The Power of One: How I Found the Strength to Tell the Truth and Why I Blew the Whistle on Facebook
Par Frances Haugen. 2023
The inside story of one woman’s quest to bring transparency and accountability to Big Tech, by the Facebook whistleblower who…
is determined to help us all retake control of our lives. In 2021, when news outlets feasted on “the Facebook Files,” Frances Haugen went public as the former employee who blew the whistle on the company by copying tens of thousands of pages of documents. She testified to Congress and spoke to the media. She was hailed at President Biden’s first State of the Union Address. She made sure everyone understood exactly what the documents revealed: Facebook knew it had accidentally changed its algorithm to reward extremism and refused to fix it; it knew that its customers were using the platform to foment violence, to spread falsehoods, to diminish the self-esteem of young women, and more. But how was it that Haugen was the only employee at the company who dared to step forward? The answer to that question is an inspiring tale of one young woman’s life and the choices she made. From an isolated childhood in Iowa to an unaccredited college, to one among the few women at Google in its heyday, Frances Haugen learned how to focus on what mattered, and to ignore her critics. To harness the strength of standing in the truth. The Power of One is equally inspiring—the story of a woman who went against the grain, again and again, and changed the world—and horrifying, as the culture and practices of Facebook are brought into the bright light of day, for the first time.Becoming Bionic and Other Ways Science Is Making Us Super

Powertrain Systems for a Sustainable Future: Proceedings of the International Conference on Powertrain Systems for a Sustainable Future 2023, London, UK, 29- 30 November 2023
Par Institution of Mechanical Engineers. 2024
The transport sector continues to shift towards alternative powertrains, particularly with the UK Government’s focus on ending the sale of…
petrol and diesel passenger cars by 2030 and increasing support for alternatives. Despite this announcement, the internal combustion could continue to play a significant role both in the passenger car market through the use of hybrids and sustainable low carbon fuels including hydrogen, as well as a key role in other sectors such as heavy-duty vehicles and off-highway applications across the globe. The contributions presented at the International Conference on Powertrain Systems for a Sustainable Future 2023 (London, UK, 29- 30 November 2023) focus on the internal combustion engine’s role in net-zero transport as well as covering developments in the wide range of propulsion systems available (electric, hydrogen internal combustion engines and fuel cells, sustainable fuels etc) and their associated powertrains. To achieve a sustainable future for transport across the globe we will need to deploy all technologies and so, to help understand how these might fit together, life-cycle analysis of future powertrain systems and energy will also be included. Powertrain Systems for a Sustainable Future provides a forum for engine, fuels, e-machine, fuel cell and powertrain experts to look closely at developments in powertrain technology required to meet the demands of the net-zero future and global competition in all sectors of the road transportation, off-highway, marine and stationary power industries. The Advent of PhyloCode: The Continuing Evolution of Biological Nomenclature
Par Michel Laurin. 2023
Biological nomenclature is an essential tool for storing and retrieving biological information. Yet traditional nomenclature poorly reflects evolutionary theory. Current…
biological nomenclature is one of the few fields promoting deliberately vague usage of technical terms. A new code based on evolutionary studies and phylogenetic results (the PhyloCode) will be a major milestone in biological nomenclature. Unfortunately, The PhyloCode and the companion volume are highly technical publications intended for practicing systematists. This book will reach a broader readership of those using nomenclature but who remain unaware of its theoretical foundations. Key Features Responds to the biodiversity crisis and the recent implementation of the PhyloCode. Summarizes the spectacular progress of phylogenetics which makes it both increasingly easy and crucially important to define precisely taxon names. Provides a 300-year historical perspective featuring high-profile characters, such as Linnaeus and Darwin. Summarizes for a broad readership a widely scattered, highly technical and underappreciated scientific literature. Documents the activities of the International Society for Phylogenetic Nomenclature, a scholarly society in which the author has played a prominent role.Biological Approaches to Regenerative Soil Systems (Books in Soils, Plants, and the Environment)
Par David Montgomery, Stephen Wood, Jules Pretty, Norman Uphoff, Andrew S. Ball, Olivier Husson, Mark Laing, Radha Prasanna, Janice E. Thies, Febri Doni, Odo Primavesi. 2023
