Par Manuel Camassa. 2024
This book has two main objectives. The first is to identify and adequately describe the phenomenon of empathy. This essentially…
means offering a strong, reasoned and accurate description of the phenomenon of empathy in order to capture the essence of the empathic phenomenon and clearly distinguish it from other similar emotional phenomena such as sympathy or compassion The second part focuses on the role that this phenomenon can play on the ethical-moral level. The question is whether empathy is necessary or at least important for morality, and if so, to what extent, in what way and for what reasons. a young scholar, using his groundbreaking "overheating" approach. This book includes socio-anthropological and anthropo-sociological conversations between one of the world’s leading anthropologists, Thomas Hyland Eriksen, and a young scholar, using his groundbreaking "overheating" approach. From the pandemic to the spread of nationalism, from the Anthropocene to the Homogenocene, the authors discuss the most urgent issues of current society: e.g., the loss of biological and cultural diversity owing to the forces of globalisation; and the emergence of new forms of diversity through globalisation and migration; the intersectional dimension of climate change; the incredible rising of anger demonstrations around the world and resentful, overheated identities often linked to right-wing nationalism; the way digital devices have changed the meaning of temporality in people's life-worlds; the regulatory and competitive pressures on universities which are a result of many factors in the intersection of globalisation, massification and marketisation; youth's weakened belief in progress connected to changes in the contemporary world, such as growing inequality, political alienation and environmental destruction; recent pathbreaking research and original theory in sociology and anthropology related to the changes in an overheated world; and what post-Coronavirus social life might become. Highly topical, engaging and written in a conversational style, this book is a must-read for social scientists and discerning lay persons who want a fresh perspective on understanding the critical issues of our time. Par Ernest Jakaza, Esther Mavengano, Tobias Marevesa. 2023
This book, Multidisciplinary Knowledge Production and Research Methods in Sub-Saharan Africa: Language, Literature and Religion, contributes to the polemical conversations about existing architectures…
of knowledge and research practices in postcolonial sub-Saharan Africa. It creates an academic platform for multi-interdisciplinary research that brings to the fore inspiring efforts to break away from long-standing disciplinary bordering thinking and practices in modern-day sub-Saharan Africa. This distinctive edited collection is a valuable resource for scholars, researchers and students of multi-interdisciplinary research across the globe. The volume also promotes wide-ranging research focused on how to address complexities which hamper the promise of multi-interdisciplinary research in contemporary sub-Saharan African contexts. It provides thought-provoking perspectives on academic conversations about the uniqueness of embracing multidisciplinary research. The traditional methods of interpretation are challenged by the radical emerging demand to shift from a mono-disciplinary thinking to a cross-disciplinary epistemic endeavour in order to successfully address unfolding problematic realities that demand the pursuit of novel heuristic terrains.Psychology for High School

Par Robert Goss, Donald Boisvert. 2005
“Why did it take 30 years for American bishops to listen to the victims of Catholic clerical abuse?” Gay Catholic…
Priests and Clerical Sexual Misconduct: Breaking the Silence is a compelling indictment of Roman Catholic teachings on homosexuality and sexuality. Inspired by The Silence of Sodom: Homosexuality in Modern Catholicism, Mark Jordan’s controversial examination of homoeroticism in American Catholic culture, this groundbreaking book examines how the current crisis of clerical abuse affects and stigmatizes gay priests living in a climate of hysteria and condemnation. The book’s contributors, an eclectic mix of scholars and clerics, question whether the church can survive centuries of secrets and scandals. In the wake of very real concerns about a possible inquisition launched by the Catholic Church against its gay members, Gay Catholic Priests and Clerical Sexual Misconduct continues the efforts of the Gay Men’s Issues in Religion Group of the American Academy of Religion to honor the work of Mark Jordan, who contributes his thoughts on the issues raised by the book. A panel of former Jesuits, a former seminarian with the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament, a Dominican, a Franciscan, and several feminist authors present different perspectives on gay priests, clerical/ecclesial misogyny, games of power and abuse, and religious scapegoating, writing with eloquence and pain, a great deal of pride, and a touch of justifiable divine righteousness. Gay Catholic Priests and Clerical Sexual Misconduct includes:“Celibate Men, Ambivalent Saints, and Games of Desire”, “A Call to Liberation of Gay Catholic Clergy”, “Speaking Loud or Shutting Up: The Homosexual-type Problem”, “Those Troubling Gay Priests”, “Catholicism and a Crisis of Intimate Relations” and much more! Gay Catholic Priests and Clerical Sexual Misconduct: Breaking the Silence is an invaluable resource for academics, members of the clergy, seminarians, chaplains and counselors, and anyone interested in homosexuality and religion.Writing Business Research Reports: A Guide to Scientific Writing
Par Matthew J Rehart. 1993
A useful handbook, this text presents guidelines frequently followed by writers of reports of empirical research designed for publication in…
