The dancer's promise

force in American poetry. Not only a source of imagery, allusion, rhythm and style, the Bible is central to how poetry has both shaped and been shaped by American civic, political, and social history, including issues of ethnicity, race and gender. Through poetry core issues of the Bible in American culture emerge in a new light. What defines America as a nation? What are its historical, political and religious meanings and direction? Vitally, how is it that the Bible is at once a shared common text, binding community, and yet was throughout American culture also contested, disputed, and politicized as a weapon of war? This study begins with the Puritans, and goes on to examine poetry of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, as well as claims and counterclaims in abolition, slavery, and women’s rights. In doing so it treats both popular and major writers, including Edward Taylor, Frances Harper, Emerson, Whitman, Dickinson, Moore and Gwendoln Brooks, concluding with Amanda Gorman.Visiting the Fallen: Arras South

cemeteries.Arras, France, was a frontline town throughout the Great War. In 1916, it became home to the British Army and it remained so until the Advance to Victory. The area around Arras is as rich in Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries as anywhere on the Western Front, yet they remain largely unvisited. This book explores those cemeteries, and tells the story of the men who are buried there.Visiting the Front: Arras-South contains comprehensive coverage of over 60 Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries to be found in Arras and to the south of the town. It has a wealth of gallantry awards, including their citations, and features hundreds of officers and other ranks who fell during the war. Many small actions, raids and operations are described in a book that tells the story of warfare on the Western Front through the lives of those who fought and died on the battlefields of Arras. This is an essential reference guide for anyone visiting Arras and its battlefields.Hawker VC RFC ACE: The Life of Major Lanoe Hawker VC DSO, 1890–1916
Par Tyrrel M. Hawker. 2013
By the age of 25 Lanoe Hawker of the Royal Flying Corps had won the VC and DSO. He was…
the first pilot to record five 'kills' before being shot down and killed by Baron von Richthofen (The Red Baron).Lanoe's biography was written by his brother Tyrrel as a tribute. The Hawkers came from a distinguished sporting family with strong military and naval records and Lanoe from the outset set his sights on flying for the RFC. After attending the Central Flying School, he crossed to France in October 1914 with 6 Squadron equipped with BE2s and Henri Farmans. As the war in the air progressed, Hawker shone as both a combat pilot and commander. He was rapidly promoted and given command of 24 Squadron. He, like other pilots, flew numerous early fighter aircraft such as the Bristol Scout, BE2c, FE2b and the famous DH2. Casualty/death rates were appalling but this special band of brothers flew on regardless until their turn came. This book contains many combat reports by pilots of their actions in the air which make the most graphic reading. Of particular interest is von Richthofen's account of their fatal encounter. The relative merits, qualities and characteristics of the aircraft, both British, French and German, are discussed with pilots' opinions. As an insight into Great War combat air operations Hawker VC RFC Ace is unlikely to be surpassed. The Retreat from Mons 1914: Etreux to the Marne (Battle Lines: The Western Front By Car, By Bike and On Foot)

Par Peter Oldham. 2014
The British Army and her commonwealth Allies went to war in 1914 with little knowledge and experience of constructing permanent,…
shell proof protective structures. Some masonry fortifications, such as defensive blockhouses in South Africa, had been built but the Royal Engineers of the Army were more versed in simple temporary defences suitable for mobile warfare. Home defences were a limited number of forts around naval ports, and Martello Towers on the east coast. It was considered that the Navy was quite able to defend Britain's coasts. The Germans, on the other hand, as with the other continental countries such as France, Belgium, Italy, Holland, Poland, Austria, etc. had been constantly renewing and updating border forts for several centuries. They had also maintained fortification and siege elements of their armies, who were experienced in designing and constructing strong shelters. Both German and French armies began the war with a degree of expertise in what was to become a static war with little movement. However, by 1918 the British were to surpass both enemy and her allies in the design and construction, with supply and logistics, of such shell proof cover for troops and defensive positions. This book gives the history of development and innovation of concrete bunkers, pill boxes, blockhouses and general concrete constructions during the First World War. Many of these structures some showing obvious signs of war damage - still exist in France and Belgium today. All the existing structures, with photograph (except for some which are impractical, because of dense vegetation,) are shown within. Many entries have contemporary maps showing how they fitted into a defensive system, whilst for others the location can be identified from the text. GPS coordinates are given for each entry, except for a few which are on private land and where privacy has been requested.Menin Gate South: In Memory and In Mourning (In Memory and in Mourning)

