Par Elizabeth Thomas. 1993
&“A fascinating glimpse into the canine world, possibly deeper and more accurate than any we have had until now&” (The…
New York Times Book Review). Long before the Dog Whisperer, anthropologist Elizabeth Marshall Thomas revealed to readers the nature of pack dynamics, leading to a completely new understanding of dogs, their personalities, and their desires. Based on thirty years of living with and observing dogs, The Hidden Life of Dogs asks one question: What do dogs want? To find out, we must meet the pack. First there is Misha, a husky Thomas followed on her daily rounds of more than 130 square miles. Then there is Maria, who adored Misha, bore his puppies, and clearly mourned when he moved away; the brave pug Bingo and his little wife, Violet; the dingo Viva; and other colorful characters. In observing them, Thomas learned that what dogs want most of all is other dogs. Informative and captivating, The Hidden Life of Dogs will give every canine owner and canine lover great insight into dog behavior. &“A wonderful book . . . Too bad dogs can&’t read. Par Mark Hauber. 2023
An hourly guide that follows twenty-four birds as they find food, mates, and safety from predators. From morning to…
night and from the Antarctic to the equator, birds have busy days. In this short book, ornithologist Mark E. Hauber shows readers exactly how birds spend their time. Each chapter covers a single bird during a single hour, highlighting twenty-four different bird species from around the globe, from the tropics through the temperate zones to the polar regions. We encounter owls and nightjars hunting at night and kiwis and petrels finding their way in the dark. As the sun rises, we witness the beautiful songs of the “dawn chorus.” At eleven o’clock in the morning, we float alongside a common pochard, a duck resting with one eye open to avoid predators. At eight that evening, we spot a hawk swallowing bats whole, gorging on up to fifteen in rapid succession before retreating into the darkness. For each chapter, award-winning artist Tony Angell has depicted these scenes with his signature pen and ink illustrations, which grow increasingly light and then dark as our bird day passes. Working closely together to narrate and illustrate these unique moments in time, Hauber and Angell have created an engaging read that is a perfect way to spend an hour or two—and a true gift for readers, amateur scientists, and birdwatchers.Kitty Language: An Illustrated Guide to Understanding Your Cat

Par Nilanjana Das Chatterjee, Mrinmay Mandal. 2023
This book presents research on landscape ecology and the relationship between humans and wildlife. It helps readers understand how ecological…
patterns and processes are interconnected. This research illustrates and proposes (practicable) management strategies toward long-term ecological restoration and mitigation of consequences of conflict. Increasing wildlife activities in localities and forest fringes are an alarming issue. Ecological processes like movement, colonization, extinction and conflict issues depend on the landscape and ecological activities, the movement for example of migratory elephants and their colonization not only affects society but the wildlife and biodiversity too. Strategic management measures can contribute to enriching the biodiversity, habitat quality as well as landscape, while minimizing human-wildlife conflicts. This book describes landscape ecological patterns and processes, habitat dominancy, habitat dependency, suitability, connectivity and corridor selection. To synthesize these patterns and processes, several ecological indices are used. Use of geo-spatial techniques improves future management strategies for similar circumstances, especially, related to forest regeneration and forest restoration. This book provides a concise overview to a wide range of readers including postgraduate students, researcher, academics, landscape planners, decision makers and even local populations. The techniques and management strategies described should help planners to improve forest management, by implementing quality enhancement programs such as plantation area selection and corridor selection.Comparative Physiology and Evolution of the Autonomic Nervous System

