The view from down here: Life as a young disabled woman
Par Lucy Webster. 2023
Women's lives are shaped by sexism and expectations. Disabled people's lives are shaped by ableism and a complete lack of…
expectations. But what happens when you're subjected to both sets of rules? This powerful, honest, hilarious, and furious memoir from journalist and advocate Lucy Webster looks at life at the intersection; the struggles, the joys, and the unseen realities of being a disabled woman. From navigating the worlds of education and work, dating and friendship; to managing care; contemplating motherhood; and learning to accept your body against a pervasive narrative that it is somehow broken and in need of fixing, The View from Down Here shines a light on what it really means to move through the world as a disabled woman. © 2023 Lucy Webster © 2023 DK AudioEinstein in time and space: A life in 99 particles

told in ninety-nine dazzling vignettes. Most of us would agree that Albert Einstein's name is synonymous with "genius" and that his likeness is often used as a shorthand for all scientists, appearing everywhere from cartoons to textbooks. He has become more myth than man. That being the case, how best to capture his essence? In Einstein in Time and Space , talented young science journalist Samuel Graydon answers that question with an illuminating mosaic—99 intriguingly different particles that cumulatively reveal Einstein's contradictory and multitudinous nature. Glimpsed among these shards: a slacker who failed every subject but math, a job seeker who couldn't get hired, a lothario who courted many women, and a charmer who was the life of the party. As brilliant as he was inconsistent, Einstein was simultaneously an avid supporter of the NAACP and the fight for civil rights and someone capable of great prejudice. He was loved by many, known by few, and inspirational to a generation of young physicists. Graydon reveals every corner of Einstein's world: the false reporting that rocketed Einstein to fame nearly overnight, his effect on people he met merely in passing, even the remarkable posthumous journey of the famed physicist's brain. Entertaining, comforting, bolstering, and shocking, Einstein in Time and Space is the unique story of a man who redefined how we view our universe and our place within itDare to dream: the Rose Resnick story

Par John Cotter. 2023
"I was in the car the first time music seemed strange: the instruments less distinct, the vocals less crisp." John…
Cotter was thirty years old when he first began to notice a ringing in his ears. Soon the ringing became a roar inside his head. Next came partial deafness, then dizziness and vertigo that rendered him unable to walk, work, sleep, or even communicate. At a stage of life when he expected to be emerging fully into adulthood, teaching, and writing books, he found himself "crippled and dependent" and in search of care. When he is first told that his debilitating condition is likely Ménière's Disease but that there is "no reliable test, no reliable treatment, and no consensus on its cause," Cotter quits teaching, stops writing, and commences upon a series of visits to doctors and treatment centers. What begins as an expedition across the country navigating and battling the limits of the American health-care system quickly becomes something else entirely: a journey through hopelessness and adaptation to disability. Along the way, hearing aids become inseparable from his sense of self, as does a growing understanding that the possibilities in his life are narrowing rather than expanding. And with this understanding of his own travails comes reflection on age-old questions around fate, coincidence, and making meaning of inexplicable misfortune. A devastating memoir that sheds urgent, bracingly honest light on both the taboos surrounding disability and the limits of medical science, Losing Music is refreshingly vulnerable and singularly illuminating?a story that will make listeners see their own lives anewRecollections, wrecks, and reflections: my journey from daylight through darkness and beyond

he could be whatever he wanted to be. He was told that he could become a distinguished doctor, an amazing athlete, a profound professor, a fantastic father, a limitless leader, a sensational success. "Just believe it and then you will see it," his encouragers cheered, "You can be whatever you want to be." But what happens when you literally can't See it? At the age of 9 years old, Andre was diagnosed as legally blind. After over a dozen surgeries to save his eyesight, his family and he had to face the inevitable. Andre was going blind. But the story does not stop there. Actually, that is precisely where this interesting and inspiring saga begins. Vision in The Dark is Dr. Andre Watson's story of becoming a Blind Visionary. He is blind, yet he decided to use his life to develop new ways of seeing himself, others, and the world. Andre braved and overcame countless odds. Today he is a licensed clinical psychologist, a world traveler, an award-winning athlete, and a beloved husband, father, and friend. He offers a challenging and awe-inspiring glimpse of life through the eyes of a blind man. With refreshing clarity, unmistakable charm and humor that will make you laugh out loud, Vision in The Dark redefines for us all what it really means to be able to see. 2016. Self. Between stories, inspiring reflections and revelations, we are immersed in a sea of possibilities for our evolution and freedom as people, as Souls. This interesting and unique compilation of ideas, narratives and affirmations takes us down shadowy paths, where we are encouraged to confront the learned and the intuitive, to visit ourselves without being sly. Luis Felipe, anxious to "see" new seeds germinate on the fertile surface of the conscience of all those who are not afraid to evolve, offers us several paths. His firm, palpable push invites us to explore with curiosity an infinite and permanent reality. when global and local social, political, cultural, and economic affairs are engulfed in chaos, this book sheds light on the mechanisms of uncertainties, offering new visions and frameworks for analyzing the nonlinear interactions between individuals, societies, and the environment. From exploring the foundational elements that shape our understanding of humanity, such as worldviews, justice, and trust, to applying complexity theory in the realms of politics, economics, management, strategies, and wars, this monograph provides a comprehensive examination of its far-reaching implications. By examining historical bifurcations and structural changes in American history and China's modern development, it emphasizes how complexity theory can serve as a bridge for intellectual and cultural communication between Western (Newtonian) and East Asian (yin-yang-based) civilizations. Moreover, the book elucidates that nonlinear phenomena, including bifurcations, catastrophes, structural changes, emergence of structures, and chaos, are integral aspects of human evolution. It unveils the positive potential within chaos, demonstrating that a comprehensive understanding of catastrophic mechanisms enables humanity to prevent global disasters by leading systems to chaotic attractors without destructive consequences. Through an exploration of the intricate interdependencies among individuals, societies, and the environment, this book offers a unique and comprehensive introduction to the application of complexity theory to the realm of humanity.Relativistic Quantum Invariance (Lecture Notes in Physics #1012)

dynamics and the light-front dynamics. While the light-front dynamics (LFD) based on the light-front time was proposed by Dirac in 1949, there has not yet been a salient review on the connection between the LFD and the instant form dynamics (IFD) based on the ordinary time. By reviewing the connection between LFD and IFD using the idea of interpolating the two different forms of the relativistic dynamics, one can learn the distinguished features of each form and how one may utilize those distinguished features in solving the complicated relativistic quantum field theoretic problems more effectively. With the ongoing 12-GeV Jefferson Lab experiments, the internal structures of the nucleon and nuclei are vigorously investigated in particular using the physical observables defined in the LFD rather than in the IFD. This book offers a clear demonstration on why and how the LFD is more advantageous than the IFD for the study of hadron physics, illustrating the differences and similarities between these two distinguished forms of the dynamics. It aims at presenting the basic first-hand knowledge of the relativistic quantum field theories, describing why and how the different forms of dynamics (e.g., IFD and LFD) can emerge in them, connecting the IFD and the LFD using the idea of the interpolation, and demonstrating explicit examples of the interpolation in quantum electrodynamics and other field theories. While the level of presentation is planned mainly for the advanced undergraduate students and the beginning graduate students, the topics of the interpolation between the IFD and the LFD are innovative enough for even the experts in the field to appreciate its usefulness.Einstein in Time and Space: A Life in 99 Particles