scientific business journals. The guidelines describe the types of information that should be included, how this information should be expressed, and where various types of information should be placed within a report. Excerpts from journal articles are used to illustrate most of the guidelines. At the end of each chapter, there are questions for classroom discussion."I can't do that until I've lost a bit of weight". "I need to slim down first". "When I'm thinner…
I'll..."What if you didn't feel held back by your body? This guide helps you to free yourself from harmful social attitudes about weight and to start living now.Break the Binds of Weight Stigma draws on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a positive, action-based form of therapy that works by accepting your natural emotions and using your own personal values to build a path to the life you want to live. Stories, worksheets, reflection questions, and guided exercises show you how to embrace yourself and fight back against the social structures that tie value to size. This is not a book about changing your body or losing weight. It's a guide to help you connect with the things that are important to you regardless of your weight. It's a step towards countering the harmful messages in society about our bodies. It's a movement. It's radical. It's freedom. The Will to Live: An Outline of Evolutionary Psychology (Psychology Revivals)

mind is regarded not merely as developing in association with nervous and cerebral development, but as being itself the most important factor in the process. It is this assumption which gives meaning to the title that has been chosen for the book. It brings themes like is psychology a science; impulse and growth; the rise of consciousness; the three main lines of instinct; the variability of habit; development of intelligence; thought as judgment and reflection; the critical faculty; simple and complex emotions; ideals and idealization; voluntary activity; sex and conflict; and buried complexes and dreams. Par Christopher Maymon, Gina Grimshaw, Ying Choon Wu. 2023
Virtual Reality (VR) is a rapidly maturing technology that offers new and unique solutions to otherwise intractable problems in the…
study of cognition, behavior and neuroscience. VR removes many of the constraints imposed by laboratory paradigms, allowing us to track cognitive, behavioral and brain responses to naturalistic (or even impossible) situations without sacrificing experimental control. But VR is not a tool that can be swiftly and effortlessly integrated into existing research pipelines; currently, the benefits of VR are accompanied by a host of methodological challenges and important practical considerations. To help navigate this new methodology, this volume provides a balanced review of both the exciting new findings emerging from VR labs and the challenges and limitations that are part and parcel of VR research. This volume is an important first step toward establishing a standardised methodology for conducting research in VR. To this end, the volume provides a wealth of practical advice for researchers who are new to the technology. This volume is authored by an interdisciplinary team of VR researchers including computer scientists, engineers, psychologists and neuroscientists. It highlights current research in the field to demonstrate how VR advances our understanding of the mind, while also providing groundbreaking solutions in applied domains.Beauvoir and Politics: A Toolkit
Par Liesbeth Schoonheim, Karen Vintges. 2024
Approaching Simone de Beauvoir’s feminism and social commentary as a resource to understand our current crises, Beauvoir and Politics: A…
Toolkit brings together established and emerging scholars to apply her insights to gender studies, political philosophy, decolonisation, intellectual history, age theory, and critical phenomenology. The essays in this collection start from key concepts in Beauvoir’s oeuvre and relate them to contemporary debates, asking how her notion of ambiguity speaks to lived experiences that have been highly politicized in recent years, such as pregnancy, old age, sexual violence, and the exposure of black and brown bodies to police violence; how myths inform our notions of collective, national identities, as well as notions of masculinity and femininity; and how she provides conceptual tools that help to theorize the various political strategies that are used to challenge gendered and racialized systems of oppression. These and other issues are central to this critical appraisal of Beauvoir’s legacy, demonstrating the contemporary relevance of her thought as it diagnoses the present and looks toward change for a better future. This book will be of great interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students looking to engage with the political content of Simone de Beauvoir’s work and the timely application of her ideas.Performance: The Ethics and the Politics of Conservation and Care, Volume I (Routledge Advances in Theatre & Performance Studies)
Par Hanna B. Hölling, Jules Pelta Feldman, Emilie Magnin. 2023
This book focuses on performance and performance-based artworks as seenthrough the lens of conservation, which has long been overlooked in…
the largertheoretical debates about whether and how performance remains. Unraveling the complexities involved in the conservation of performance,Performance: The Ethics and the Politics of Conservation and Care (vol. 1)brings this new understanding to bear in examining performance as an object ofstudy, experience, acquisition, and care. In so doing, it presents both theoreticalframeworks and functional paradigms for thinking about—and enacting—theconservation of performance. Further, while the conservation of performance isundertheorized, performance is nevertheless increasingly entering the artmarket and the museum, meaning that there is an urgent need for discourse onhow to care for these works long-term. In recent years, a few pioneering conservators, curators, and scholars have begun to create frameworks for the longtermcare of performance. This volume presents, explicates, and contextualizestheir work so that a larger discourse can commence. It will thus serve the needsof conservation students and professors, for whom literature on this subject issorely needed. This interdisciplinary book thus implements a novel rethinking of performancethat will challenge and revitalize its conception in many fields, such as art history, theater, performance studies, heritage studies, and anthropology.Resilience Enhancement in Social Work Practice: Anti-Oppressive Social Work Skills and Techniques
