-- 4e de couvEinstein in time and space: A life in 99 particles
Par Samuel Graydon. 2023
Walter Isaacson's Einstein meets Craig Brown's 99 Glimpses of Princess Margaret , in this innovative biography of the famous physicist…
told in ninety-nine dazzling vignettes. Most of us would agree that Albert Einstein's name is synonymous with "genius" and that his likeness is often used as a shorthand for all scientists, appearing everywhere from cartoons to textbooks. He has become more myth than man. That being the case, how best to capture his essence? In Einstein in Time and Space , talented young science journalist Samuel Graydon answers that question with an illuminating mosaic—99 intriguingly different particles that cumulatively reveal Einstein's contradictory and multitudinous nature. Glimpsed among these shards: a slacker who failed every subject but math, a job seeker who couldn't get hired, a lothario who courted many women, and a charmer who was the life of the party. As brilliant as he was inconsistent, Einstein was simultaneously an avid supporter of the NAACP and the fight for civil rights and someone capable of great prejudice. He was loved by many, known by few, and inspirational to a generation of young physicists. Graydon reveals every corner of Einstein's world: the false reporting that rocketed Einstein to fame nearly overnight, his effect on people he met merely in passing, even the remarkable posthumous journey of the famed physicist's brain. Entertaining, comforting, bolstering, and shocking, Einstein in Time and Space is the unique story of a man who redefined how we view our universe and our place within itSincère ou tricheuse?: roman (J'ai lu #3017. Par Cosimo Bambi, Jiachen Jiang. 2023
NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and ESA's XMM-Newton Observatory have been the pioneering satellites for studying the Universe with X-rays and…
the cornerstone of X-ray spectroscopy since their launches more than 20 years ago. The onboard gratings provide us a unique opportunity to distinguish individual spectral lines from different atoms thanks to their high energy resolutions. Enormous discoveries have been achieved by these two missions when observing a variety of X-ray-emitting astronomical objects, such as black holes, supernova remnants, clusters of galaxies, and stars. However, the data are limited to fairly bright X-ray sources. The recent JAXA's mission Hitomi opened a new window of high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy thanks to its onboard X-ray calorimeter. Although this mission was shortly terminated due to a mishap, Hitomi left behind a few sets of observations awaiting more data mining. The first half of this book introduces the history of high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy and different generations of X-ray spectrometers. A tutorial guide on how to reduce, analyze, and understand the astronomical data from Chandra, XMM-Newton, and Hitomi is also included. The second half of the book reviews past results obtained by the high-resolution spectrometers on these missions on multiple topics and discusses possible discoveries by upcoming missions in the next decade.Grace in All Simplicity: Beauty, Truth, and Wonders on the Path to the Higgs Boson and New Laws of Nature
Par Robert N. Cahn, Chris Quigg. 2023
An enthralling and accessible account of humanity&’s quest to make sense of our physical world, told through interwoven tales of…
inspiration, tragedy, and triumph. How do the remarkable recent discoveries of the Higgs boson, dark matter, and dark energy connect with the equally revolutionary discoveries in centuries past? In Grace in All Simplicity, readers will delight in Cahn and Quigg's engaging prose and see how the infinite and the infinitesimal are joined. Today, physicists and astronomers are exploring distances from a billionth of a billionth of the human scale to the entire cosmos, and contemplating time intervals that range from less than a trillionth of a trillionth of a second out to far longer than the age of the universe. Leaving home in this metaphorical way requires devising new instruments that spectacularly expand our senses and conceiving original ways of thinking that expand our minds. This is at once an act of audacity and an exercise in humility. Grace in All Simplicity narrates the saga of how we have prospected for some of Nature&’s most tightly held secrets, the basic constituents of matter and the fundamental forces that rule them. Our current understanding of the world (and universe) we inhabit is the result of curiosity, diligence, and daring, of abstraction and synthesis, and of an abiding faith in the value of exploration. In these pages we will meet scientists of both past and present. These men and women are professional scientists and amateurs, the eccentric and the conventional, performers and introverts. Scientists themselves, Cahn and Quigg convey their infectious joy as they search for new laws of nature. Join the adventure as scientists ascend mountain tops and descend into caverns deep underground, travel to the coldest places on Earth, and voyage back in time to near the birth of the Universe. Visit today&’s great laboratories and the astounding instruments they house. Grace in All Simplicity is a thrilling voyage filled with improbable discoveries and the extraordinary community of people who make them. Together, we will travel the path to the Higgs boson, weigh the evidence for subliminal dark matter, and learn what makes scientists invoke a mysterious agent named "dark energy." We will behold the emergence of a compelling picture of matter and forces, simple in its structure, graceful in the interplay of its parts, but still tantalizingly incomplete.Introduction to String Theory (Theoretical and Mathematical Physics)
Par Sergio Cecotti. 2023
Graduate students typically enter into courses on string theory having little to no familiarity with the mathematical background so crucial…
to the discipline. As such, this book, based on lecture notes, edited and expanded, from the graduate course taught by the author at SISSA and BIMSA, places particular emphasis on said mathematical background. The target audience for the book includes students of both theoretical physics and mathematics. This explains the book’s "strange" style: on the one hand, it is highly didactic and explicit, with a host of examples for the physicists, but, in addition, there are also almost 100 separate technical boxes, appendices, and starred sections, in which matters discussed in the main text are put into a broader mathematical perspective, while deeper and more rigorous points of view (particularly those from the modern era) are presented. The boxes also serve to further shore up the reader’s understanding of the underlying math. In writing this book, the author’s goal was not to achieve any sort of definitive conciseness, opting instead for clarity and "completeness". To this end, several arguments are presented more than once from different viewpoints and in varying contexts.Guide to Modern Physics: Using Mathematica for Calculations and Visualizations

