Introduction to Stochastic Level Crossing Techniques
Par Percy H. Brill. 2023
Introduction to Stochastic Level Crossing Techniques describes stochastic models and their analysis using the System Point Level Crossing method (abbreviated…
SPLC or LC). This involves deriving probability density functions (pdfs) or cumulative probability distribution functions (cdfs) of key random variables, applying simple level-crossing limit theorems developed by the author. The pdfs and/or cdfs are used to specify operational characteristics about the stochastic model of interest. The chapters describe distinct stochastic models and associated key random variables in the models. For each model, a figure of a typical sample path (realization, i.e., tracing over time) of the key random variable is displayed. For each model, an analytic (Volterra) integral equation for the stationary pdf of the key random variable is created−by inspection of the sample path, using the simple LC limit theorems. This LC method bypasses a great deal of algebra, usually required by other methods of analysis. The integral equations will be solved directly, or computationally. This book is meant for students of mathematics, management science, engineering, natural sciences, and researchers who use applied probability. It will also be useful to technical workers in a range of professions. Key Features: A description of one representative stochastic model (e.g., a single-server M/G/1 queue; a multiple server M/M/c queue; an inventory system; etc.) Construction of a typical sample path of the key random variable of interest (e.g., the virtual waiting time or workload in queues; the net on-hand inventory in inventory systems; etc.) Statements of the simple LC theorems, which connect the sample-path upcrossing and downcrossing rates across state-space levels, to simple mathematical functions of the stationary pdf of the key random variable, at those state-space levels Creation of (usually Volterra) integral equations for the stationary pdf of the key random variable, by inspection of the sample path Direct analytic solution of the integral equations, where feasible; or, computational solutions of the integral equations Use of the derived stationary pdfs for obtaining operational characteristics of the modelClimate Change Adaptation and Green Finance: The Arctic and Non-Arctic World (Routledge Advances in Climate Change Research)

a game changer in this sensitive region. Bringing together contributions from a range of experts in the field, Climate Change Adaptation and Green Finance assesses the costs of inaction versus the costs of action based on case study examples of climate finance and sustainable investment in the Arctic region. The authors draw on data from the Sixth Assessment Report published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and respond with a solutions-based framework. This is developed around the notion of a new, carbon-neutral economy in the Arctic and presents methods for unlocking carbon finance and long-term climate investment in the region, such as finance for Arctic entrepreneurs and resilient sustainable investment structures. This volume also looks at the role of finance in meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the ways in which innovation in investment will help shape the future of the Arctic. Climate Change Adaptation and Green Finance will be of great interest to students and scholars of climate change, sustainable finance and sustainable businessDecision Intelligence dt.

Par Victor A. Matheson, Robert Baumann. 2023
This edited volume discusses the economic impact of sports facilities, franchises, and events on local economies. Written in honor of…
Robert Baade upon his retirement, the book provides a state-of-the-art of current research on the economic impact of sports, and recognizes the seminal contributions that Dr. Baade has made to this topic. The analysis of the economic impact of spectator sports is a vital public policy topic as $75 billion has been spent on stadium construction since 1990 in the US alone, with nearly $35 billion of this coming from taxpayer subsidies. True public cost of sports franchises is much higher than this as this figure excludes facilities outside the Big 5 domestic leagues (like NASCAR track, NCAA facilities, minor league baseball, and the Canadian Football Leagues), public subsidies for major events like the Super Bowl or Olympic Games, and excludes sports subsidies outside of direct stadium construction subsidies.Including contributions from many of the most notable researchers studying the economic impact of sports, topics include impacts of stadiums and franchises on local economies, labor markets, and tax collections, the effect of sports franchises on property values, and changes in the public and academic discourse on sports subsidies over time. This volume will be of interest to researchers and students of sports economics, management, public policy, and public finance.Green Approaches in Sustainable Aviation: Proceedings of International Symposium on Sustainable Aviation 2022 (Sustainable Aviation)

This book journeys through human history, beginning with the tribal age and ending with an option for what's to come…
after the knowledge age. It examines the profound influence that culture, civilization, and materialism have on the distribution of wealth, knowledge, and power. It critically examines the shortcomings of current education and healthcare systems, shedding light on the difficulties nations face in effectively addressing the needs of citizens and population including refugees. The author challenges the existing societal frameworks, advocating for the adoption of novel political and economic systems firmly grounded in the principles of justice, freedom, and equity. At the core of this is a folk-political system that values productivity and empowers workers and workforces to innovate.Written for a discerning audience of economists, policymakers, scholars, and students, the book shifts the paradigm of the knowledge age away from issues with power and toward a future that values justice, freedom, and sustainability. Readers will gain invaluable insights into reshaping our societies, fostering inclusive economic growth, and ensuring a better world for all.OOFOS Recovery Footwear

