Par Oliver Mutanga. 2024
This book uses Ubuntu philosophy to illuminate the voices of people with disabilities from Sub-Saharan Africa. Disability literature is largely…
dominated by scholars and studies from the Global North, and these studies are largely informed by Global North theories and concepts. Although disability literature in the Global South is now fast growing, most studies continue to utilise conceptual, theoretical, and philosophical frameworks that are framed within Global North contexts. This presents two major challenges: Firstly, the voices of people with disabilities in the Global South remain on the fringes of disability discourses. Secondly, when their voices are heard, their realities are distorted. This edited book, consisting of 11 chapters, provides case studies from Botswana, Ghana, Lesotho, Uganda, and South Africa, explores disability in various fields: Inclusive education, higher education, environment, Open Distance Learning, and Technical and Vocational Education and Technical Colleges. The book contributes to the ways in which disability is understood and experienced in the Global South thereby challenging the Western hegemonic discourses on disability. This collection of contributions will be of interest to all scholars and students of disability studies, development studies, medical sociology, and African studies.People Skills for Behavior Analysts

into two primary parts – Foundational Skills and Specialized Skills – this book addresses an impressive breadth of people skills, focusing on intrapersonal and interpersonal skills, collaboration, consultation and training, leadership, and resource development. Relying on recent evidence-based practices and relevant literature tailored to meet the new BACB Task List, Professional & Ethical Compliance Code, and Supervised Independent Fieldwork requirements, the text includes contributions from leading figures from a wide variety of applied behavior analysis subfields to provide a truly balanced overview. The book delves into the literature from fields related to behavior analysis, such as counselling, psychology, graphic design, management and education, and applies these perspectives to behavioral theories and principles to provide students, new graduates, and seasoned professionals with research, best practices, reflective questions, and practical techniques. From reflecting on one’s practice, to learning essential therapeutic skills, running a great meeting, becoming a ‘super’ supervisor, and delivering a memorable presentation, all people skills are included in one place for the behavior practitioner. This is a valuable resource for undergraduate and graduate students studying Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), and will also appeal to recent graduates and behavior analysts looking to improve their existing skillset.First Responder Mental Health: A Clinician's Guide

Par Chelsea Butters Wooding, Douglas A. Barba, Stiliani “Ani” Chroni, Sarah L. Castillo. 2024

