your guide to discovering it. In this new book, you'll learn how the module system improves reliability and maintainability, and how it can be used to reduce tight coupling of system components.Foreword by Kevlin Henney.Purchase of the print book includes a free eBook in PDF, Kindle, and ePub formats from Manning Publications. You'll find registration instructions inside the print book.About the TechnologyPackaging code into neat, well-defined units makes it easier to deliver safe and reliable applications. The Java Platform Module System is a language standard for creating these units. With modules, you can closely control how JARs interact and easily identify any missing dependencies at startup. This shift in design is so fundamental that starting with Java 9, all core Java APIs are distributed as modules, and libraries, frameworks, and applications will benefit from doing the same.About the BookThe Java Module System is your in-depth guide to creating and using Java modules. With detailed examples and easy-to-understand diagrams, you'll learn the anatomy of a modular Java application. Along the way, you'll master best practices for designing with modules, debugging your modular app, and deploying to production. What's insideThe anatomy of a modular Java appBuilding modules from source to JARMigrating to modular JavaDecoupling dependencies and refining APIsHandling reflection and versioningCustomizing runtime imagesUpdated for Java 11About the ReaderPerfect for developers with some Java experience.About the AuthorNicolai Parlog is a developer, author, speaker, and trainer. Par Boris Groysberg, V. Kasturi Rangan, Kerry Herman, Annelena Lobb. 2022
The OneTen case study examines the nonprofit organization's origin story. Its founding team includes a roster of corporate superstars-Ken Chenault…
(former CEO of American Express), Ken Frazier (former CEO of Merck), Charles Phillips (chair of Infor), Ginni Rometty (former CEO of IBM), and Kevin Sharer (former CEO and chair of Amgen). In May 2020, soon after the murder of George Floyd, this group came together to form a nonprofit that would partner with companies, talent developers, and Black talent, with the goal of hiring one million Black people in the U.S. into jobs with family-sustaining wages over the next 10 years. Equally important is an emphasis on the promotion of talented Black employees within existing companies. The case is set in late 2020, just after the hire of OneTen's first CEO, Maurice Jones; it explores how the organization was established, structured, and staffed, and how it has so far built its partnerships.Giving Birth to Ovia Health
Par Jeffrey J. Bussgang, Julia Kelley. 2018
In late 2016, Paris Wallace, the CEO of Ovia Health, and the rest of the company's co-founders faced a difficult…
decision about the best way to grow Ovia Health's revenue. Founded in 2012, Ovia Health specialized in mobile and web applications in the women's health space. After building a strong user base with its original app, Ovia Fertility (which helped women conceive by tracking ovulation and other factors), the young company launched a second app, Ovia Pregnancy (which helped women have a healthy pregnancy by tracking various health metrics). Ovia Health's apps were free to use, and most of the company's revenue came from charging advertisers to host ads on its native advertising platform. Wallace believed that the family benefits market was a promising growth area, but he was not sure of the best way to enter the market. Recently, a top health benefits provider had offered Ovia Health a multi-million-dollar contract, but Wallace wondered whether Ovia Health could create a better family benefits solution by turning down the contract and selling directly to employers' HR departments. Participants will need to examine how Ovia Health evolved its strategy over time and decide which growth opportunity was the better choice.Classtivity: Payal's Pirouette

a Saturday in April 2013 to take stock. With one successful pivot under their belt, Classtivity is finally generating revenue and enthusiasm among customers. But cofounder and CEO Payal Kadakia has some doubts. There are signs that customers love the offering, but studios are less enthusiastic. Efforts to get customers to return to the studios after their monthly packs expire have largely failed. Kadakia must decide, preserve the product or pivot to a new business model?Governing PG&E
Par Lynn Sharp Paine, Will Hurwitz. 2020
The five commissioners of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) listened intently at a public forum in April 2019 as…
PG&E Corporation's out-going chairman Richard Kelly described the company's proposed new board. PG&E, which provided electricity and natural gas to millions of Californians, had once been recognized for its vision in foreseeing energy's potential to reshape the state and power its economy. But PG&E was now in the crosshairs of investors, regulators, and the public for something else entirely: its role in a series of deadly and destructive wildfires that had ravaged the region and precipitated PG&E's bankruptcy months earlier. Called "the first climate-change bankruptcy," it was the largest utility bankruptcy in U.S. history. The commissioners at the CPUC, PG&E's primary regulator, were particularly concerned about PG&E's governance and had convened the forum to solicit opinions from experts and the public and to hear for themselves what steps the company was taking to improve it. The Commissioners are considering whether to make specific recommendations regarding the board's composition and functioning, including how the board assesses and compensates PG&E's CEO. A principal issue is the use of non-financial metrics to evaluate and reward CEO performance.York Capital and Enovix
Par Jo Tango, Alys Ferragamo, William Vrattos. 2022
In June 2020, Jeremy Blank prepared for a meeting with his fellow partners at York Capital to discuss an investment…
he had championed in Enovix, a company developing a state-of-the-art, silicon-based battery. Early-stage technology companies, like Enovix, were not typical investments for York, but Blank had convinced his partners to invest. However, the partnership wanted to be "one and done" without reinvesting in future rounds. By 2020, Enovix had made great progress but not as quickly as forecasted. The company had set out to raise more money and received a term sheet from a well-known publicly-traded company. Blank saw this as an exciting opportunity for Enovix, but he was disappointed to see that it would require York to invest more capital and forego a key protective feature. How should Blank approach this meeting with his partners, and what should he recommend?Maestros del juego: 18 reglas para ganar la partida de los negocios