Eastman Kodak Company: Restructuring a Melting Ice Cube
Par Stuart C. Gilson, Sarah L. Abbott, John D. Dionne. 2015
In May 2013, senior managers of GSO Capital Partners, an $80 billion credit-oriented investment firm owned by The Blackstone Group,…
are considering what to do next with their investment in the senior secured debt of Eastman Kodak Company. Once a great company and an icon of American business, Kodak had fallen on desperately hard economic times as its traditional business of manufacturing cameras and photographic film had all but disappeared with the rise of digital photography, causing its annual revenues to plummet from $13 billion to $6 billion, and its stock price to fall by 95%, between 2003 and 2011. Having taken various positions in Kodak's debt during the previous four years, GSO is now faced with a major decision. Under the company's recently proposed plan of reorganization, secured creditors were to be given 85% of the company's common stock, but unsecured creditors objected to the plan. Now, six months later, GSO has brought an amended plan to the table, under which it would commit to backstop a $406 million equity rights offering that would be made directly to all the unsecured creditors. This offer might bring the objecting creditors on board, but could also require an additional large capital commitment by GSO, which was already heavily invested in a highly troubled business that many viewed as a "melting ice cube."K.C. minerals trading business called Wah Chang in the United States during the interwar years. He acquired a prominent role in tungsten, the strongest natural metal on earth, and during World War II he played a major role in securing supplies of the strategic mineral from China and Latin America for the United States war effort. The case is set against the background of the era of the Chinese Exclusion Acts between 1882 and 1943 which largely curtailed Chinese immigration to the United States and denied ethnic Chinese citizenship. It explores how Li was able to build his brokerage business in such a setting on the basis of contacts in both China and the United States. It ends with the Communist Revolution in China in 1949 which appeared to threaten his dual identity.Individual FoodService, Kelso, and Ken Sweder
Par Jo Tango, Alys Ferragamo. 2022
When and how much risk to take? In October 2020, Ken Sweder, CEO of Individual FoodService ("IFS"), contemplated this question…
as he evaluated a proposal to acquire Brady Industries, a distributor of janitorial and sanitation products. Sweder and his private equity partners at Kelso & Company had been working hard to grow IFS, and now they had a unique opportunity to make a transformative acquisition. The deal had great potential and risks; it was unclear if this was the right time to make such a large, complex acquisition amid disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic. Sweder needed to decide if he should recommend the transaction and, if so, how to set the right value creation plan for the combined company.Wordle

the Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) initiative and have contributed to increase attention in practice, especially of large enterprises, resulting in different routes of action. This book provides a comprehensive overview of international business transactions at the customer interface with a focus on the specific role and tasks of the functions within a company. Three basic transactional models are introduced and analyzed, particularly to what extent they induce an international tax risk to the enterprise, in order to explore meaningful choices for action. The book inspires experienced practitioners as well as young professionals with or without formal business education to think beyond the context of their own experience and to define, implement and monitor tax-compliant transactional processes in their respective business. Individuals in companies are sensitized for compliance to these business processes resulting in a reduction of a hidden or frequently neglected, but significant tax risk. This book helps executives and managers create a shared understanding on international business transactions and facilitate detailed cross-functional discussions. This book combines the field of economics —especially monetary theory— with other disciplines like ecology, physics, humanities, social sciences and…
development theory. This transdisciplinary approach makes the book a unique contribution for researchers, students, policy makers and professionals working in governmental or nongovernmental institutions, as well as anyone interested in society’s well-being and achieving a true social-ecological transformation. It is written in an accessible language in order to reach a broad audience. In 2015, more than 190 world leaders recognized that the world is on a “collision course” (Max-Neef) and committed to 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Many conferences and high-level meetings have been held since then, and one of the most frequently discussed topics is how to finance these goals. There is a widespread belief that coming up with more money for sustainable development will “do the trick”. Usually, the discussions focus on finding additional financial resources in order to achieve the goals faster. In this book it is argued that not only is more money needed, but it needs to be a different kind of money. The book demonstrates that ALL but one of the SDGs are directly linked to our monetary system, which —being completely unnatural— can be seen as the most important, but at the same time least recognized, reason for market failure. Many people think we just need to do more, faster, better. Very few say that we have done things fundamentally wrong and that the institutions and values which motivated us to do those things need to be changed. It will be concluded that only if we change our unnatural design of money to a more natural one, will we be able to reach these goals
