How Learning Works: A Playbook
Par Douglas Fisher, Nancy Frey, John T. Almarode. 2022
Translate the science of learning into strategies for maximum learning impact in your classroom. The content, skills, and understandings students…
need to learn today are as diverse, complex, and multidimensional as the students in our classrooms. How can educators best create the learning experiences students need to truly learn? How Learning Works: A Playbook unpacks the science of how students learn and translates that knowledge into promising principles or practices that can be implemented in the classroom or utilized by students on their own learning journey. Designed to help educators create learning experiences that better align with how learning works, each module in this playbook is grounded in research and features prompts, tools, practice exercises, and discussion strategies that help teachers to Describe what is meant by learning in the local context of your classroom, including identifying any barriers to learning. Adapt promising principles and practices to meet the specific needs of your students—particularly regarding motivation, attention, encoding, retrieval and practice, cognitive load and memory, productive struggle, and feedback. Translate research on learning into learning strategies that accelerate learning and build students’ capacity to take ownership of their own learning—such as summarizing, spaced practice, interleaved practice, elaborate interrogation, and transfer strategies. Generate and gather evidence of impact by engaging students in reciprocal teaching and effective feedback on learning. Rich with resources that support the process of parlaying scientific findings into classroom practice, this playbook offers all the moves teachers need to design learning experiences that work for all students!Rebound, Grades K-12: A Playbook for Rebuilding Agency, Accelerating Learning Recovery, and Rethinking Schools (Corwin Literacy)
Par Douglas Fisher, Nancy Frey, John Hattie, Dominique Smith. 2021
For more than a year now, we educators have been tested and tested again. We’ve been stretched, we’ve been pulled,…
we’ve been put through the wringer. But now it’s time to "rebound." It’s time to bounce back, come back better, and benefit from the many lessons learned to reignite engagement, accelerate learning, and move forward with fresh optimism and better systems for schooling. Enter Doug Fisher, Nancy Frey, Dominique Smith, and John Hattie, whose Distance Learning Playbooks have supported more than a half million educators across pandemic teaching and who are here now to advise you on this next, absolutely critical leg of our ongoing journey. Complete with tools and strategies, prompts and exercises, Rebound: A Playbook for Rebuilding Agency, Accelerating Learning Recovery, and Rethinking Schools will help you: Address the collective traumas we have experienced during the pandemic and rebuild our sense of agency and self, so that we can attribute student success to both teachers’ and students’ efforts Evaluate what we have learned about remote teaching and learning to determine what to carry forward and what to leave behind Shift the narrative from learning loss to "learning leaps" and implement instructional and assessment practices that ensure our students reclaim lost knowledge, build skills, develop agency, and accelerate gains Redefine classrooms, learning experiences, the ways schools operate, and the very idea of schooling itself "The greatest travesty that can arise for schools after 2020/21," Doug, Nancy, Dominique, and John write, "is to rush back to the old normal, and learn nothing, or little, about what worked well. That’s why this book has focused on rebounding, and taking the opportunity to create an even better schooling system, one that serves even more students, and focuses more on what matters most." "Let′s agree not to reduce the impact that our expectations have on students′ learning. What if we talk about learning leaps instead of learning loss? What if we identify where students are in their learning and identify critical content that they must learn now to accelerate their performance in the future? And what if we raise our expectations for students rather than lower them?" —Douglas Fisher, Nancy Frey, Dominique Smith, and John HattieRebound, Grades K-12: A Playbook for Rebuilding Agency, Accelerating Learning Recovery, and Rethinking Schools (Corwin Literacy)

Par Taras Mel'Nyk. 2023
Today, the theory of complex-valued functions finds widespread applications in various areas of mathematical research, as well as in electrical…
and mechanical engineering, aeronautics, and other disciplines. Complex analysis has become a basic course in mathematics, physics, and select engineering departments. This concise textbook provides a thorough introduction to the function theory of one complex variable. It presents the fundamental concepts with clarity and rigor, offering concise proofs that avoid lengthy and tedious arguments commonly found in mathematics textbooks. It goes beyond traditional texts by exploring less common topics, including the different approaches to constructing analytic functions, the conformal mapping criterion, integration of analytic functions along arbitrary curves, global analytic functions and their Riemann surfaces, the general inverse function theorem, the Lagrange–Bürmann formula, and Puiseux series.Drawing from several decades of teaching experience, this book is ideally suited for one or two semester courses in complex analysis. It also serves as a valuable companion for courses in topology, approximation theory, asymptotic analysis, and functional analysis. Abundant examples and exercises make it suitable for self-study as well.Proceedings of 2023 Chinese Intelligent Systems Conference: Volume II (Lecture Notes in Electrical Engineering #1090)