This is a "how to guide" for making beginning calculations in modern physics. The academic level is second year college…
physical science and engineering students. The calculations are performed in Mathematica, and stress graphical visualization, units, and numerical answers. The techniques show the student how to learn the physics without being hung up on the math. There is a continuing movement to introduce more advanced computational methods into lower-level physics courses. Mathematica is a unique tool in that code is written as "human readable" much like one writes a traditional equation on the board. Key Features: Concise summary of the physics concepts. Over 300 worked examples in Mathematica. Tutorial to allow a beginner to produce fast results. The companion code for this book can be found here: https://physics.bu.edu/~rohlf/code.html James Rohlf is a Professor at Boston University. As a graduate student he worked on the first experiment to trigger on hadron jets with a calorimeter, Fermilab E260. His thesis (G. C. Fox, advisor, C. Barnes, R. P. Feynman, R. Gomez) used the model of Field and Feynman to compare observed jets from hadron collisions to that from electron-positron collisions and made detailed acceptance corrections to arrive at first the measurement of quark-quark scattering cross sections. His thesis is published in Nuclear Physics B171 (1980) 1. At the Cornell Electron Storage Rings, he worked on the discovery of the Upsilon (4S) resonance and using novel event shape variables developed by Stephen Wolfram and his thesis advisor, Geoffrey Fox. He performed particle identification of kaons and charmed mesons to establish the quark decay sequence, b –> c. At CERN, he worked on the discovery of the W and Z bosons and measurement of their properties. Presently, he is working on the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) which discovered the Higgs boson and is searching for new phenomena beyond the standard model.Decoding the Mechanisms of Antikythera Astronomical Device
Par Jian-Liang Lin, Hong-Sen Yan. 2016
This book presents a systematic design methodology for decoding the interior structure of the Antikythera mechanism, an astronomical device from…
ancient Greece. The historical background, surviving evidence and reconstructions of the mechanism are introduced, and the historical development of astronomical achievements and various astronomical instruments are investigated. Pursuing an approach based on the conceptual design of modern mechanisms and bearing in mind the standards of science and technology at the time, all feasible designs of the six lost/incomplete/unclear subsystems are synthesized as illustrated examples, and 48 feasible designs of the complete interior structure are presented. This approach provides not only a logical tool for applying modern mechanical engineering knowledge to the reconstruction of the Antikythera mechanism, but also an innovative research direction for identifying the original structures of the mechanism in the future. In short, the book offers valuable new insights for all readers who are interested in the Antikythera mechanism.Physics—Problems, Solutions, and Computer Calculations: Vol. 1 Mechanics, Properties of Matter, and Heat

