guiding the reader to perceive, wonder at, and love all the unique features of human persons. It builds this portrait by showing how claims from many strands of the Catholic tradition can be synthesized. These strands include Thomism, Scotism, phenomenology, personalism, nouvelle théologie, analytic philosophy, and Greek and Russian thought. The book focuses on how these traditions' claims are grounded in experience and on how they help us to perceive irreducible features of persons. While many metaphysical claims about persons are defended, the picture of persons that ultimately emerges is one on which persons are best grasped not through abstract concepts but through aesthetic perception and love, as unique kinds of beauty. This book also explores irreducible features of our subjectivity, senses, intellect, freedom, and affections, and of our souls, bodies, and activities. It includes discussions of divine simplicity and causality, and of the nature of angels, matter, organisms, and artifacts, all of which must be understood to fully grasp our irreducibility. In showing how to synthesize various traditions' claims, the book also offers new solutions to a number of debates in Catholic philosophy. These include debates over natural law, the natural desire to see God, the separated soul, integralism and personalism, idealist and realist phenomenology, and scholastic accounts of the act of existence.Single-Case Research Designs: Methods for Clinical and Applied Settings

Par Courtney B. Vance, Dr Robin L. Smith. 2023
"A thoughtful, wise, empathetic book that has the capacity to save lives. " (Kirkus) "...an inspiring story of what [Black men]…
can achieve personally and professionally when they have the tools and support necessary to examine their pain and find their joy." (New York Journal of Books) A moving combination of memoir, psychology, and practical tools, this book offers Black men guidance and support for reclaiming mental well-being and finding whole, full-hearted living. Early in his career, actor Courtney B. Vance lost his father to suicide. Recently, he lost his godson to the same fate. Still, as mental health discourse hits the mainstream, it leaves the most vulnerable out of the conversation: Black men. In America, we teach that strength means holding back tears and shaming your own feelings. In the Black community, these pressures are especially poignant. Poor mental health outcomes-- including diagnoses of depression and anxiety, reliance on prescription drugs, and suicide-- have skyrocketed in the past decade. Institutionalized racism, microagressions, and stress caused by socioeconomic factors have led Black individuals to face worse mental health outcomes than any other demographic. In this book, Courtney B. Vance seeks to change this trajectory. Along with professional expertise from famed psychologist Dr. Robin L. Smith (popularly known as &“Dr. Robin&”), Courtney B. Vance explores issues of grief, relationships, identity, and race through the telling of his own most formative experiences. Together, Courtney and Dr. Robin provide a guide for Black men navigating life&’s ups and downs, reclaiming mental well-being, and examining broken pieces to find whole, full-hearted living. Self-care is an act of revolution. It&’s time to revolutionize mental health in the Black community.Walking to Jerusalem: Blisters, hope and other facts on the ground
Par Justin Butcher. 1993
2017 marked three important anniversaries for the Palestinian people: 100 years since the Balfour Declaration; 50 years since the Six-day…
War; and ten years since the Blockade of Gaza. As an act of penance, solidarity and hope, actor and musician Justin Butcher - along with ten other companions for the full route, plus another hundred joining him for various stretches along the way - walked from London to Jerusalem. This book is the record of his journey: a combination of walking journal, travel writing and pilgrim stories. It's less of a travel guide to walking across Europe and more an exploration of the many strands radiating from the Holy Land and its narrative, weaving paths across place and history, through the lives of Justin's fellow-walkers - and, of course, his own life. Between the route itinerary and the themes of Balfour and Christian Zionism, Weizmann and cordite, colonialism, Jerusalem Syndrome and Desert spirituality, Justin charts a chronicle of serendipity: happenstances hilarious, infuriating and occasionally numinous - or, as pilgrims might say, encounters with the Divine.Taming the Beast Within: Shredding the Stereotypes of Personality Disorder

