Pandexicon: How the Language of the Pandemic Defined Our New Cultural Reality
Par Wayne Grady. 2023
Did you keep a list of the words coined by Covid? Wayne Grady did! They're deftly woven into a journal/timeline,…
taking us through two years of surrealism and limbo.—Margaret AtwoodThis exploration of the many new terms of the Covid-19 pandemic provides insight into the ways an ever-evolving vocabulary helped us cope with our anxiety and adapt to a new reality When the pandemic struck in early 2020, Wayne Grady started collecting the words and phrases that arose from our shared global experience. Some, such as "uptick" and "pivot," had existed before but now took on new meaning, and others, such as "covidivorce," "quarantini," "covexit," and "shecession," appeared for the first time, their meaning instantly clear. Through this new vocabulary, we became more able to adapt to change, to domesticate it in a sense, and to reduce our fears. Moving from the very beginning of the pandemic (the "Before Times") and our early response to it through the peaks and troughs of the various waves in countries throughout the world, and ending with a contemplation of what the "After Times" might look like, this book takes us on a journey through the pandemic and illuminates both how this new language has unfolded and how it has changed the way we think about ourselves and each other.Once a Girl, Always a Boy: A Family Memoir of a Transgender Journey

Women's lives are shaped by sexism and expectations. Disabled people's lives are shaped by ableism and a complete lack of…
expectations. But what happens when you're subjected to both sets of rules? This powerful, honest, hilarious, and furious memoir from journalist and advocate Lucy Webster looks at life at the intersection; the struggles, the joys, and the unseen realities of being a disabled woman. From navigating the worlds of education and work, dating and friendship; to managing care; contemplating motherhood; and learning to accept your body against a pervasive narrative that it is somehow broken and in need of fixing, The View from Down Here shines a light on what it really means to move through the world as a disabled woman. © 2023 Lucy Webster © 2023 DK AudioA reporter's life

The highly sensitive child: Helping our children thrive when the world overwhelms them
Par Elaine Aron. 2023
A groundbreaking parenting guidebook addressing the trait of "high sensitivity" in children, from the psychologist and bestselling author of The…
Highly Sensitive Person whose books have sold more than 1 million copies With the publication of The Highly Sensitive Person , pioneering psychotherapist Dr. Elaine Aron became the first person to identify the inborn trait of "high sensitivity" and to show how it affects the lives of those who possess it. In The Highly Sensitive Child, Dr. Aron shifts her focus to the 15 to 20 percent of children who are born highly sensitive—deeply reflective, sensitive to the subtle, and easily overwhelmed. These qualities can make for smart, conscientious, creative children, but also may result in shyness, fussiness, or acting out. As Dr. Aron shows in The Highly Sensitive Child , if your child seems overly inhibited, particular, or you worry that they may have a neurodevelopmental disorder, such as ADHD or autism, they may simply be highly sensitive. And raised with proper understanding and care, highly sensitive children can grow up to be happy, healthy, well-adjusted adults. Rooted in Dr. Aron’s years of experience working with highly sensitive children and their families, as well as in her original research on child temperament, The Highly Sensitive Child explores the challenges of raising an HSC; the four keys to successfully parenting an HSC; how to help HSCs thrive in a not-so-sensitive world; and how to make school and friendships enjoyable. With chapters addressing the needs of specific age groups, from newborns to teens, The Highly Sensitive Child is the ultimate resource for parents, teachers, and the sensitive children in their lives. * This audiobook edition includes a downloadable PDF of questionnaires from the bookOut of silence: a journey into language