Agriculture in the 21st century will need considerable modification to remain both productive and sustainable. Greater production is needed to…
meet the needs of our still-growing populations and to combat hunger and poverty. Declines in soil health and the pollution of water sources are making many of our production systems less tenable. These adverse trends are exacerbated more and more by the impacts of climate change. There are, fortunately, alternative methods available for agricultural practice that can countervail these constraints. Biological Approaches to Regenerative Soil Systems brings together the work of both researchers and practitioners to map out better approaches to contemporary agriculture that draw upon both old and new knowledge. It presents the science that underlies more biologically driven strategies as well as contemporary innovative experiences in diverse parts of the world. Both accepted research and these varied experiences encourage confidence that these approaches, not relying primarily on the introduction of new varieties and on exogenous inputs, can succeed. This book updates and revises a preceding volume Biological Approaches to Sustainable Soil Systems published by CRC Press in 2006. So much has been learned and done on this subject in the past decade and a half that a second edition was warranted. For instance, the first edition was published, knowledge about plant-soil microbiomes, which are a frequent focus in this book, has mushroomed. Because sustainability is a broad term and an end-state, the editors preferred to assemble expertise regarding regenerative agriculture, which is concerned with the means for achieving sustainability. The concept of regenerative soil systems, entities that are more complex and multifaceted than "soil" alone, also incorporates a concern with having more resilient agricultural systems, ones that are better able to cope with the multiple stresses of climate change that are foreseen for the decades ahead. The book’s chapters representing a wide range of disciplines were contributed by 84 scientists and practitioners from 20 countries. Although they come from persons with in-depth knowledge of their respective fields, the chapters are written to be accessible to readers who are not trained in the specialized subjects. Taken together, the chapters provide students, researchers, practitioners, planners, and policy makers with a comprehensive understanding of both the science and the steps needed to regenerate and sustain soil systems around the world for the long-term benefit of humankind and the environment.Physiology Of Work

and its relationship to work psychology and occupational medicine it goes on to explore the problems encountered via case studies. Rodhal describes methods for assessment of individual work capacities and workloads, and evaluation of working environments. Further chapters highlight: mental and emotional stresses, including case studies from management and air-traffic controllers; industrial heat and cold stress, with studies of polar and sea-going workers; and problems encountered in polluted atmospheres.Failure: Why Science is so Successful
Par Stuart Firestein. 2016
The general public has a glorified view of the pursuit of scientific research. However, the idealized perception of science as…
a rule-based, methodical system for accumulating facts could not be further from the truth. Modern science involves the idiosyncratic, often bumbling search for understanding in uncharted territories, full of wrong turns, false findings, and the occasional remarkable success. In his sequel to Ignorance (Oxford University Press, 2012), Stuart Firestein shows us that the scientific enterprise is riddled with mistakes and errors - and that this is a good thing! Failure: Why Science Is So Successful delves into the origins of scientific research as a process that relies upon trial and error, one which inevitably results in a hefty dose of failure. Scientists throughout history have relied on failure to guide their research, viewing mistakes as a necessary part of the process. Citing both historical and contemporary examples, Firestein strips away the distorted view of science as infallible to provide the public with a rare, inside glimpse of the messy realities of the scientific process. An insider's view of how science is carried out, this book will delight anyone with an interest in science, from aspiring scientists to curious general readers. Accessible and entertaining, Failure illuminates the greatest and most productive adventure of human history, with all the missteps along the way.The Lady Is a Spy is the audacious and riveting true story of Virginia Hall, America's greatest spy and unsung…