Par Martin H. Singer. 1982
In the past frustration with experimental reports had caused educators to dismiss the entire reading research enterprise. Originally published in…
1982, this book attempts to abstract those experimental results relevant to developing effective reading programs. The book concentrates on the more mechanical aspects of reading skill such as visual discrimination ability, visual and auditory memory, visual-to-phonetic translation skills, and attentional strategies. These skills it is argued, account for the major proportion of variance in reading ability. The research on both competent and incompetent reading indicates the special importance of such skills to reading. The book contains three sections. Section I reviews the experimental evidence on competent reading. The review highlights consistent threads of evidence and provides a description of the competent reader’s strategies for analyzing text. Section II reviews research on poor reading. This section evaluates the concept of dyslexia and stresses that reading problems are not uniform. Section III maintains that the information about competent reading strategies and the impediments to acquiring those strategies should guide educators in evaluating instructional materials and facilitate the diagnosis of reading failure. Today it can be read in its historical context. The Misfortunes of Arthur: A Critical, Old-Spelling Edition (Routledge Revivals)
Par Thomas Hughes. 1992
The Misfortunes of Arthur, written by Thomas Hughes is one of the earliest printed plays from the English Renaissance and,…
as such, deserves its place of interest in dramaturgical studies for its historical significance. It offers a detailed literary evocation of Elizabethan anti-imperial thinking and a genuine desire to debate controversial questions. The play takes a sceptical view of Arthur and provides evidence of a political point of view that must have had a significant number of supporters in 1588 when it was performed for Elizabeth I on the eve of the Spanish Armada. It is also not difficult to find themes in The Misfortunes of Arthur which would find expression again in the later Renaissance drama. The fact that the play shares affinities with such diverse plays as Gorboduc and The Spanish Tragedy indicates that it holds a pivotal position in a time of theatrical flux. It provides a single, concise encapsulation of the Arthurian chronicle in a literary form, a drama, that students will find more engaging than chronicles or lengthy romances. This reissue of the 1992 Garland edition is of value to scholars because of the original spelling and source study contained within the work. It also contains helpful historical context in the introduction and a useful diagram of the Elizabethan stage which both students and scholars will find useful. This book analyses discourses of the use of motivation theories in schools globally. It focuses on the overall impact of…
motivation theories on teachers, students’ engagement, well-being, academic excellence, standards, equity and global competitiveness. It examines the role of motivation theories impacting on teachers and students in the classroom, and the overall impact of cognitive, social cognitive, affective and psycho-motor domains, used to motivate students to improve their performance in the classroom. The book analyses such topics as Behaviourism, a major motivation model to improve performance in schools, cognitive theories for creating engaging learning environments, including achievement motivation, Social cognitive theories for improving engagement and motivation, social constructivism to improve students’ motivation and academic achievement, humanistic approaches for creating effective motivational environments, the use of discourse analysis in understanding motivation, and dominant values used in motivation in inclusive schools. This book contributes in a very scholarly way, to a more holistic understanding of the nexus between globalisation, dominant models of motivation, and students’ engaging learning environments, and their academic achievement. This book highlights the importance of individual learner differences in learning English as a foreign language and reports the findings…
of a study which investigated the impact of two personality traits, which are, openness to experience and ambiguity tolerance, on target language attainment among Polish secondary school students. The book provides an exhaustive overview of the theoretical issues and existing research related to personality, emphasizing the two traits under investigation, openness, and ambiguity tolerance, which are the focus of the empirical study reported later in the book. The empirical investigation explored relationships between openness to experience and ambiguity tolerance, as well as their impact on attainment in learning English as a foreign language. Moreover, it also aimed to shed light on the link between these traits and students’ assessments (i.e., self-assessment and school grades). The findings of the study provide a basis for proposing specific profiles of foreign language learners with different levels of openness and ambiguity tolerance.Functional Assessment-Based Intervention: Effective Individualized Support for Students

Par Catrina Brown, Tod Augusta-Scott. 2007
"This volume is especially useful in demonstrating the effects of placing social discourses at the center of therapy. It gores…
many sacred cows of the larger modernist therapeutic community, but in doing so it offers new ideas for mental health professionals attempting to help their clients with common and serious life problems." —PSYCRITIQUES "This compilation is an insightful read for practitioners who have not taken the opportunity to use narrative therapy in practice...Experienced practitioners will certainly appreciate the theoretical analysis offered by the writers as well as the opportunity for reflective practice. Narrative Therapy is a meaningful contribution to a Canadian book market lacking in clinical literature for social workers" —CANADIAN ASSOCIATION OF SOCIAL WORKERS Narrative Therapy: Making Meaning, Making Lives offers a comprehensive introduction to and critique of narrative therapy and its theories. This edited volume introduces students to the history and theory of narrative therapy. Authors Catrina Brown and Tod Augusta-Scott situate this approach to theory and practice within the context of various feminist, post-modern and critical theories. Through the presentation of case studies, Narrative Therapy: Making Meaning, Making Lives shows how this narrative-oriented theory can be applied in the client-therapist experience. Many important therapeutic situations (abuse, addictions, eating disorders, and more) are addressed from the narrative perspective. Rooted in social constructionism, and emerging initially from family therapy, narrative therapy emphasizes the idea that we live storied lives. Within this approach, the editors and contributors seek to show how we make sense of our lives and experiences by ascribing meaning through stories which themselves arise within social conversations and culturally available discourses. Our stories don’t simply represent us or mirror lived events; they actually constitute us—shaping our lives as well as our relationships. Narrative Therapy will be a valuable supplemental textbook for theory and practice courses in departments of Counseling and Psychotherapy and of Social Work as well as for courses in Gender and Women Studies.
