Finite Volumes for Complex Applications X—Volume 1, Elliptic and Parabolic Problems: FVCA10, Strasbourg, France, October 30, 2023–November 03, 2023, Invited Contributions (Springer Proceedings in Mathematics & Statistics #432)
Par Jürgen Fuhrmann, Emmanuel Franck, Victor Michel-Dansac, Laurent Navoret. 2023
This volume comprises the first part of the proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Finite Volumes for Complex Applications,…
FVCA, held in Strasbourg, France, during October 30 to November 3, 2023.The Finite Volume method, and several of its variants, is a spatial discretization technique for partial differential equations based on the fundamental physical principle of conservation. Recent decades have brought significant success in the theoretical understanding of the method. Many finite volume methods are also built to preserve some properties of the continuous equations, including maximum principles, dissipativity, monotone decay of the free energy, asymptotic stability, or stationary solutions. Due to these properties, finite volume methods belong to the wider class of compatible discretization methods, which preserve qualitative properties of continuous problems at the discrete level. This structural approach to the discretization of partial differential equations becomes particularly important for multiphysics and multiscale applications. In recent years, the efficient implementation of these methods in numerical software packages, more specifically to be used in supercomputers, has drawn some attention. This volume contains all invited papers, as well as the contributed papers focusing on finite volume schemes for elliptic and parabolic problems. They include structure-preserving schemes, convergence proofs, and error estimates for problems governed by elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations. The second volume is focused on finite volume methods for hyperbolic and related problems, such as methods compatible with the low Mach number limit or able to exactly preserve steady solutions, the development and analysis of high order methods, or the discretization of kinetic equations.Simulation for Participatory Education: Virtual Exchange and Worldwide Collaboration (Springer Texts in Education)

phases and these elements are discussed by experts, most of whom have long tradition in the application of simulation. Simulation is treated with references to the specific needs of practitioners, educators and researchers in initiating and developing simulation in different fields of study, with specific reference to teacher education. This volume focuses on presenting simulation as a means to facilitating students’ openness to complexity and development of intercultural skills through virtual exchange. Thus, it provides educators and researchers with a conceptual and practical resource that tackles the critical role of cognitive and metacognitive complexity in the education of future global professionals through intercultural pedagogy. By tracing the roots of simulation and outlining a framework to support professional learning through experiential-based research, this textbook will prove invaluable for teacher trainers, practitioners and researchers interested in simulation.Rethinking Hybrid and Remote Work in Higher Education: Global Perspectives, Policies, and Practices after COVID-19
Par Krishna Bista, Roy Y. Chan, Xi Lin. 2023
This timely volume explores the current and future state of hybrid and remote work in higher education from national, regional,…
and global perspectives. Today, colleges and universities worldwide must ensure that they have adequate information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure, equipment, and systems to adapt to the “new normal” post-COVID-19. Hybrid and remote work can be a source of boosting productivity and advancing institutional change in higher education. Common within the management and leadership literature, hybrid and remote work is an understudied phenomenon in higher education administration. This book investigates the rapid rise of remote and hybrid work during and after the global pandemic and what it means for the future of higher education in the United States and abroad. By developing a comprehensive, research-based knowledge and framework this book seeks to equip and empower teacher-scholars and practitioners to operate safely, securely, and efficiently in a remote or hybrid environment.Tropical and Logarithmic Methods in Enumerative Geometry (Oberwolfach Seminars #52)
Par Renzo Cavalieri, Hannah Markwig, Dhruv Ranganathan. 2023
This book is based on the lectures given at the Oberwolfach Seminar held in Fall 2021. Logarithmic Gromov-Witten theory lies…
at the heart of modern approaches to mirror symmetry, but also opens up a number of new directions in enumerative geometry of a more classical flavour. Tropical geometry forms the calculus through which calculations in this subject are carried out. These notes cover the foundational aspects of this tropical calculus, geometric aspects of the degeneration formula for Gromov-Witten invariants, and the practical nuances of working with and enumerating tropical curves. Readers will get an assisted entry route to the subject, focusing on examples and explicit calculations.
This book develops a queer methodology to analyse a queer archive for the impact of normativity on subjecthood and the…
ways in which it shapes and curtails gender and sexuality. Chapters demonstrate how normativity functions to mask its own operation, is internalised by subjects, and is continually reproduced through discourse and in material ways. In seeking to make visible the functioning of normativity, the book performs a task of queering normativity by querying that which appears as natural in South Asian public culture. The book engages with both the consolidation and the unsettling of normativity through artefacts of South Asian public culture including canonical figures such as Rabindranath Tagore, literary and cinematic texts, Bollywood films, advertisements, social media posts, and ubiquitous ephemera in South Asia and beyond. Through these texts, the author unpacks the construct of canon, the nation, woman as a post-colonial subject, the home and the child, marriage, same-sex sexuality and identity. This book will be of interest to scholars and students studying and researching Queer Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, South Asian Studies, Cultural Studies, Literary Studies, Film Studies, and Media Studies.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to Writing Research: A Festschrift for Steve Graham (Literacy Studies #25)