hero, brought to vivid life by acclaimed author Don Mitchell. When Hitler invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, Virginia Hall was traveling in Europe. Which was dangerous enough, but as fighting erupted across the continent, instead of returning home, she headed to France. In a country divided by freedom and fascism, Virginia was determined to do her part for the Allies. An ordinary woman from Baltimore, MD, she dove into the action, first joining a French ambulance unit and later becoming an undercover agent for the British Office of Strategic Services. Working as part of the intelligence network, she made her way to Vichy, coordinating Resistance movements, sabotaging the Nazis, and rescuing Allied soldiers. She passed in plain sight of the enemy, and soon found herself at the top of their most wanted list. But Virginia cleverly evaded discovery and death, often through bold feats and daring escapes. Her covert operations, capture of Nazi soldiers, and risky work as a wireless telegraph operator greatly contributed to the Allies' eventual win.Shining Star: Vera Rubin Discovers Dark Matter

the way for future women scientists in this engaging STEM/STEAM picture book biography. From the moment she first looked out her window at the night sky, future astronomer Vera Rubin was star-struck. Her cosmic questions about stars, galaxies, and the universe gave Vera the drive to build her own telescope and earn multiple degrees in astronomy, despite an army of naysayers who thought women shouldn&’t reach for the stars. But Vera did reach for the stars. Studying spiral galaxies, she searched the skies all through the night, using telescopes in unheated observatories, some of which barred women until Vera insisted they let her in. And her studies revealed something stellar: evidence for the existence of dark matter, the most mysterious substance in the universe.Today, scientists continue to build off of Vera&’s groundbreaking work as they strive to better understand dark matter. A trailblazing scientist, Vera Rubin changed people&’s understanding of both the universe and what a woman can do.Jackie and the Books She Loved

A scientific, brain-based approach that provides an understanding of psychic abilities, spirit communication, and energy healing.Jeff Tarrant was fascinated by…
the paranormal as a child but then his training as a neuropsychologist turned him into a hardcore skeptic. If something could not be reliably and consistently demonstrated in the laboratory, then it wasn&’t real. These rigid ideas were gradually worn away as he repeatedly witnessed and experienced things that simply should not be possible—telekenesis, clairvoyance, telepathy, mediumship, energy healing, and more….This book follows his journey of studying, interviewing, and testing a wide variety of mediums, psychics, and healers as he tries to determine what is going on in their brains when they engage in these supernormal abilities. Readers will get to know these gifted people, exploring what makes them tick and discovering firsthand evidence that this stuff is real. If we can understand how the psychic mind works, might the rest of us be able to use this information to help develop our own abilities? Becoming Psychic uses knowledge uncovered through case studies, expert interviews, and research to offer a variety of practical insights to help readers develop their own psi abilities. Each chapter concludes with a &“try it yourself&” section, helping readers apply specific concepts and techniques into their own psychic development practice. In addition to uncovering the tips, skills, and tools identified in Tarrant's research, the book also explores how to use brain-hacking technology, such as neurofeedback, audio visual entrainment, and pulsed electromagnetic fields to &“nudge&” the brain toward heightened psychic abilities--as well as quieting internal chatter, supporting empathy, and enhancing creativity—all the mental skills necessary to move from balance and wellness to the extraordinary! Becoming Psychic fills an important gap in the psychic development literature. There are books that tell the stories of psychics and mediums. There are books that focus on the science and evidence for these practices, and there are books devoted to teaching you how to develop your own skills. This book contains all of the above and more!Normal Broken: The Grief Companion for When It's Time to Heal but You're Not Sure You Want To

Par Robert N. Cahn, Chris Quigg. 2023
An enthralling and accessible account of humanity&’s quest to make sense of our physical world, told through interwoven tales of…
