Par Mookgo Solomon Kgatle. 2023
This book is an interdisciplinary study of the relationship between prophecy and politics in South African Pentecostalism. The role and…
the power of prophecy in enhancing the presence of politicians in the church square are unpacked through historical examples, as well as case studies of contemporary prophets. Solomon Kgatle argues that the influence of prophecy in politics has the potential to weaken the prophetic voice of the church in general and the Pentecostal movement in particular. He proposes a Pentecostal political theology of prophecy. This theology is developed by taking into cognizance the theoretical and theological frameworks of prophetic imagination and pneumatological imagination. In addition, this theology seeks a balance between prophecy and power and prophecy and sovereignty. This book explores the early evangelical quest for enlightenment by the Spirit and the Word. While the pursuit originated in…
the Protestant Reformation, it assumed new forms in the long eighteenth-century context of the early Enlightenment and transatlantic awakened Protestant reform. This work illuminates these transformations by focusing on the dynamic intersection of experimental philosophy and experimental religion in the biblical practices of early America’s most influential Protestant theologians, Cotton Mather (1663-1728) and Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758). As the first book-length project to treat Mather and Edwards together, this study makes an important contribution to the extensive scholarship on these figures, opening new perspectives on the continuities and complexities of colonial New England religion. It also provides new insights and interpretive interventions concerning the history of the Bible, early modern intellectual history, and evangelicalism’s complex relationship to the Enlightenment. The information infrastructure – comprising computers, embedded devices, networks and software systems – is vital to operations in every sector:…

Par Paula Montero, Camila Nicácio, Henrique Fernandes Antunes. 2023
This book represents a unique contribution to understanding the interactions between law and religion in contemporary Brazil. It analyzes how…
the regulation of religions according to the classical notion of secularism has become a source of tensions since the 1990s. Against this background, the respective chapters demonstrate, on the basis of various case studies, how the constitutional principle of pluralism, introduced by the 1988 federal constitution after a military dictatorship, has been addressed by new political actors, such as religious leaders, parliamentarians, influencers, state representatives, and activists. In particular, the chapters demonstrate how the mobilization of legal language, notably the language of human rights, has become fundamental to developing and consolidating new political agendas concerning secularism, tolerance, freedom of expression, gender and sexuality, family, and cultural heritage. In the authors’ approach, human rights assume a central role in social disputes as a language in which actors constitute themselves as rights subjects, form activist networks, and pursue their goals by expressing themselves in public. Given its focus and scope, the book will be of interest to all scholars seeking to understand the relationships between diversity and the regulation of religious practices in plural societies, where the classical notion of secularism continues to show its limitations.Steuerrecht: Grundlagen und Anwendungsfälle aus der Wirtschaft (FOM-Edition)

Par Jane Tomaine. 2005
When St. Benedict formed his first small community of monks at Monte Cassino on the hilltop, Italy--and much of Europe--was…
ravaged by war. The Roman Empire was breaking apart, and politics, cultural life, and even the Church, were all in disarray. In the midst of these tumultuous times, Benedict offered his followers a “little rule,” a guide about the size of a checkbook, that showed his monks the way to peace as they learned to prefer Christ above all things. Though it was written nearly 1500 years ago, the Rule of Benedict still offers the practical tools for living a Christ-centered today. Here in St. Benedict’s Toolbox, readers will find a primer on how to use these tools in their own tumultuous lives. Each chapter examines one aspect of the Rule, from ways of praying to ways of embracing humility, and offers suggestions for prayer, reflection, journaling, and action. As they learn to use Benedict’s tools, readers will discover the power--and the timeliness--of this ancient way of life. The Christian Universe
Par E. L. Mascall, Eric Mascall. 1966
The Christian Universe is an unabashed defense of Christianity against the unbelief and indifference of our age: all who would…