Digital Literacy and Inclusion: Stories, Platforms, Communities

Par Deniz Çupi. 2023
This book investigates the role played by classical and digital media, and social networks in shaping debates on the environment.…
Providing a unique window of observation on environmental debates, the book explores the media theatre from the post-communist perspective of Albania. The work navigates the creation and development of environmental debate in Albania using evidence-based case studies, investigating the role of actors involved, who are closely related to the media, such as in business or politics. Environmental Debates in Albania offers an original insight on environmental debate, which is closely tied to and influenced by the place and culture within which it originates. Rich literature exists on global environmental issues, protests, policy and the rhetoric around climate change; this book supplies another piece to the puzzle through its focus on the under-researched area of environmental debate in post-communist and Eastern European countries.Ongoing Advancements in Philosophy of Mathematics Education

Ongoing Advancements in Philosophy of Mathematics Education approaches the philosophy of mathematics education in a forward movement, analyzing, reflecting, and proposing…
significant contemporary themes in the field of mathematics education. The theme that gives life to the book is philosophy of mathematics education understood as arising from the intertwining between philosophy of mathematics and philosophy of education which, through constant analytical and reflective work regarding teaching and learning practices in mathematics, is materialized in its own discipline, philosophy of mathematics education. This is the field of investigation of the chapters in the book. The chapters are written by an international cohort of authors, from a variety of countries, regions, and continents. Some of these authors work with philosophical and psychological foundations traditionally accepted by Western civilization. Others expose theoretical foundations based on a new vision and comprising innovative approaches to historical and present-day issues in educational philosophy. The final third of the book is devoted to these unique and innovative research stances towards important and change resistant societal topics such as racism, technology gaps, or the promotion of creativity in the field of mathematics education.Proceedings of the International Conference on Communication and Applied Technologies 2023 (Atlantis Highlights in Social Sciences, Education and Humanities #11)

Par Anastasiya A. Lipnevich, Jessica To, Kiat, Kelvin Tan Heng. 2024
Learners of all levels receive a plethora of feedback messages on a daily – or even hourly – basis. Teachers,…
coaches, parents, peers – all have suggestions and advice on how to improve or sustain a certain level of performance. This volume offers insights into the complexity of students’ engagement with feedback, the diversity of teachers’ feedback practices, and the influence of personal assessment beliefs in tension with prevailing contexts. It focuses on two main sections: what is students’ engagement with feedback? And what is the variety of teachers’ feedback practices? Under these themes, the content covers a broad range of key topics pertaining to instructional feedback, how it operates in a classroom and how students engage with feedback. Unarguably, feedback is a key element of successful instructional practices – however we also know that (a) learners often dread it and dismiss it and (b) the effectiveness of feedback varies depending on teacher’s and student’s characteristics, specific characteristic of feedback messages that learners receive, as well as a number of contextual variables. What this volume articulates are new ways for learners to engage with feedback beyond recipience and uptake. With nuanced insights for research and practice, this book will be most useful to teachers, university teacher educators, and researchers working to design and enact new ways of engaging with feedback in schools and beyond.Effective Use of Collective Peer Teaching in Teacher Education investigates the learning benefits of letting students assume leadership roles in…
the classroom, emphasizing both theoretical analysis and firsthand empirical research conducted with pre-service teachers. Building on Vygotsky's (1987) sociocultural theory of human learning and research on collective intelligence, this volume introduces peer teaching as a pedagogical practice with a significant and underexplored learning potential. The first part of this book focuses on findings from two separate teacher education programs, while the second analyzes the learning processes through three conceptualized learning positions: peer teacher learning, peer student learning, and collective peer learning. Investigating the balance and interaction of these processes, this book argues that teaching and learning cannot at length be separated from each other and discusses the practical implications of this idea. This book will appeal to researchers, faculty, and teacher educators with interests in theories of learning and international and comparative education. Its crucial insights into how learning can be maximized in the classroom will provide a nuanced picture of the complexity of learning processes.Ethics and the Good Soldier: Character in the Professional Domain (Character and Virtue Within the Professions)
Par Andrew Peterson, James Arthur, Scott Parsons. 2024
Building on extensive, internationally leading empirical research conducted by the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues, this book explores the…
soldier as a virtuous professional through a close examination of soldiers’ character and ethical reasoning. Starting from the view that virtues such as courage, honesty, loyalty and integrity are core to being a professional soldier, the book draws on insights from British soldiers at three stages of their career – officer cadets (at Sandhurst), junior lieutenants/captains (attending the Junior Officer Tactical Awareness Course), and senior captains (participating in the Captain’s Warfare Course). Drawing upon the Jubilee Centre’s Soldiers of Character study, the book explores soldiers’ character in the professional domain. Including clear implications for practice and research, this is essential reading for all those interested in the character of soldiers in both a professional and academic setting.Metapolitics, Algorithms and Violence argues that we need a more finegrained approach to understand contemporary far-right violence – an approach…
that takes language and cultural production in a digital economy seriously. This book underlines the importance of socio-political, economic, historical and technological context in understanding the rise of the new right. More concretely, based on a digital ethnographic approach, it argues that we should understand this violence and the contemporary rise of new far-right practices and actors in relation to the theoretical renewal of ‘La Nouvelle Droite’ in the 20th century; the ‘democratization’ of new right metapolitics in the 21st century as a result of the rise of digital media; and the development of a layered, transnational and polycentric new right cultural niche in which far-right activists and terrorists produce identity, discourse, digital cultures and practices. This work will be an engaging and necessary read for researchers interested in social media, digital culture, far-right politics, extremism and terrorism. The Critical Pedagogy Reader