inspiration, tragedy, and triumph. How do the remarkable recent discoveries of the Higgs boson, dark matter, and dark energy connect with the equally revolutionary discoveries in centuries past? In Grace in All Simplicity, readers will delight in Cahn and Quigg's engaging prose and see how the infinite and the infinitesimal are joined. Today, physicists and astronomers are exploring distances from a billionth of a billionth of the human scale to the entire cosmos, and contemplating time intervals that range from less than a trillionth of a trillionth of a second out to far longer than the age of the universe. Leaving home in this metaphorical way requires devising new instruments that spectacularly expand our senses and conceiving original ways of thinking that expand our minds. This is at once an act of audacity and an exercise in humility. Grace in All Simplicity narrates the saga of how we have prospected for some of Nature&’s most tightly held secrets, the basic constituents of matter and the fundamental forces that rule them. Our current understanding of the world (and universe) we inhabit is the result of curiosity, diligence, and daring, of abstraction and synthesis, and of an abiding faith in the value of exploration. In these pages we will meet scientists of both past and present. These men and women are professional scientists and amateurs, the eccentric and the conventional, performers and introverts. Scientists themselves, Cahn and Quigg convey their infectious joy as they search for new laws of nature. Join the adventure as scientists ascend mountain tops and descend into caverns deep underground, travel to the coldest places on Earth, and voyage back in time to near the birth of the Universe. Visit today&’s great laboratories and the astounding instruments they house. Grace in All Simplicity is a thrilling voyage filled with improbable discoveries and the extraordinary community of people who make them. Together, we will travel the path to the Higgs boson, weigh the evidence for subliminal dark matter, and learn what makes scientists invoke a mysterious agent named "dark energy." We will behold the emergence of a compelling picture of matter and forces, simple in its structure, graceful in the interplay of its parts, but still tantalizingly incomplete.Inner Field Trip: 30 Days of Personal Exploration, Collective Liberation, and Generational Healing

Scientific breakthroughs that changed the way we understand the world—and the fascinating stories of the scientists behind them Some of…
the most significant breakthroughs in science don&’t receive widespread recognition until decades later, sometimes after their author&’s death. Nobel Prize–winner Max Planck, whose black-body radiation law established the discipline of quantum mechanics, stated this as what has become known as Planck&’s principle, commonly summarized as &“Science progresses one funeral at a time.&” In other words, for some truly groundbreaking discoveries, a new consensus builds only when proponents of the old consensus die off. Breakthrough discoveries require a paradigm shift, and it takes time and new minds for the new paradigm to be adopted. In Innovators, Donald Kirsch tells the stories of sixteen visionary scientists who suffered this fate, some now famous like Max Planck himself, Galileo, and Gregor Mendel, and some less well known. Among them are Barbara McClintock who, working with Indian corn, discovered transposons, also known as jumping genes, which provide a major mechanism driving biological evolution; Rachel Carson, catalyst for the environmental movement; and Roger Revelle, the climatologist whose findings were the first to be described by the term &“global warming.&” The breakthroughs cover fields from biology to medicine to physics and earth sciences and include the discovery of prions, life-changing treatments such as drugs for high blood pressure, ulcers, and organ transplantation; the process of continental drift; and our understanding of how molecules form matter.Beyond Genius: A Journey Through the Characteristics and Legacies of Transformative Minds
Par Bulent Atalay. 2023
An in-depth and unified exploration of genius in the arts and sciences through the life and works of five seminal…
intellectual and cultural figures: Leonardo da Vinci, William Shakespeare, Isaac Newton, Ludwig von Beethoven, and Albert Einstein.Who among us hasn't read Hamlet, listened to the Fifth Symphony, gazed at the Mona Lisa, or marveled at the three laws of physics and the Theory of Relativity and been struck with the same simple question: how on Earth did they do it? Where did these masters draw inspiration to produce some of the most stunning achievements in human history? Were their brains wired differently than ours? Did they have special traits or unique experiences that set them on the path to greatness? Genius is a broad and elusive concept, one that is divisive and hard to define—and gravely misunderstood. There are &“ordinary&” geniuses who achieve remarkable feats of brilliance, as well as &“magicians&” (a term James Gleick invoked to describe Richard Feynman) who make an outsize impact on their given field. But highest among them are transformative geniuses, those rare individuals who redefine their fields or open up new universes of thought altogether. These are the masters whose genius Bulent Atalay decodes in his engrossing, enlightening, and revelatory book. No, Atalay doesn&’t have a road map for how we might become the next Einstein or Leonardo, but his revolutionary study of genius gives us a stunning new lens through which to view humanity&’s