Par Michael Wolff. 2023
THE BOOK THAT BROUGHT DOWN RUPERT MURDOCH - AND A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERMeet the Murdochs and the disastrously dysfunctional…
family of Fox News. Until recently, they formed the most powerful media and political force in America. Now their empire is cracking up and crashing down. In his irresistible trilogy on the chaotic Trump presidency - Fire and Fury, Siege, and Landslide - the journalist Michael Wolff led readers deep into the twisted corridors of the White House. Drawing on years of unprecedented access to the Murdoch family and key players, he plunges us behind the scenes of another empire of influence, and the result is astonishing and unforgettable. Here is Rupert Murdoch, the ninety-two-year-old billionaire - concerned about his legacy, but more concerned about profits. Here are his contentious children, jockeying to take over when the old man is gone. Here is star anchor Tucker Carlson considering a run for the presidency while his bosses have other plans for him. Sean Hannity, the richest man in television, has his own plans: to put Trump back in office. While presenter Laura Ingraham is just trying to survive in a man's world. As the fallout from the 2020 election and the Dominion lawsuit pummels the reputation of the network, the battling Murdoch heirs position themselves for the final act in this riveting drama."Michael Wolff's books were my foundation and port of entry for working on Succession." Jeremy Strong ("Kendall Roy")Praise for Fire and Fury:#1 New York Times bestseller, a Book of the Year in the Guardian, Sunday Times, Observer, Financial Times'The pages of Wolff's book are littered with insults and intrigue, backstabbing and dysfunction' Washington Post'What makes the book significant is its sly, hilarious portrait of a hollow man, into the black hole of whose needy, greedy ego the whole world has virtually vanished' GuardianA City Cannot Be a Work of Art: Learning Economics and Social Theory From Jane Jacobs
Par Sanford Ikeda. 2024
This open access book connects Jane Jacobs's celebrated urban analysis to her ideas on economics and social theory. While Jacobs…
is a legend in the field of urbanism and famous for challenging and profoundly influencing urban planning and design, her theoretical contributions – although central to her criticisms of and proposals for public policy – are frequently overlooked even by her most enthusiastic admirers. This book argues that Jacobs’s insight that “a city cannot be a work of art” underlies both her ideas on planning and her understanding of economic development and social cooperation. It shows how the theory of the market process and Jacobs’s theory of urban processes are useful complements – an example of what economists and urbanists can learn from each other. This Jacobs-cum-market-process perspective offers new theoretical, historical, and policy analyses of cities, more realistic and coherent than standard accounts by either economists or urbanists. This open access book focuses on the ‘downstream’ element of PFM, that is how public organisations utilise public resources. It argues…
that improvements in PFM/IC will only flow from a recognition that what really matters is the quality of management. Management reform is an essential precondition to the successful implementation of many new techniques. Only when a managerial capacity exists willing to take advantage of the opportunities created by such technical developments, is it beneficial to pursue them. The benefits of PFM/IC flow from an improved quality of management.Despite enormous efforts, reform of public financial management and internal control (PFM/IC) in developing and transition economy countries has not been particularly successful in improving the quality of public service delivery and the use of public resources. This book outlines why this is and suggests a new approach. The analysis set out in this book is particularly relevant especially given limited national budgets and squeezed international aid budgets. These management changes include to the political/official relationships, to management structures, to budgetary and accounting arrangements and to the relationships between, particularly, the ministry of finance and other ministries. They require the delegation of operational management, developments in financial management and in accountability arrangements and a reconsideration of personnel policies, penalty and sanction arrangements. Managerial training for the civil service will be a key requirement. Reform may impact upon traditional cultural practices. These changes are all inter-related and should be coordinated.Contextualizing the COVID Pandemic in India: A Development Perspective (India Studies in Business and Economics)
Par Indrani Gupta, Mausumi Das. 2023
This book brings together contributions that explore various dimensions of the pandemic from a long-term development perspective. It also analyzes…
the existing policy responses and the gaps therein, to enable a greater understanding of how public policy – during a pandemic like COVID-19 – can be better aligned with the developmental challenges faced by individuals and households in India. Through its thirteen contributions, the book highlights the connection between the pandemic and development as deep and multilayered, and not unidirectional. It highlights how the existing inequalities and inequities in the system determined who gets impacted and to what extent, and how soon they can recover, if at all. It analyzes policies and programmes that have been implemented based mostly on the immediate pandemic crisis, and responded less to the pre-existing conditions that have shaped socio-economic outcomes. The book would be a great resource to study possible future responses to similar health disasters in a multi-cultural, multi-religion, multi-caste and multi-class melting pot like India.Computer Vision and Robotics: Proceedings of CVR 2023 (Algorithms for Intelligent Systems)