Par Rui Fernandes, Anastasiya Quimby, Sat Parmar. 2023
Head and neck patients who undergo treatment with free tissue transfer are patients with some of the most complex perioperative…
needs. Due to nature of the defects, reconstructive surgery is complex and often is the only available option offering an acceptable quality of life. Therefore, successful recovery of these patients is of paramount importance. Whilst the surgery itself is of utmost importance, insufficient or inappropriate pre-surgical work up and post-operative care may lead to reconstructive failures. Secondary reconstruction offers less optimal functional outcomes and may add to patient morbidity due to additional surgeries being required. This book serves as a comprehensive source of information related to the pre-, intra- and postoperative care of head and neck patients. It fills a critical need for a single source that addresses all aspects of perioperative management of head and neck patients. This book studies an overarching question of the challenges faced by Chinese lawmakers, Chinese listed companies, Chinese companies’ external advisers,…
and securities regulators in dealing with Chinese cross-border listed companies’ continuous disclosure in Australia, and how can these challenges be addressed. Chinese listed companies are struggling to meet the continuous disclosure requirements while listing in Australia and have even been depicted as having poor corporate governance and transparency. Many get delisted from the securities market in Australia subsequently due to non-compliance in continuous disclosure or are straight rejected from listing because of continuous disclosure compliance concerns. This book cuts in from this angle and delves deep into the overarching question through the following four sub-questions: What are the theories and policies behind the continuous disclosure regimes in Australia and China and how have they been differently implemented in the securities markets in these two countries? What are the deficiencies, at the intracompany level, contributing to Chinese cross-border listed companies’ non-compliant continuous disclosure in Australia? What are the limitations, from the perspective of external advisers’ efforts, contributing to Chinese cross-border listed companies’ non-compliant continuous disclosure in Australia? What are the difficulties, at the regulatory level, contributing to Chinese cross-border listed companies’ non-compliant continuous disclosure in Australia? In addressing these questions and putting forward corresponding reform proposals, this book takes not only legal but also historical, cultural, and political-economic factors into consideration.Introduction to Elastic Wave Propagation
Par Anthony Bedford, Douglas S. Drumheller. 2023
This revised and updated edition expands on its explanations of methods used to analyze waves in solid materials, such as…
the waves created by earthquakes and the ultrasonic waves used to detect flaws in materials and for medical diagnoses. In addition to the traditional methods used to analyze steady-state and transient waves in elastic materials, the book contains introductions to advanced areas that no other single text covers. These topics include the use of finite elements to solve wave problems, the Cagniard-de Hoop method, the four-pole technique for analyzing waves in layered media, and the growth and decay of shock and acceleration waves. The authors explain the theory of linear elasticity through the displacement equations of motion, methods used to analyze steady-state and transient waves in layered media, and include an appendix on functions of a complex variable. Originally developed for a graduate course for which no suitable text existed, the new edition retains its classroom-tested treatment of the theories of linear elasticity and complex variables for students needing background in those subjects.Rekonstruktive Kopf-Hals-Chirurgie

empowerment and community development. Based on extensive ethnographic field studies and comprehensive narrative interviews, it shows how the three First Nation communities presented in the case studies enforce recognition of their collective rights to preserve their cultural heritage and assert their right to political, economic, cultural, and social self-determination. It also considers the prevailing universalistic discourses around World Heritage and the various ways in which they serve to either reinforce existing oppressive conditions regarding Indigenous communities and voices or provide opportunities to overcome them. The book will be of interest to scholars and students working on social and cultural histories, histories of colonialism, and in heritage and museum studies.Tailored Light 2: Laser Applications (RWTHedition)

Par Myfan Jordan. 2023
This book explores two unique studies of women’s economic behaviour during Australia’s COVID-19 crisis. The first describes the care ‘frontline’…
in the feminised labor sectors of healthcare and education, identifying extreme workload pressures, deteriorating conditions, and a shockingly high incidence of workplace bullying: including women targeting other women workers. The author argues workplace cultures are almost inevitable in Australia’s advanced neoliberal economy, where a patri-colonial legacy continues to devalue and under-resource women’s work.In contrast, a second study of voluntary care provisioning taking place in ‘hyperlocal digital sharing networks’ over the same period identifies very different economic behaviours. Here, women – and occasionally men – instead engage in ‘care-full’ labors of gifting, collective provisioning, and hive mind problem-solving, that align with the gift economy models seen in degrowth theory. This book will interest scholars in gender studies, sociology, and economics, particularly those interested in care work, the gift economy, and women’s labor.Model-Driven Organizational and Business Agility: Third International Workshop, MOBA 2023, Zaragoza, Spain, June 12–13, 2023, Revised Selected Papers (Lecture Notes in Business Information Processing #488)

Par Mauro Carbone, Graziano Lingua. 2023
This book shows that screens don’t just distribute the visible and the invisible, but have always mediated our body's relationships…
with the physical and anthropological-cultural environment. By combining a series of historical-genealogical reconstructions going back to prehistoric times with the analysis of present and near-future technologies, the authors show that screens have always incorporated not only the hiding/showing functions but also the protecting/exposing ones, as the Covid-19 pandemic retaught us. The intertwining of these functions allows the authors to criticize the mainstream ideas of images as inseparable from screens, of words as opposed to images, and of what they call “Transparency 2.0” ideology, which currently dominates our socio-political life. Moreover, they show how wearable technologies don’t approximate us to a presumed disappearance of screens but seem to draw a circular pathway back to using our bodies as screens. This raises new relational, ethical, and political questions, which this book helps to illuminate.