most prolific thinkers and creators and perhaps pick up some inspiration along the way. At first, it seems that transformative geniuses don&’t follow any sort of topography. Their prodigious output looks effortless, they leap from summit to summit, and they probably couldn&’t explain exactly how they went about solving their problems. They might not even recognize themselves in the ways we talk about them today. Atalay argues that these heroes fit more of a mold than we might think. As evidence, he rigorously dissects the lives, traits, habits, and thought patterns of five exemplars—Leonardo, Shakespeare, Newton, Beethoven, and Einstein— to map the path of the transformative genius. How did Beethoven, who could not perform basic multiplication, innately encode the Fibonacci Sequence in his symphonies? Is it possible that we understate Shakespeare&’s poetic influence? How did Leonardo become equally prolific in both the arts and the sciences? How did Newton formulate the universal laws of physics, the basis of so many other sciences? And what prompted TIME Magazine to declare Einstein, a man whose very name is synonymous with genius, the &“Individual of the 20th Century&”? With great clarity and attention to detail, Atalay expertly traces how these five exemplars ascended to immortality and what their lives and legacies reveal about how transformative geniuses are madeThe Science of The Mandalorian: The Anatomy of a Space Western (The Science of)

space western in the Star Wars Universe.Star Wars dominates the film world. The combined box office revenue of the Star Wars movies equates to over $10 billion, making it the second highest-grossing film franchise of all time. But this franchise is no blaster from the past. Its fantastically successful films have now been followed by multiple television series set in that same galaxy far, far away. The franchise&’s flagship television series, and likely the firmest fan favorite for some time to come, is The Mandalorian. Tracing the tale of the titular bounty hunter, traveling across the furthest reaches of that mythic galaxy, The Mandalorian has been greatly praised and highly acclaimed for creating characters with gravitas and originality, worlds with depth and impact, resulting in some of the best Star Wars content ever. Even though it&’s set in deep space, The Mandalorian has as much in common with Western movies as it does with science fiction. Saloons. Bandits. &“Gun&” duels. Bounty hunters. Outlaws with a price on their heads. Space exploration as a &“final frontier.&” And a wild hero who doesn&’t quite belong in a lawless part of the Galaxy after the fall of the Empire. The Science of The Mandalorian takes you on a badass journey with a mysterious, lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy, where your beskar armor will protect you from many things, but not the sight of a small, green, carnivorous humanoid with big black eyes and mysterious powers. plant communities function, revealing a holistic, interconnected, communal, and sentient new world • Examines the attributes we share with trees and plants and how the behaviors of altruism, cooperation, and community are genetically coded in our beings • Looks at how to learn to see, think, imagine, and live with holistic eco-centric awareness and the benefits that come from working with our plant allies Breakthrough research is not only revealing a brilliant green world with amazing attributes like dispersed intelligence but also that humanity, like the tree and plant kingdom, thrives on innate cooperation, sharing, altruism, and community. Exploring the latest cutting-edge environmental and ecological studies, climate advisor and environmental advocate Judith Polich explains how we can now see how tree and plant communities function, revealing a holistic, interconnected, communal, and seemingly sentient new world. She explains how trees communicate, how they share resources, and other ways in which they express holistic and cooperative behaviors. Looking at the new scientific understanding of the evolutionary basis of altruism, cooperation, and community—and how these behaviors are genetically coded in our beings—the author examines the attributes we share with trees and other plant communities. She explores the healing powers offered by the plant kingdom, not just as medicines but through shared sentience that can help heal our sense of dissociation and disenchantment. Revealing how to see, think, imagine, and live with holistic eco-centric awareness, the author discusses how the stories we tell ourselves and our spiritual belief systems are becoming greener, including a resurgence of beliefs that originated with plant teachers. She also explores how to overcome our current cognitive biases through greater interaction with plant intelligence. By viewing the world through a greener lens, not only can we reframe and unravel the deeper causes of the climate crisis, but we can also help co-create a new more conscious world with our plant allies.
