"'Malice' is self-explanatory, I trust," writes the acclaimed Elizabeth Peters in her introduction to this outstanding collection. "'Domestic' distinguishes the personal and private aspects of crime from the public and impersonal. Our murderers don't kill for the fun of it (serial killers) or for a misguided ideal (assassins and terrorists) or for pay (hired hit men). They only do in people they know and love (or hate)." Gathered in homage to the most beloved crimewriter of all, Dame Agatha Christie, MALICE DOMESTIC 1 presents today's best mystery writers at the top of their form.Pekan the Shadow
Par Rutherford Montgomery. 1970
PEKAN THE SHADOW is a wildlife story laid in the Rocky Mountains of the West. It is the story of…
a boy who believes that any wild creature, even a killer like the fisher, is entitled to live his life in the only way he knows, by hunting. How to keep his friend the fisher from raiding his father's trapline poses a problem for young fourteen-year-old Terry Carter. For Pekan regards the trap baits of fresh meat as a good source of food in the deep winters when all wildlife battles for survival. He not only springs empty traps and eats the bait, but will devour any trapped animal he finds as well. Pekan survives both the deadly set gun and the snares with which Terry's father Long Joe attempts to rid himself of his unwelcome trapline guest, and what Pekan learns provides Terry with a way of protecting his father's traps. Eventually a bond of friendship forms between Terry and Sheba, the pet cougar that he raised from a kitten, and Pekan the Shadow.OneTen: One Million Careers for Black Talent

(former CEO of American Express), Ken Frazier (former CEO of Merck), Charles Phillips (chair of Infor), Ginni Rometty (former CEO of IBM), and Kevin Sharer (former CEO and chair of Amgen). In May 2020, soon after the murder of George Floyd, this group came together to form a nonprofit that would partner with companies, talent developers, and Black talent, with the goal of hiring one million Black people in the U.S. into jobs with family-sustaining wages over the next 10 years. Equally important is an emphasis on the promotion of talented Black employees within existing companies. The case is set in late 2020, just after the hire of OneTen's first CEO, Maurice Jones; it explores how the organization was established, structured, and staffed, and how it has so far built its partnerships.Giving Birth to Ovia Health
Par Jeffrey J. Bussgang, Julia Kelley. 2018
In late 2016, Paris Wallace, the CEO of Ovia Health, and the rest of the company's co-founders faced a difficult…
decision about the best way to grow Ovia Health's revenue. Founded in 2012, Ovia Health specialized in mobile and web applications in the women's health space. After building a strong user base with its original app, Ovia Fertility (which helped women conceive by tracking ovulation and other factors), the young company launched a second app, Ovia Pregnancy (which helped women have a healthy pregnancy by tracking various health metrics). Ovia Health's apps were free to use, and most of the company's revenue came from charging advertisers to host ads on its native advertising platform. Wallace believed that the family benefits market was a promising growth area, but he was not sure of the best way to enter the market. Recently, a top health benefits provider had offered Ovia Health a multi-million-dollar contract, but Wallace wondered whether Ovia Health could create a better family benefits solution by turning down the contract and selling directly to employers' HR departments. Participants will need to examine how Ovia Health evolved its strategy over time and decide which growth opportunity was the better choice.Classtivity: Payal's Pirouette

Par Lynn Sharp Paine, Will Hurwitz. 2020
The five commissioners of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) listened intently at a public forum in April 2019 as…
PG&E Corporation's out-going chairman Richard Kelly described the company's proposed new board. PG&E, which provided electricity and natural gas to millions of Californians, had once been recognized for its vision in foreseeing energy's potential to reshape the state and power its economy. But PG&E was now in the crosshairs of investors, regulators, and the public for something else entirely: its role in a series of deadly and destructive wildfires that had ravaged the region and precipitated PG&E's bankruptcy months earlier. Called "the first climate-change bankruptcy," it was the largest utility bankruptcy in U.S. history. The commissioners at the CPUC, PG&E's primary regulator, were particularly concerned about PG&E's governance and had convened the forum to solicit opinions from experts and the public and to hear for themselves what steps the company was taking to improve it. The Commissioners are considering whether to make specific recommendations regarding the board's composition and functioning, including how the board assesses and compensates PG&E's CEO. A principal issue is the use of non-financial metrics to evaluate and reward CEO performance.York Capital and Enovix
Par Jo Tango, Alys Ferragamo, William Vrattos. 2022
In June 2020, Jeremy Blank prepared for a meeting with his fellow partners at York Capital to discuss an investment…
he had championed in Enovix, a company developing a state-of-the-art, silicon-based battery. Early-stage technology companies, like Enovix, were not typical investments for York, but Blank had convinced his partners to invest. However, the partnership wanted to be "one and done" without reinvesting in future rounds. By 2020, Enovix had made great progress but not as quickly as forecasted. The company had set out to raise more money and received a term sheet from a well-known publicly-traded company. Blank saw this as an exciting opportunity for Enovix, but he was disappointed to see that it would require York to invest more capital and forego a key protective feature. How should Blank approach this meeting with his partners, and what should he recommend?Goodbye California

Par Stephen Holt. 1951
Roy Bell, 17 years old, loves the family ranch in Alberta more than anything in the world. But when his…
father is hospitalized with a broken leg that just won't heal, it seems the Bell Ranch is finished. The cattle have been sold, and the family faces the dismal prospect of moving to the city to work in an uncle's laundry business. Roy can't bear the thought of leaving the wide-open range he loves. To save the ranch would be a challenge for any man. But Roy grimly steps up, vowing to keep the ranch going until his dad returns. He enlists the help of a kindly neighbor, one loyal ranch hand, and a young immigrant eager to exchange hard work for help with his English language skills. In a swiftly paced story, author Stephen Holt follows Roy's determined efforts to care for the cattle entrusted to him through a bitter winter. Throughout all of Roy's trials runs the happy thread of his growing relationship with a once-wild stallion, the free-spirited golden Palomino called the Whistler. Slowly, with patience, the two develop a mutual trust. When warm spring winds melt the snow, Roy believes the worst of the winter is behind him. But a sudden late spring blizzard causes a tragic stampede, with scores of the precious cattle lost over cliffs. How can Roy possibly save the ranch now? Holt's story deftly portrays the struggle to achieve against all odds. Ranch life and cattle raising are pictured in rich and vivid detail, and there is good characterization with credible events.Learn how to solve real-world data problems using machine learning and RPurchase of the print or Kindle book includes a…

risks, and opportunities of ESG policies, energy and environmental science, economics and philosophy, and sound public and private sector management. There is no intergenerational issue that is more pressing than the challenge of sustainability and climate change. It is a concern that will only worsen within any reader’s lifetime, especially if we fail to act. At the same time, there is growing concern among corporations arising from the Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) paradigm that includes climate risk, future profits, and stakeholder expectations. Many of our leading institutions also increasingly acknowledge a responsibility for corporate decisions since the onset of the Industrial Revolution that plays no small role in bringing us to the existential precipice of our day. This book provides necessary tools of sufficient sophistication to address complex intergenerational issues, such as global warming, economic justice and fairness, appropriate intergenerational planning, sustainable finance, corporate risk management, and governance. The book offers a vital resource for students, shareholders, sustainability practitioners, agencies, and advocates interested in climate action, intergenerational accountability, and economic sustainability.Climate Resilient Innovative Livelihoods in Indian Sundarban Delta: Scopes and Challenges