deny human freedom and responsibility; all who would maintain that life and existence are meaningless; and all who (under whatever banner) would persuade us that the secular is all in all, or that nothing beyond our own immediate empirical world can be known. Under Mascall’s lens, those who hold such positions are seen as offering a dreary and impoverished universe, “quite incapable of satisfying our needs and aspirations.” In contrast, he upholds “the wonder and glory of Christianity,” its unique revelation and reconciliation with God as the heart of the cosmic process, and its faith not a defiance or negation of the world, but an affirmation that there is meaning to the world. The Triune Identity: God According to the Gospel
Par Robert W. Jenson. 2002
This book presents a bold venture in theology, combining a presentation, explanation, analysis, and reinterpretation of trinitarian language. Rejecting the…
assumption that traditional trinitarian discourse is useless in an age of cults and sects, Jenson points to a profound and provocative renewal of trinitarian piety and reflection understood as a remedy for spiritual desolation and powerlessness. Proceeding on the premise that any radical analysis of the formula "Father, Son, and Holy Spirit" must work from biblical statements, Jenson investigates the significance of two biblical identifications of God: "God is whoever freed us from Egypt" and "God is whoever raised Jesus from the dead." In opposition to the notion that God is to be understood simply as timeless being, Jenson shows how the memory of God's acts and the presence of God in Christ leads to a hope for the future based on the promise of the Spirit.Taking Down Trump: 12 Rules for Prosecuting Donald Trump by Someone Who Did It Successfully
Par Tristan Snell. 2023
"An indispensable must-read. This is THE book to read to understand what&’s going on in the cases against Trump.&” —…
Joy Reid, MSNBC News anchor and host of The ReidOut A former prosecutor provides an essential guide to ensuring that Donald Trump, and other oligarchs of his ilk, no longer beat the rap, and face serious jail time for their crimes . . . For a half century Donald Trump has evaded justice. Now he finally faces trials for his lies, cons, and misdeeds—but many fear Trump will never face any real consequences. Is our system so broken that some people are now above the law? In Taking Down Trump, Tristan Snell—a former assistant attorney general for New York State who took on and beat Trump in a court of law—argues that Donald Trump can indeed be defeated, and shares his secrets for how to beat him. Snell led New York State&’s prosecution of Donald Trump for defrauding hundreds of Trump University students, resulting in Trump having to shell out $25 million to his victims —Trump&’s first and only major legal loss to date. Snell lays out 12 key rules for how to beat Trump—including:How voters and activists hold prosecutors accountableHow to stand up to Trump&’s public bullyingHow to persevere against all the stonewalling and counterattacksHow to get key figures to cooperate and cough up critical evidence Along the way, Snell discusses his own experience prosecuting Trump, and observes how prosecutors in the various cases against Trump are exploiting such rules—or not—as well as how Trump&’s revolving team of lawyers can be expected to behave, or, more accurately, perform. Whether you&’re a concerned citizen, a lawyer or prosecutor, or an activist or advocate, Snell shows how America&’s systems can still work to bring even the richest and most powerful to justice, and why those systems are worth preserving and improving. Ultimately, this is a road map for how America can begin to escape the Trump wilderness of fraud and fascism.Transformations of European Welfare States and Social Rights: Regulation, Professionals, and Citizens (Palgrave Socio-Legal Studies)

Par Jonathan M. Metzl. 2024
A searing reflection on the broken promise of safety in America. When a naked, mentally ill white man with an…
AR-15 killed four young adults of color at a Waffle House, Nashville-based physician and gun policy scholar Dr. Jonathan M. Metzl once again advocated for commonsense gun reform. But as he peeled back evidence surrounding the racially charged mass shooting, a shocking question emerged: Did the public health approach he had championed for years have it all wrong? Long at the forefront of a movement advocating for gun reform as a matter of public health, Metzl has been on constant media call in the aftermath of fatal shootings. But the 2018 Nashville killings led him on a path toward recognizing the limitations of biomedical frameworks for fully diagnosing or treating the impassioned complexities of American gun politics. As he came to understand it, public health is a harder sell in a nation that fundamentally disagrees about what it means to be safe, healthy, or free. In What We’ve Become, Metzl reckons both with the long history of distrust of public health and the larger forces—social, ideological, historical, racial, and political—that allow mass shootings to occur on a near daily basis in America. Looking closely at the cycle in which mass shootings lead to shock, horror, calls for action, and, ultimately, political gridlock, he explores what happens to the soul of a nation—and the meanings of safety and community—when we normalize violence as an acceptable trade-off for freedom. Mass shootings and our inability to stop them have become more than horrific crimes: they are an American national autobiography. This brilliant, piercing analysis points to mass shootings as a symptom of our most unresolved national conflicts. What We’ve Become ultimately sets us on the path of alliance forging, racial reckoning, and political power brokering we must take to put things right.Runes for the Green Witch: An Herbal Grimoire
