Habakkuk and Zephaniah: Wrath and Mercy (International Theological Commentary (ITC))
Par Maria Eszenyei Szeles. 1987
Neither Habakkuk nor Zephaniah is very well known or understood by our generation. These Old Testament prophets, who were contemporary…
with Jeremiah, interpreted events leading up to the total destruction of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar, the Babylonian "king of kings and lord of lords," in 597 and 587 B.C. Writing from within a Socialist society, Mária Eszenyei Széles offers a unique perspective on Habakkuk and Zephaniah — a profoundly moving interpretation of the mystery of God's apparent absence or weakness when his own people meet with intolerable suffering at the hands of a cruel totalitarian regime.Proverbs and Ecclesiastes: Who Knows What Is Good? (International Theological Commentary (ITC))
Par Kathleen Farmer. 1991
The "wise" of ancient Israel were concerned primarily with the nature of goodness and the character of faith: What is…
"good" for humankind, and how should people live their brief lives on earth? Although the books of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes are generally regarded as two distinctly different types of works, Kathleen Farmer demonstrates that they belong together and should be read in light of each other as guides enabling and encouraging us to act in life-enhancing ways that are fully in accord with the teaching of the Lord.Judges: At Risk in the Promised Land (International Theological Commentary (ITC))
Par E. John Hamlin. 1990
This theological treatment of the Book of Judges is fresh, original, imaginative, scholarly, and relevant. In his commentary E. John…
Hamlin pays careful attention to the structure and meaning of the text of Judges, and he elucidates the "risk" that Israel faced in the Promised Land — the risk of living among the "Canaanites," of adopting their ungodly practices and their way of organizing society (the way of death). Hamlin's characterizations of the various liberator judges are particularly thought-provoking. Each chapter concludes with "Perspectives" on the text — reflections on the ancient context of the Judges accounts, insights from the Asian cultures among which Hamlin has lived and worked, and applications to modern situations. The Bible, Book by Book

claim to be the Messiah whose life in time and space can only be understood in the light of the eternal purposes of God. The author writes objectively from the evidence available but reminds us that the authors of the Gospels, which must be the principal sources of information, were writing from a theological point of view and had no intention of stating objective facts without any sort of interpretation. He believes that in studying the life of Christ we need a combination of faith and reason, and that two are not necessarily antagonistic. This book will be of interest to students of religion and history.5 Minutes with Jesus: Making Today Matter

Par Elie Wiesel. 1985
The Nobel winner’s classic look at Job and seven other Biblical characters as they grapple with their relationship with God…
and the question of His justice.“[Elie] Wiesel has never allowed himself to be diverted from the role of witness for the martyred Jews and survivors of the Holocaust, and by extension for all those who through the centuries have asked Job’s question: ‘What is God doing and where is His justice?’ Here in a masterful series of mythic portraits, drawing upon Bible tales and the Midrashim (a body of commentary), Wiesel explores ‘the distant and haunting figures that molded him’: Adam, Cain and Abel, Abraham and Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and Job. With the dramatic invention of a Father Mapple and the exquisite care of a Talmudic scholar, Wiesel interprets the wellsprings of Jewish religious tradition as the many faces of man’s greatness facing the inexplicable. In an intimate relationship with God it is possible to complain, to demand. Adam and Eve in sinning ‘cried out’ against the injustice of their entrapment; Cain assaulted God rather than his brother; and Abraham’s agreement to sacrifice his son placed the burden of guilt on Him who demanded it. As for Job, Wiesel concludes that he abdicated his defiance as did the confessing Communists of Stalin’s time to ‘underline the implausibility’ of his trial, and thus become the accuser. Wiesel’s concern with the imponderables of fate seems to move from strength to strength.” —Kirkus Reviews“The extraordinary thing that Elie Wiesel has done in this book is to take ancient tales and make them contemporary, in ways that are both dazzling and disturbing. Messengers of God is captivating.” —Robert McAfee Brown, author of Unexpected NewsPara quienes desean tomar los pasos en su fe cristiana y discipulado, para liberarse de las ataduras del pasado y…