Par Nancy Greene, Roberta Greene, Connie Corley. 2023
As people around the globe experience more civil unrest and environmental disruption, the difficulties social workers face in their practice…
are becoming increasingly complex. This textbook deepens and expands the resilience-enhancing stress model (RESM) skill set and techniques so that social workers can more effectively serve clients and constituencies who are trying to overcome the stress of difficult life transitions and challenging environmental demands. It is designed as a companion piece to A Resilience-Enhancing Stress Model: A Social Work Multisystemic Practice Approach (Springer, 2022). The intent of the RESM is to further expand social workers' practice skill sets with additional concepts from the anti-oppressive practice (AOP) and coaching literature that aligns with the Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The book's 12 chapters are organized around life transitions and illustrate skills, techniques, and interviews important to the enhancement of resilience. Among the topics covered:The Resilience-Enhancing Stress Model: Articulating Anti-Oppressive PracticeExploring the Role of Cultural Diversity in Resilient Social Functioning: Theory and SkillsCountering Human Rights Violations During Life TransitionsFacilitating Community Development Following DisruptionResilience Enhancement in Social Work Practice: Anti-Oppressive Social Work Skills and Techniques uniquely offers practitioners a knowledge base to exponentiate their efficacy in identifying and fortifying resilience in a time in history when it appears to be imperative. It is written for a student social work audience at the generalist or advanced generalist level for practice across a range of populations and settings. It contains traditional and contemporary human behavior content that supports a social work narrative methodology and a life course perspective. It could be taught with its predecessor across one or two semesters. Practitioners in the field who are new to this content could also find the text a valuable resource.Black Women’s Liberation Movement Music argues that the Black Women’s Liberation Movement of the mid-to-late 1960s and 1970s was a…
unique combination of Black political feminism, Black literary feminism, and Black musical feminism, among other forms of Black feminism. This book critically explores the ways the soundtracks of the Black Women’s Liberation Movement often overlapped with those of other 1960s and 1970s social, political, and cultural movements, such as the Black Power Movement, Women’s Liberation Movement, and Sexual Revolution. The soul, funk, and disco music of the Black Women’s Liberation Movement era is simultaneously interpreted as universalist, feminist (in a general sense), and Black female-focused. This music’s incredible ability to be interpreted in so many different ways speaks to the importance and power of Black women’s music and the fact that it has multiple meanings for a multitude of people. Within the worlds of both Black Popular Movement Studies and Black Popular Music Studies there has been a long-standing tendency to almost exclusively associate Black women’s music of the mid-to-late 1960s and 1970s with the Black male-dominated Black Power Movement or the White female-dominated Women’s Liberation Movement. However, this book reveals that much of the soul, funk, and disco performed by Black women was most often the very popular music of a very unpopular and unsung movement: The Black Women’s Liberation Movement. Black Women’s Liberation Movement Music is an invaluable resource for students, teachers, and researchers of Popular Music Studies, American Studies, African American Studies, Critical Race Studies, Gender Studies, and Sexuality Studies.Feeling 'Blah'?: Why Anhedonia Has Left You Joyless and How to Recapture Life's Highs

Par Ketaki Chowkhani and Craig Wynne. 2024
This book examines, for perhaps the first time, singlehood at the intersections of race, media, language, culture, literature, space, health,…
and life satisfaction. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach, borrowing from sociology, literary studies, medical humanities, race studies, linguistics, demographic studies, and critical geography to understand singlehood in the world today. This collection of essays aims to establish the discipline of Singles Studies, finding new ways of examining it from various disciplinary and cultural perspectives. It begins with laying the field and then moves on to critically look at how race has shaped the way we understand singlehood in the West and how class, age, gender, privilege, and the media play a role in shaping singlehood. It argues for a need for increased interdisciplinarity within the field, for example, analyzing singlehood from the perspective of medical humanities. The volume also explores the role workplace, living arrangements, financial status, and gender play in single people’s life satisfaction. With an interdisciplinary and transnational approach, this interdisciplinary volume seeks to establish Singles Studies as a truly global discipline. This pathbreaking volume would be of interest to students and researchers of sociology, literature, linguistics, media studies, and psychology.