Par Nicolette Miele. 2024
A magickal guide to working with runes and plant allies for manifestation, healing, and spellwork• Examines the herb and plant…
connections of each of the 24 runes of the Elder Futhark as well as correspondences with deities, astrology, tarot, and crystals • Provide examples and tips on how runes and plants may be combined within spells and ritual for manifesting, protecting, healing, banishing, and more • Explains how runes and plants can be worked with for the soulful process of rewilding and connecting with Mother Nature Runes and plants both contain the dynamic and raw energies of Mother Earth and can be used to heal, manifest, protect, and elevate magick. Both support and deepen the nature-human connection that is vital to mind, body, and spirit. And while both can provide us with many benefits on their own, when merged in magickal union, their combined powers are multiplied exponentially. In this magickal grimoire, herbalist witch Nicolette Miele immerses readers in the wisdom and folklore of the 24 Elder Futhark runes as well as their correspondences with deities, astrology, tarot, crystals, and plants. Each chapter begins by discussing the etymology, meanings, mythology, divination, correspondences, and magick of a particular rune and culminates with profiles of several herbs and plants that possess similar magickal energies. Each plant profile delves into the magickal, metaphysical, traditional, and medicinal applications as well as how to work with these incredible plant allies. These profiles also provide examples and tips on how the runes and plants may be combined within spells and ritual for manifesting, protecting, healing, banishing, and more. For example, the author connects Fehu, the rune of wealth and value, with the practice of altar-building, making offerings, and with alfalfa, cedar, dandelion, and other plants traditionally used in abundance and prosperity magick. In the chapter on Kenaz, the rune of heat and illumination, the nature connection is nurtured through the element of fire and a step-by-step bindrune candle ritual. The plants connected with Kenaz are those that embody the characteristics of fire—such as passion, ferocity, and sexuality—and include clove, damiana, and kava kava. Guiding the green witch through the benefits and strengths of synergistic magick, this book helps eclectic magickal practitioners advance their craft through folk magick and medicine, rituals, meditations, spells, and the soulful process of rewilding and connecting with Mother Nature.Legal Phantoms: Executive Action and the Haunting Failures of Immigration Law
Par Susan Bibler Coutin, Jennifer M. Chacón, Stephen Lee. 2024
The 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was supposed to be a stepping stone, a policy innovation announced…
by the White House designed to put pressure on Congress for a broader, lasting set of legislative changes. Those changes never materialized, and the people who hoped to benefit from them have been forced to navigate a tense and contradictory policy landscape ever since, haunted by these unfulfilled promises. Legal Phantoms tells their story. After Congress failed to pass a comprehensive immigration bill in 2013, President Obama pivoted in 2014 to supplementing DACA with a deferred action program (known as DAPA) for the parents of citizens and lawful permanent residents and a DACA expansion (DACA+) in 2014. But challenges from Republican-led states prevented even these programs from going into effect. Interviews with would-be applicants, immigrant-rights advocates, and government officials reveal how such failed immigration-reform efforts continue to affect not only those who had hoped to benefit, but their families, communities, and the country in which they have made an uneasy home. Out of the ashes of these lost dreams, though, people find their own paths forward through uncharted legal territory with creativity and resistance.Praying Through Infertility: A 90-Day Devotional for Men and Women

Par Aaron M. Renn. 2024
Learning how to live in today's new social and cultural environment will require examination, trial and error, and adaptation over…