Par Barry Kipperman. 2024
Decision-Making in Veterinary Practice The first-ever guide to rational decision-making in veterinary practice The practice of veterinary medicine entails crucial…
decisions about patient care on a daily basis. Whether to admit patients displaying symptoms, whether to pursue diagnoses or prioritize therapeutic trials, whether to advise overnight stays after routine surgery, whether to refer patients; the answers to questions like these can significantly influence patient outcomes and standards of care. However, veterinary clinicians are seldom trained to analyze their patterns of decision-making, relying instead on the existing culture of a practice to dictate their behaviors. This can lead to irrational decisions, institutional inertia, reluctance to comply with evidence-based medicine, and failure to optimize patient outcomes. Decision-Making in Veterinary Practice provides the first-ever dedicated guide to rational principles for decision-making in veterinary practice. Rooted in the study of normative ethics, it seeks to pose important questions and develop processes by which they can be answered. The book promises to transform the clinical performance of clinicians and practices that utilize it. Decision-Making in Veterinary Practice readers will also find: Discussions of key issues based on extensive clinical experience and evidence Detailed discussion of important decision determinants like time of day, patient weight, criteria for stopping treatment, and more Essential insights on clinical decision-making and clinical reasoning Decision-Making in Veterinary Practice is ideal for all veterinary practitioners, veterinary students, and clinical skills instructors. Our tendency to read French Enlightenment political writing from a narrow disciplinary perspective has obscured the hybrid character of political…
philosophy, rhetoric, and natural science in the period. As Michèle Duchet and others have shown, French Enlightenment thinkers developed a philosophical anthropology to support new political norms and models. This book explores how five important eighteenth-century French political authors—Rousseau, Diderot, La Mettrie, Quesnay, and Rétif de La Bretonne—also constructed a "political zoology" in their philosophical and literary writings informed by animal references drawn from Enlightenment natural history, science, and physiology. Drawing on theoretical work by Derrida, Latour, de Fontenay, and others, it shows how these five authors signed on to the old rhetorical tradition of animal comparisons in political philosophy, which they renewed via the findings and speculations of contemporary science. Engaging with recent scholarship on Enlightenment political thought, it also explores the links between their political zoologies and their family resemblance as "liberal" political thinkers. How to Train Your Dog: Transform Your Dog’s Behaviour and Strengthen Your Bond Forever

sanctuary (Jane Goodall). What the Animals Taught Me is a collection of stories about rescued farm animals in a shelter in Sonoma County, California, and what these animals can teach us. Each story illuminates how animals can help us see and embrace others as they truly are and reconnect us with the natural world.Wishing to escape the urban rat race, freelance writer and editor Stephanie Marohn moved to rural northern California in 1993. Life was sweet. She was a busy freelancer. In return for reduced rent, she fed and cared for two horses and a donkey. Her life was full. And then, more farm animals started to appear: a miniature white horse, a donkey, sheep, chickens, followed by deer and other wildlife. Each one needed sanctuary either from abuse, physical injury, or neglect. Marohn took each animal in and gradually turned her ten-acre spread into an animal sanctuary. A deeply inspiring collection, What the Animals Taught Me awakens our hearts and reminds us that our best life teachers sometimes come covered in fur.“One of the best books I have ever read on the way animals open our hearts and teach us unforgettable lessons about life.” —Andrew Harvey, author of The Hope: A Guide to Sacred Activism and The Direct PathGuinea Pigs: Food, Symbol and Conflict of Knowledge in Ecuador
Par Eduardo Archetti. 1997
Guinea pigs have been reared and eaten by indigenous people in the Andes since ancient times, and it seemed rational…
to development planners to ‘modernize' their production. When these development projects ran into trouble, a team of anthropologists was invited to study the reasons for this lack of success. This intriguing book is the product of that study. What the author shows is that guinea pigs have a meaning in the social and ritual life of Ecuadorian peasants which is far from mundane. Rejecting the attempts of some anthropologists to reduce the production of guinea pigs and the festive life of the Andean community to a quest for protein, he explores the full complex of social and cultural practices which centre on this animal, and uses his study of its role within Andean culture to provide telling insights into how that culture itself is constituted -- its values, beliefs and attitudes. By working in a variety of communities with different ecological and ethnographic characteristics, the author has made a major contribution to ethnographic accounts of Ecuador and to the more general study of ritual, consumption and indigenous knowledge. He points us, in particular, towards the importance of the knowledge of women, who are those principally responsible for the care of an animal which is prized for its role in healing and central to Andean sociality. The book not only presents us with a colourful description of the range of cultural practices surrounding the guinea pig, ranging from the way the animals are reared, through a rich and complex cuisine, to their role in ritual life, but also highlights the way the gender dimension is central to understanding resistances to ‘modernization' and the power of ‘experts'.Animal Breeding