discussion. Resulting from multi-year work of the Scripture and Doctrine Seminar, part of KLC's Scripture Collective, this book attends to the portrayal of divine action in one major biblical text, namely Hebrews. In the New Testament, Hebrews is on par with Romans in terms of importance but has too often been overlooked. Contributors to this volume explore the many different ways in which divine action is foregrounded and portrayed in Hebrews. As its name indicates, Hebrews overflows with Old Testament intertextuality, which also makes it a fertile ground for analysis of divine action stretching back into the Old Testament and opening out into different parts of the NT. The essays in this volume:rigorously work the interface of theology and exegesis, all related to Hebrews;offer an overview of the current state of discussion of divine action and the importance of exploring divine action in specific biblical texts, with special reference to William Abraham's recent 4 volume work with OUP;provide an overview of the reception history of Hebrews in theologies of divine action;explore how this has this played out in historical theology and what a retrieval of Hebrews for a theology of divine action might mean today;explore the relationship between the doctrine of God and divine action in Hebrews, including an engagement with classical theism;provocatively explore divine action in the OT, creation, and eschatology in Hebrews;explore the major theme in Hebrews of divine action through the ongoing priesthood of Jesus as portrayed in Hebrews;relate this all to preaching Hebrews today and to spiritual formation. The book's conclusion reflects on the primary action of God speaking in Hebrews. The Word Became Culture (Disruptive Cartographers: Doing Theology Latinamente)

Par Scot McKnight. 2023
Mark writes his biography of Jesus not only to record the story about Jesus, he also has discipleship to Jesus…
in mind. His central idea is that the life and death of Jesus shapes what the life of a follower of Jesus should look like.In this volume of the New Testament Everyday Bible Study series, Scot McKnight explores the Gospel of Mark, a fast-paced narrative with over half of the content focused on Jesus&’ final week. All along the disciples are observing and learning what it means to be a follower of this kind of Jesus. The Gospel of Mark tells the story of Jesus telling parables, performing miracles, suffering resistance, and interacting with religious authorities from Galilee to Jerusalem. And during all that, he is preparing disciples to follow him then and after his resurrection. In the New Testament Everyday Bible Study Series, widely respected biblical scholar Scot McKnight combines interpretive insights with pastoral wisdom for all the books of the New Testament. Each volume provides:Original Meaning. Brief, precise expositions of the biblical text and offers a clear focus for the central message of each passage.Fresh Interpretation. Brings the passage alive with fresh images and what it means to follow King Jesus.Practical Application. Biblical connections and questions for reflection and application for each passage.Bill Lancaster: The Life and Death of an Aviation Pioneer
Par Ralph Barker. 2015
Captain William Lancaster was the subject of public attention and controversy during his life as a record-breaking flyer, because of…
his love affair with Jessie Chubbie Miller (dubbed the Australian Aviatrix) and as the defendant in one of the most sensational murder trials of the twentieth century. His disappearance, which occurred during an attempt to break the London to Cape Town record in 1933, less than a year after his acquittal, led to speculation that his ill-prepared last flight had been driven by desperation, perhaps even guilt.Twenty nine years later, a French military patrol in the Sahara stumbled across the wreck of Bills plane and his body, along with his perfectly preserved log book. For eight days he had calmly recorded his thoughts, looking back over his life as he stoically faced death. In Bill Lancaster: the Final Verdict, we are presented with the original story in full (first published in 1969 as Verdict on a Lost Flyer), complete with an additional postscript written by the late author's daughter. Meticulously researched by Ralph Barker and written with the full cooperation of Chubbie Miller and the Lancaster family, it includes a complete transcript and photographs of the moving account contained within Lancaster's final diary a precious record that has since gone missing.Fallen Eagles: Airmen Who Survived The Great War Only to Die in Peacetime
Par Norman Franks. 2017
The 50 pilots featured in Fallen Eagles were all decorated for bravery during The Great War. All survived the conflict…
only to die flying in the postwar years. The causes of their deaths ranged from being casualties of small wars, then as now rife in the Middle East, mechanical failure or pilot error. The 1920s were still pioneering years for aviation and aviators and test flying, air races and displays, record attempts etc were fraught with dangers known and unknown. In addition to the better known names such as Sir John Alcock, Captain W Beauchamp-Proctor VC and Sammy Kincaid there are many that will be unfamiliar to all but the most ardent enthusiasts. But all have courage and love of flying in common and sadly luck ran out for each of these men who made a contribution to the history of flight. Thanks to acclaimed aviation historian Norman Franks, their names are not forgotten.