performance environments. Offering a companion text to Building Consulting Skills for Sport and Performance Psychology: An International Case Study Collection, this book provides three solutions for each of the case studies introduced. In so doing, it highlights that there is no "one-answer-fits-all" solution to the common issues with sport and performance psychology consulting and offers various suggestions for how an individual may wish to approach these and similar cases. Solutions address the CEDI principles (Case Conceptualization, Ethical Considerations, Diversity Awareness/Reflection, and Intervention Planning and Evaluation), as well as any case-specific questions. This clearly structured book serves as a useful resource for instructors looking to deepen discussion and offer alternatives to students’ ideas on how to approach certain cases. It will also be of interest to practitioners when approaching similar situations in their own work and looking for new pathways that they may not have considered.Sad Happens: A Celebration of Tears
Par Brandon Stosuy. 2023
A beautifully illustrated, celebratory anthology exploring sadness—and the transformative power of tears. When was the last time you cried? Was it…
because you were sad? Or happy? Overwhelmed, or frustrated? Maybe from relief or from pride? Was it in public or in private? Did you feel better afterwards, or worse? The reasons that we cry—and the circumstances in which we shed a tear—are often surprising and beautiful. Sad Happens is a collective, multi-faceted archive of tears that captures the complexity and variety of these circumstances. We hear from Mike Birbiglia on the role that grief and pain have in comedy; Jia Tolentino on how motherhood made her cry in both hormonal joy and fervent rage; and Hanif Abdurraqib on the intimacy of crying on planes. We hear from Phoebe Bridgers on poignant moments of departure and JP Brammer on the strange disappointments of success; Matt Berninger on becoming a crybaby in his adulthood and Hua Hsu on crying during a moment of public uncertainty. We also hear from everyday people in a range of professions: an actor on the tips she learned from drag queens about preserving a full face of makeup while crying; a zookeeper on mourning the animals who have died during her tenure; a bartender on crying in the walk-in; and a TV critic on the shows that have moved her. Brimming with humanity, this anthology is confirmation that sad happens—but so does joy, love, a sense of community, and a host of other emotions. By turns moving and affirming, Sad Happens is an emotional balm and visual delight.Happiness in Journalism
Par Mark Deuze, Claudia Mellado, Valérie Bélair-Gagnon, Avery E. Holton. 2024
This book examines how journalism can overcome harmful institutional issues such as work-related trauma and precarity, focusing specifically on questions…
of what happiness in journalism means, and how one can be successful and happy on the job. Acknowledging profound variations across people, genres of journalism, countries, types of news organizations, and methodologies, this book brings together an array of international perspectives from academia and practice. It suggests that there is much that can be done to improve journalists’ subjective well-being, despite there being no one-size-fits-all solution. It advocates for a shift in mindset as much in theoretical as in methodological approaches, moving away from a focus on platforms and adaptation to pay real attention to the human beings at the center of the industry. That shift in mindset and approach involves exploring what happiness is, how happiness manifests in journalism and media industries, and what future we can imagine that would be better for the profession. Happiness is conceptualized from both psychological and philosophical perspectives. Issues such as trauma, harassment, inequality, digital security, and mental health are considered alongside those such as precarity, recruitment, emotional literacy, intelligence, resilience, and self-efficacy. Authors point to norms, values and ethics in their regions and suggest best practices based on their experience. Constituting a first-of-its-kind study and guide, Happiness in Journalism is recommended reading for journalists, educators, and advanced students interested in topics relating to journalists’ mental health and emotion, media management, and workplace well-being. This book is accompanied by an online platform which supports videos, exercises, reports and links to useful further reading.Curing Stubborn Depression: Emerging & Breakthrough Therapies for Treatment-Resistant Depression

