On Painting
Par Leon Battista Alberti, Martin Kemp. 1991
Artist, architect, poet and philosopher, Leon Battista Alberti revolutionized the history of art with his theories of perspective in On…
Painting (1435). Inspired by the order and beauty inherent in nature, his groundbreaking work sets out the principles of distance, dimension and proportion; instructs the painter on how to use the rules of composition, representation, light and colour to create work that is graceful and pleasing to the eye; and stipulates the moral and artistic pre-requisites of the successful painter. On Painting had an immediate and profound influence on Italian Renaissance artists including Ghiberti, Fra Angelico and Veneziano and on later figures such as Leonardo da Vinci, and remains a compelling theory of art. Par Keith Tribe, Alexander Schmidt, Friedrich. Schiller. 2016
“The artist is certainly the child of his age, but all the worse for him if he is at the…
same time its pupil, even worse its minion.” One of the most profound works of German philosophy, Friedrich Schiller’s On the Aesthetic Education of Man examines politics, revolution, and the history of ideas in order argue that art should have a greater role in shaping society. Deeply disillusioned with the course of the French Revolution, Schiller expressed his complaints in a series of letters to a patron, an impassioned attempt to drag mankind upward from failure to greatness by placing ideas of aesthetic education at the heart of the human experience: “Our era has actually taken both wrong turnings, and has fallen prey to coarseness on the one path, lethargy and perversity on the other. Having strayed along both paths, it is beauty that can lead [us] back.”The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness
Par Michelle Alexander. 2020
Seldom does a book have the impact of Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow. Since it was first published in…
2010, it has been cited in judicial decisions and has been adopted in campus-wide and community-wide reads; it helped inspire the creation of the Marshall Project and the new $100 million Art for Justice Fund; it has been the winner of numerous prizes, including the prestigious NAACP Image Award; and it has spent nearly 250 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Most important of all, it has spawned a whole generation of criminal justice reform activists and organizations motivated by Michelle Alexander’s unforgettable argument that “we have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it.” As the Birmingham Newsproclaimed, it is “undoubtedly the most important book published in this century about the U.S.” Now, ten years after it was first published, The New Press is proud to issue a tenth-anniversary edition with a new preface by Michelle Alexander that discusses the impact the book has had and the state of the criminal justice reform movement today. The Advent of PhyloCode: The Continuing Evolution of Biological Nomenclature
Par Michel Laurin. 2023
Biological nomenclature is an essential tool for storing and retrieving biological information. Yet traditional nomenclature poorly reflects evolutionary theory. Current…
biological nomenclature is one of the few fields promoting deliberately vague usage of technical terms. A new code based on evolutionary studies and phylogenetic results (the PhyloCode) will be a major milestone in biological nomenclature. Unfortunately, The PhyloCode and the companion volume are highly technical publications intended for practicing systematists. This book will reach a broader readership of those using nomenclature but who remain unaware of its theoretical foundations. Key Features Responds to the biodiversity crisis and the recent implementation of the PhyloCode. Summarizes the spectacular progress of phylogenetics which makes it both increasingly easy and crucially important to define precisely taxon names. Provides a 300-year historical perspective featuring high-profile characters, such as Linnaeus and Darwin. Summarizes for a broad readership a widely scattered, highly technical and underappreciated scientific literature. Documents the activities of the International Society for Phylogenetic Nomenclature, a scholarly society in which the author has played a prominent role.
Aventures théâtrales is a practical guide designed to provide language instructors with the tools to use drama in French language courses, providing essential resources to develop learners’ communication skills through drama activities in the classroom. This book is structured around four axes: The origins of the use of theatre in teaching; the pronunciation of French adapted to dramatic activities; a repertoire of activities leading to the production from A to Z of a show; and the digital adventure: establishing an emotional and energetic connection between participants in a virtual setting. The book also offers a unique exploration of audio theatre, from radio plays to podcasts, with guidance on practical applications outside of the classroom setting. The remote and in person exercises included in this book are an invaluable resource for instructors. Aventures théâtrales is intended for instructors of French at B2 (CEFR) or intermediate (ACTFL) level interested in using drama in courses teaching French as a foreign or second language. The Metaweb: The Next Level of the Internet