Apocalypse against Empire: Theologies of Resistance in Early Judaism
Par Anathea E. Portier-Young. 2011
A fresh and daring take on ancient apocalyptic books. The year 167 b.c.e. marked the beginning of a period of…
intense persecution for the people of Judea, as Seleucid emperor Antiochus IV Epiphanes attempted — forcibly and brutally — to eradicate traditional Jewish religious practices. In Apocalypse against Empire Anathea Portier-Young reconstructs the historical events and key players in this traumatic episode in Jewish history and provides a sophisticated treatment of resistance in early Judaism. Building on a solid contextual foundation, Portier-Young argues that the first Jewish apocalypses emerged as a literature of resistance to Hellenistic imperial rule. She makes a sturdy case for this argument by examining three extant apocalypses, giving careful attention to the interplay between social theory, history, textual studies, and theological analysis. In particular, Portier-Young contends, the book of Daniel, the Apocalypse of Weeks, and the Book of Dreams were written to supply an oppressed people with a potent antidote to the destructive propaganda of the empire — renewing their faith in the God of the covenant and answering state terror with radical visions of hope..Zondervan Handbook of Biblical Archaeology: A Book by Book Guide to Archaeological Discoveries Related to the Bible

Rediscovering the Wisdom of the Corinthians: Paul, Stoicism, and Spiritual Hierarchy
Par Timothy A. Brookins. 2024
A bold new reading of 1 Corinthians in light of Greco-Roman philosophy The First Letter to the Corinthians begins…
with an admonishment of the church over their internal division and reliance on human wisdom. What exactly occasioned Paul&’s advice has perennially troubled New Testament scholars. Many scholars have asserted that Paul disapproved of the Corinthians&’ infatuation with rhetoric. Yet careful exegesis of the epistle problematizes this consensus. Timothy A. Brookins unsettles common assumptions about the Corinthian conflict in this innovative monograph. His close reading of 1 Corinthians 1–4 presents evidence that the Corinthian problem had roots in Stoicism. The wisdom Paul alludes to is not sophistry, but a Stoic-inspired understanding of natural hierarchy, in which the wise put themselves above believers they considered spiritually underdeveloped. Moreover, Paul&’s followers saw themselves as a philosophical school in rivalry with other Christians, engendering divisions in the church. Combining scriptural exegesis and investigation of Greco-Roman philosophical culture, Brookins reconstructs the social sphere of Corinth that Paul addresses in his letter. His masterful analysis provides much needed clarity on the context of a major epistle and on Pauline theology more broadly. No Address: An Interactive Study Guide

Par Amanda Jenkins, Dallas Jenkins, Dr Douglas S. Huffman. 2024
God&’s Goodness for the Chosen is an eight-lesson Bible study for individuals or groups that follows each episode of season…
4 of The Chosen. This study teaches readers how to reframe their hardships and see them as fertile soil for God&’s goodness to grow in their lives. We see it over and over again in the Bible: God brings good things out of bad things for the sake of His people and for His glory. But truth be told, when we personally experience suffering, we have a difficult time actually believing it. Yet, life is challenging even for the followers of Jesus, and hardship in the twenty-first century is no exception. God&’s Goodness for the Chosen takes readers through eight lessons which reveal how God uses suffering to bring about good things in the lives of those He loves. You&’ll see: • Death is eclipsed by life • Grief is eclipsed by praise • Questions are eclipsed by resolve • Confusion is eclipsed by grace • Temporary things are eclipsed by eternal things • Heartbreak is eclipsed by love • Sin is eclipsed by obedience • Pain is eclipsed by the fullness of God&’s plan Indeed, readers will be challenged to embrace the hard things of life, to experience more of the goodness God offers on the other side.NIV, Student Bible: Compact Edition