increased interest globally, there has been an under-representation of academic work on work-life balance across the African continent. So, this book serves as a collection of cases from various contexts across Africa and an exploration of the challenges and how best to manage human resources in this ‘Mother Continent’ with phenomenal potential. The book’s contributions draw on various types of research (conceptual, theoretical and empirical) and incorporate contextual issues such as technology, politics, culture, and economics to supplement the readers’ insights into the varying work-life balance experiences in African countries. By highlighting theoretical underpinnings and emphasising the practical relevance of issues related to managing work and non-work commitments, this book will offer an insightful guide for students and scholars interested in Business Management, Human Resource Management, Sociology of Work, and Industrial and Organisational Psychology in developing economies. This three-volume set introduces the practice of advanced, ‘dialectical’ systems-level problem solving in both the social and natural sciences. social science, it opens new vistas regarding organizational, strategy, and work design. In the natural sciences, it provides heretofore missing conceptions of physical systems in peril due to the climate crisis. In addition, the author draws conclusions that are important for advancing generative AI. The monograph presents novel conceptual tools that directly impact the internal structure of a systems analyst’s mental processing in real time. While the first volume lays the theoretical groundwork for dialectical systems analysis, the second, focusing on the nature of work, lays bare the structure of complex thinking in terms of the ‘thought forms’ it requires. In order to facilitate better understanding of the principles taught in the first two volumes, the third volume provides a Manual of Dialectical Thought Forms, which is the only one in existence today.Personalmanagement bedeutet im Kern die Betreuung von Führungskräften und Mitarbeitenden und ist eine hochpolitische kommunikative Aufgabe. special populations, such as children with intellectual and hearing disabilities and illiterate adults. Originally published in Portuguese, this contributed volume is now translated into English and presents for the first time to international researchers and students a comprehensive overview of a research program developed for more than three decades in Brazil which gave birth to a unique teaching program based on the concept of stimulus equivalence: the Learning to Read and Write in Small Steps. The book is divided into four parts. The first part presents the theoretical framework and the historical context in which the teaching program was developed by the group led by Drs. Julio Cesar de Rose and Deisy das Graças de Souza, currently organized in the National Institute of Science and Technology on Behavior, Cognition, and Learning (INCT/ECCE). The second part describes the modules that make up the Learning to Read and Write in Small Steps teaching program. The third part presents results of empirical research conducted with children with intellectual and hearing disabilities and illiterate adults. Finally, the fourth part presents contributions from other areas of knowledge – such as speech therapy, linguistics, and education – to the understanding of reading and writing and possible dialogues between them and behavior analysis. Contributions of Behavior Analysis to Reading and Writing Comprehension will be of interest to researchers and students in the fields of psychology and education interested in the application of behavior analysis to teaching and learning processes. It will also be a valuable resource for professionals directly working in educational institutions, such as elementary school teachers and psycho-pedagogues. The translation of the original manuscript in Portuguese was done with the help of artificial intelligence. The present version has been revised technically and linguistically by the authors in collaboration with a professional translator.Scenes of Attention: Essays on Mind, Time, and the Senses
Par Burnett, D. Graham; Smith, Justin E. H.. 2023
Are we paying enough attention? At least since the nineteenth century, critics have alleged a widespread and profound failure of…
attentiveness—to others, to ourselves, to the world around us, to what is truly worthy of focus. Why is there such great anxiety over attention? What is at stake in understanding attention and the challenges it faces? This book investigates attention from a range of disciplinary perspectives, including philosophy, history, anthropology, art history, and comparative literature. Each chapter begins with a concrete scene whose protagonists are trying—and often failing—to attend. Authors examine key moments in the history of the study of attention; pose attention as a philosophical problem; explore the links between attention, culture, and technology; and consider the significance of attention for conceptualizations of human subjectivity. Readers encounter nineteenth-century experiments in boredom, ornithologists conveying sound through field notations, wearable attention-enhancing prosthetics, students using online learning platforms, and inquiries into attention as a cognitive state and moral virtue.Amid mounting concern about digital mediation of experience, the rise of “surveillance capitalism,” and the commodification of attention, Scenes of Attention deepens the thinking that is needed to protect the freedom of attention and the forms of life that make it possible.Reaching and Teaching Neurodivergent Learners in STEM: Strategies for Embracing Uniquely Talented Problem Solvers

incompleteness it laid down the program to be followed for the next few decades of my life." Thus wrote C. G. Jung about his most famous and influential work, the one that marked the beginning of his divergence from the psychoanalytic school of Freud. In this book Jung explores the fantasy system of Frank Miller, the young American woman whose account of her poetic and vivid mental images helped lead him to his redefinition of libido while encouraging his explorations in mythology. Published in 1912 as Wandlungen und Symbole der Libido, this is a key text for the study of the formation of Jung's ideas and for understanding his personal and psychological condition during this crucial time. Miller's fantasies, with their mythological implications, supported Jung's notion that libido is not primarily sexual energy, as Freud had described it, but rather psychic energy in general, which springs from the unconscious and appears in consciousness as symbols. Jung shows how libido organizes itself as a metaphorical "hero," who first battles for deliverance from the "mother," the symbol of the unconscious, in order to become conscious, then returns to the unconscious for renewal. Jung's analytical commentary on these fantasies is a complex study of symbolic parallels derived from mythology, religion, ethnology, art, literature, and psychiatry, and foreshadows his fundamental concept of the collective unconscious and its contents, the archetypes. This three-volume set introduces the practice of advanced, ‘dialectical’ systems-level problem solving in both the social and natural sciences.