the Web. Readers from all walks of life will learn something ancient, something novel, and something practical. Those who give it careful consideration will never see the Web the same way again. This book proclaims into existence decentralized public space above the webpage that enables the shift from personal to collective computing. The Web's next frontier is the Metaweb, a hyper-dimensional web over Today's Web that connects people and information silos, with accountability and fair value exchange. The Metaweb can drastically reduce false information, abuse, and scams, as well as enable the unprecedented level of collaboration needed to address humanity's global challenges. The book posits a symbiotic relationship between AI and the Metaweb, where AI assists in generating, organizing, and curating content, while the Metaweb provides the necessary constraints, data, and context for AI to function effectively, transparently, and in alignment with humanity. The AI-assisted collaboration among humans on the Metaweb will enable a vast collective intelligence and the capture of tremendous untapped value. Par David Montgomery, Stephen Wood, Jules Pretty, Norman Uphoff, Andrew S. Ball, Olivier Husson, Mark Laing, Radha Prasanna, Janice E. Thies, Febri Doni, Odo Primavesi. 2023
Agriculture in the 21st century will need considerable modification to remain both productive and sustainable. Greater production is needed to…
meet the needs of our still-growing populations and to combat hunger and poverty. Declines in soil health and the pollution of water sources are making many of our production systems less tenable. These adverse trends are exacerbated more and more by the impacts of climate change. There are, fortunately, alternative methods available for agricultural practice that can countervail these constraints. Biological Approaches to Regenerative Soil Systems brings together the work of both researchers and practitioners to map out better approaches to contemporary agriculture that draw upon both old and new knowledge. It presents the science that underlies more biologically driven strategies as well as contemporary innovative experiences in diverse parts of the world. Both accepted research and these varied experiences encourage confidence that these approaches, not relying primarily on the introduction of new varieties and on exogenous inputs, can succeed. This book updates and revises a preceding volume Biological Approaches to Sustainable Soil Systems published by CRC Press in 2006. So much has been learned and done on this subject in the past decade and a half that a second edition was warranted. For instance, the first edition was published, knowledge about plant-soil microbiomes, which are a frequent focus in this book, has mushroomed. Because sustainability is a broad term and an end-state, the editors preferred to assemble expertise regarding regenerative agriculture, which is concerned with the means for achieving sustainability. The concept of regenerative soil systems, entities that are more complex and multifaceted than "soil" alone, also incorporates a concern with having more resilient agricultural systems, ones that are better able to cope with the multiple stresses of climate change that are foreseen for the decades ahead. The book’s chapters representing a wide range of disciplines were contributed by 84 scientists and practitioners from 20 countries. Although they come from persons with in-depth knowledge of their respective fields, the chapters are written to be accessible to readers who are not trained in the specialized subjects. Taken together, the chapters provide students, researchers, practitioners, planners, and policy makers with a comprehensive understanding of both the science and the steps needed to regenerate and sustain soil systems around the world for the long-term benefit of humankind and the environment. The Romantic Revolution in America: Main Currents in American Thought
Par Vernon Louis Parrington. 2012
The development of literature between 1800 and 1860 in the United States was heavily influenced by two wars. The War…
of 1812 hastened the development of nineteenth-century ideals, and the Civil War uprooted certain growths of those vigorous years. The half century between these dramatic episodes was a period of extravagant vigor, the final outcome being the emergence of a new middle class.Parrington argues that America was becoming a new world with undreamed potential. This new era was no longer content with the ways of a founding generation. The older America of colonial days had been static, rationalistic, inclined to pessimism, and fearful of innovation. During the years between the Peace of Paris (1763) and the end of the War of 1812, older America was dying. The America that emerged, which is the focal point of this volume, was a shifting, restless world, eager to better itself, bent on finding easier roads to wealth than the plodding path of natural increase. The culture of this period also changed. Formal biographies written in this period often gave way to eulogy; it was believed that a writer was under obligation to speak well of the dead. Consequently, scarcely a single commentary of the times can be trusted, and the critic is reduced to patching together his account out of scanty odds and ends. A new introduction by Bruce Brown highlights the life of Vernon Louis Parrington and explains the importance of this second volume in the Pulitzer Prize-winning study.Physiology Of Work

and its relationship to work psychology and occupational medicine it goes on to explore the problems encountered via case studies. around them. Drawing on long-standing political traditions, these women bound together to revolutionize social norms and contest gender inequality. In Montreal, women activists inspired by Red Power, Black Power, and Quebec liberation, among other social movements, mounted a multifront campaign against social injustice. Countercurrents looks beyond the defining waves metaphor to write a new history of feminism that incorporates parallel social movements into the overarching narrative of the women’s movement. Case studies compare and reflect on the histories of the Quebec Native Women’s Association, the Congress of Black Women, the Front de libération des femmes du Québec, various Haitian women’s organizations, and the Collectif des femmes immigrantes du Québec and the political work they did. Bringing to light previously overlooked archival and oral sources, Amanda Ricci introduces a new cast of characters to the history of feminism in Quebec. The book presents a unique portrait of the resurgence of feminist activism, demonstrating its deep roots in Indigenous and Black communities, its transnational scope, and its wide-ranging inspirations and preoccupations. Advancing cross‐cultural perspectives on women’s movements, Countercurrents looks to the history of women’s activism in Montreal and finds new ways of defining feminist priorities and imagining feminist futures.Nature and Supernature (St. Michael's Lectures #Vol. 1973)

Lectures as a forum for outstanding international scholars to examine the question of God in modern thought. The theme for the lecture series is much the same as that of the famous Gifford Lectures, but the approach is not only philosophical but also theological. The uniqueness lies primarily in the dynamic inherent in the structure of the series. A lecture in a tripartite form (over a three-day period) is given each fall. As the series unfolds, each lecturer is to enter into dialogue with the immediately preceding lecturer and, to the extent that he wishes, he may respond to other former lecturers in the series. At the same time, each expands the discussion by his or her own creative contribution. As a result there will develop an ongoing exchange among thinkers of international reputation.Native Seattle: Histories From the Crossing-Over Place (Weyerhaeuser Environmental Books)

dramatic years in Honduras following the June 2009 military coup that deposed President Manuel Zelaya, told in part through first-person experiences, layered into deeper political analysis. Par Barnabas Piper. 2017
Curiosity is such a childish word, right? Not so fast. Just because we grow up, it doesn't mean we should…
lose our wonder about the world or the people around us. When we do, we lose so much, because curious is how God made us to be. Without curiosity a Christian's life is incomplete. His relationship with God is incomplete. His connections to others are incomplete. He doesn't know how to interact with the world around him - politics, media, art, entertainment, science, and so much more simply fly past or overwhelm him. Without curiosity he can never discover deep things, deep connections God tucked below the banal surface of life.