time. But there are ways to live with integrity and follow Christ today, even in a negative world. From a peak in church attendance in the mid-20th century, Christianity has been on a trajectory of decline in the United States. Once positive toward Christianity and Christian moral teachings, cultural shifts toward the mid-90s led many to adopt a more neutral tone toward the Christian faith, seeing it as one option among many in a pluralistic public square. Today, however, Christianity is viewed negatively, and being known as a Christian often means a lower social status in elite society. Christian morality is openly repudiated and viewed as a threat to the new moral order. In Life in the Negative World, author Aaron M. Renn looks at the lessons from Christian cultural engagement over the past 70 years and suggests specific strategies for churches, institutions, and individuals to live faithfully in the "negative" world—a culture opposed to Christian values and teachings. And since there is no one-size-fits-all solution, living as a follower of Christ in the new, negative world and being missionally engaged will require a diversity of strategies. This book presents the case for legal protection for animals based on humanity’s shared interests and destinies with the animal…
kingdom. To underscore the urgent need for legal reform, the book documents how animals are in crisis, with separate discussions on animals in entertainment, research, fashion, the food industry, and animals in our homes, as well as issues that impact wildlife and aquatic animals. In each of the foregoing areas, there is a discussion of major developments for animals across the globe, the objective being to demonstrate how the U.S. is out of step with other major countries in its legal treatment of animals. The importance of media as a driver of change is also considered. This background culminates to the heart of the book, which discusses and analyzes the link between human rights and animal rights, with nine areas explored (e.g., loss of biodiversity; environmental destruction; zoonotic diseases; world hunger; violence). Challenges to legal reforms are also explored, including issues associated with weak laws, the failure to enforce existing laws, and governmental agencies that tend to overlook the actions of industries. Finally, the book explores the development of animal law and the trajectory of current laws, with analysis of developing ‘rights of nature’ laws and ‘legal personhood’ status for animals.A Student's Guide To The Federal Rules Of Civil Procedure, 2023-2024 (Selected Statutes Ser.)
Par Steven Baicker-McKee, William Janssen. 2023
What Makes A Student's Guide to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure Different? Text of the Rules, Title 28, and…
Constitution: The 2023-2024 edition supplies what your students need―the text of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (as amended through December 1, 2022), the frequently-consulted sections of the U.S. Judiciary Code (as amended through February 1, 2022), and the text of the U.S. Constitution. Most Rules Supplements available to students contain that same content. But where most supplements stop, A Student’s Guide continues on…. PLUS… Student-Friendly Orientation to Each Rule: What many students often find challenging in studying Civil Procedure―and what is less likely to be found in either a casebook or a conventional study aid―is an understanding of how each Rule "fits" into the master scheme of federal civil practice generally. A Student’s Guide offers students that very guidance. Three features follow the text of each Rule: "How This Rule Fits In" explains for students the broad context of each Rule and the role each plays in federal civil practice; "The Architecture of this Rule" guides students in unpacking the structure of those Rules that are especially long and confusing; “How This Rule Works in Practice” helps students understand each Rule’s application, subpart by subpart, in the real-world, practical life of practicing attorneys. PLUS… Citations to Interpretative Case Law: Also unlike most other Rules Supplements, A Student's Guide provides students with select, leading interpretative case law analyzing the Rules and their subparts (current through February 2023). This, then, converts this resource into a "finding aid” of sorts, as students work through applied problems in the context of the Rules. PLUS… A “Getting Started” Overview to Federal Practice Concepts: Because many of the related core concepts of federal practice are an amalgam of law found in Rules, statutes, constitutional provisions, and case law, A Student's Guide bridges that gulf with quick, orienting discussions of central practice concepts like personal jurisdiction, subject-matter jurisdiction, removal, venue, forum non conveniens, the Erie Doctrine, and claim and issue preclusion. These distillations allow students to acquire a broad view of those related practice contexts. PLUS… A Handy Overview of Federal Appellate Practice: A Student’s Guide also includes a concise, student-friendly overview of federal appellate practice. PLUS… A Helpful Orientation to the Rulemaking Process: A Student’s Guide also includes a brief orientation for students to the process of federal rulemaking, how the Rules originally came into existence, and how they are amended.
