Pandexicon: How the Language of the Pandemic Defined Our New Cultural Reality
Par Wayne Grady. 2023
Did you keep a list of the words coined by Covid? Wayne Grady did! They're deftly woven into a journal/timeline,…
taking us through two years of surrealism and limbo.—Margaret AtwoodThis exploration of the many new terms of the Covid-19 pandemic provides insight into the ways an ever-evolving vocabulary helped us cope with our anxiety and adapt to a new reality When the pandemic struck in early 2020, Wayne Grady started collecting the words and phrases that arose from our shared global experience. Some, such as "uptick" and "pivot," had existed before but now took on new meaning, and others, such as "covidivorce," "quarantini," "covexit," and "shecession," appeared for the first time, their meaning instantly clear. Through this new vocabulary, we became more able to adapt to change, to domesticate it in a sense, and to reduce our fears. Moving from the very beginning of the pandemic (the "Before Times") and our early response to it through the peaks and troughs of the various waves in countries throughout the world, and ending with a contemplation of what the "After Times" might look like, this book takes us on a journey through the pandemic and illuminates both how this new language has unfolded and how it has changed the way we think about ourselves and each other. The dreaming path: Indigenous ideas to help us change the world

and healing by learning to reconnect with your story—and ultimately the universe. Dr. Paul Callaghan belongs to the land of the Worimi people who live north of Sydney along the east coast of Australia. Raised to live the western way, Paul found himself mired in deep depression—struggling to find meaning while raising a family and working as a senior education executive. Desperate to break free of his restlessness, he made a drastic change: He "went bush" and connected with his elders to "walk Country" and learn Aboriginal traditions. Twenty years later, Paul is an expert healer and spiritual guide eager to share the wisdom of his ancestors and the insights he discovered on his life journey. In this affirming, empowering, and transformative book, he teaches you about the Dreaming Path—a connection to the earth and the universe, past, present, and future that has always been there, but can be difficult to find amid the chaos of the modern world. The Dreaming Path offers tips, practices, inspiration, and motivation that can enable you to achieve a profound state of mind, body, and spirit wellness, while encouraging you to think deeply about essential life topics, including: Caring for our place and the importance of story Relationships, sharing, and unity Love, gratitude, and humility Learning and living your truth Inspiration and resilience Being present and healing from the past Contentment Leading The Dreaming Path reminds us that we are our stories; by learning to recognize that we are all an indelible part of something much larger, we can begin to heal ourselves and our communitiesMieux vivre la ménopause: les hormones et l'alimentation à votre rescousse

Going into, Jarrett was worried: Wouldn't it be depressing, to be around kids facing such aserious struggle? Wouldn't it be grim? But instead of the shadow of death, Jarrett found something else at Camp Sunshine: the hope and determination that gets peoplethrough the most troubled of times. Not only was he subject to some of the usual rituals that come with being a camp counselor(wilderness challenges, spooky campfire stories, an extremely stinky mascot costume), but he also got a chance to meet someextraordinary kids facing extraordinary circumstances. He learned about the captivity of illness, for sure . . . but he also learnedabout the freedom a safe space can bring. Now, in his follow-up to the National Book Award finalist Hey, Kiddo, Jarrett brings readers back to Camp Sunshine so we canmeet the campers and fellow counselors who changed the course of his lifeCoeurs: du premier au dernier battement

York Times bestselling author of the How Not to Die series When Dr. Michael Greger, founder of NutritionFacts.org, dove into the top peer-reviewed anti-aging medical research, he realized that diet could regulate every one of the most promising strategies for combating the effects of aging. We don't need Big Pharma to keep us feeling young—we already have the tools. In How Not to Age , the internationally renowned physician and nutritionist breaks down the science of aging and chronic illness and explains how to help avoid the diseases most commonly encountered in our journeys through life. Physicians have long treated aging as a malady, but getting older does not have to mean getting sicker. There are eleven pathways for aging in our bodies' cells and we can disrupt each of them. Processes like autophagy, the upcycling of unusable junk, can be boosted with spermidine, a compound found in tempeh, mushrooms, and wheat germ. Senescent "zombie" cells that spew inflammation and are linked to many age-related diseases may be cleared in part with quercetin-rich foods like onions, apples, and kale. And we can combat effects of aging without breaking the bank. Why spend a small fortune on vitamin C and nicotinamide facial serums when you can make your own for up to 2,000 times cheaper? Inspired by the dietary and lifestyle patterns of centenarians and residents of "blue zone" regions where people live the longest, Dr. Greger presents simple, accessible, and evidence-based methods to preserve the body functions that keep you feeling youthful, both physically and mentally. Brimming with expertise and actionable takeaways, How Not to Age lays out practical strategies for achieving ultimate longevityThe lost supper: Searching for the future of food in the flavors of the past
Par Taras Grescoe. 2023
The world can't sustain the way we eat today. Whether it's ultra-processed oils, factoryfarmed meat, or monoculture wheat, industrial agriculture…
has increasingly dire consequences for the vibrancy of our plates, health, and planet. While some look to high tech solutions, like lab-grown meat or transgenic produce, Taras Grescoe argues that the future of our food lies in the diversity of the past. In The Lost Supper, Grescoe searches for the fascinating flavors, many forgotten or on the verge of extinction, that tell the stories of civilizations: "Aztec caviar" from a vanishing lake in Mexico; garum, the secret umami ingredient of Ancient Roman cuisine; acorn-fed feral pigs on one of Georgia's barrier islands; and camas, a staple of Northwest Coast Indigenous Peoples. He chronicles a growing movement of archaeologists, farmers, and food producers who are unearthing and reviving the nourishing, delicious, and sustainable foods of the past—from Neolithic sourdough and farmhouse cheese to wild olives and long-thought extinct plants—along with chefs and enthusiasts who are bringing history alive in their own kitchens. A deep dive into the archaeology of taste and an impassioned manifesto for the future of food, The Lost Supper sets out a provocative case: in order to save ourselves, we need to think—and eat—much more like our ancestors didQue mangerons-nous demain?

-- 4e de couvQuinine and quarantine: Missouri medicine through the years (Missouri heritage readers series)