Par Roberto Trotta. 2023
'A STUNNING AND UNFORGETTABLE VOYAGE THROUGH THE STARS' STEPHEN FRYA sweeping inquiry into how the night sky has shaped what…
it means to be human. One of our species' most enduring and universal relationships has been with the night sky itself - yet in the glow of today's artificial lighting, we have forgotten this intimacy with the cosmos. In Starborn, cosmologist Roberto Trotta reveals how stargazing has shaped the course of civilisation. Origin myths made the Sun into a life-giving creator and the Milky Way a gateway for departed souls. The motion of celestial bodies sustained the illusion that the Earth was at the centre of the cosmos - until looking at them more closely sparked the Scientific Revolution. Across the ages, the stars have served as clocks, maps, compasses, muses, and gods, defining our laws of reality and our dreams of the sublime. How radically different would we be if we looked to the night sky and saw . . . nothing? Trotta also offers a dramatic alternate history, imagining how a world without stars would change our understanding of science, art, and ourselves. Revealing the fundamental connections between astronomy and the story of civilisation, Starborn summons us to lose ourselves in the immeasurable vastness above - and will change how you think of the night sky forever.Electricity in the 17th and 18th Centuries: A Study of Early Modern Physics

Par Henryk Fukś. 2023
The main focus of the book is solvability of cellular automata, that is, expressing the state of a given cell…
after a given number of steps by an explicit formula. The author considers solutions of two types of initial value problems for cellular automata, the deterministic one and the probabilistic one. In the first chapter the basic concepts of cellular automata theory are introduced. Deterministic initial value problem is introduced next and solutions for selected simple rules are also presented. In the following chapters various techniques for solving the deterministic problem are introduced, using elementary CA rules of increasing complexity as examples. The second part of the book introduces the concept of probability measure in the context of cellular automata and the probabilistic initial value problem for both deterministic and probabilistic rules. The book is amply illustrated with examples and applications such as the density classification problem, phase transitions in traffic models or the diffusion of innovations model. In the appendix, solution formulae (both deterministic and probabilistic) for over 60 elementary cellular automata rules are listed. Ruelle-Frobenius-Perron equations for all 88 minimal elementary cellular automata are also provided.Advanced Multifunctional Materials from Fibrous Structures (Advanced Structured Materials #201)

This book highlights some aspects of processing, microstructure, and properties of materials in fibrous form, or from fibers, with wide…
applications for textile-oriented and technically oriented advanced products. Emphasis is placed on the physical and chemical nature of the processes, describing the behavior and properties of the investigated materials. The chapters describing the state and expected trends in selected areas summarize not only the published works but also the original results and the critical evaluation and generalization of basic knowledge. In addition to the preparation of materials with new effects, attention is focused on the development of new testing principles, the construction of special devices, and metrological aspects. Research activities cover all types of fibers with a clear shift toward synthetic and specialty fibers for non-clothing applications. This is in line with the current development trend in the field of high-performance fibers, mainly for use as reinforcement in various composite materials and functional fibers for smart textiles. The area of fibrous materials covered in this book is indeed very large. Compressing the basic available information in a reasonable space was therefore a difficult task. The goal in writing this book was to provide a broad area of different results so that the book is suitable for anyone who is generally interested in fibrous materials and their applications for various purposes.Proceedings of the 2022 Conference of The Computational Social Science Society of the Americas (Springer Proceedings in Complexity)

when global and local social, political, cultural, and economic affairs are engulfed in chaos, this book sheds light on the mechanisms of uncertainties, offering new visions and frameworks for analyzing the nonlinear interactions between individuals, societies, and the environment. From exploring the foundational elements that shape our understanding of humanity, such as worldviews, justice, and trust, to applying complexity theory in the realms of politics, economics, management, strategies, and wars, this monograph provides a comprehensive examination of its far-reaching implications. By examining historical bifurcations and structural changes in American history and China's modern development, it emphasizes how complexity theory can serve as a bridge for intellectual and cultural communication between Western (Newtonian) and East Asian (yin-yang-based) civilizations. Moreover, the book elucidates that nonlinear phenomena, including bifurcations, catastrophes, structural changes, emergence of structures, and chaos, are integral aspects of human evolution. It unveils the positive potential within chaos, demonstrating that a comprehensive understanding of catastrophic mechanisms enables humanity to prevent global disasters by leading systems to chaotic attractors without destructive consequences. Through an exploration of the intricate interdependencies among individuals, societies, and the environment, this book offers a unique and comprehensive introduction to the application of complexity theory to the realm of humanity.
