Par Mauro Agnoletti, Antonio Santoro, Beatrice Fiore, Francesco Piras, Federica Romano, Alessandra Bazzurro. 2023
Agriculture is often considered as one of the main threats to ecosystems. Unsustainable farming practices often result in habitat loss,…
inefficient use of water, soil degradation, pollution, genetic erosion, among other negative impacts on human life, including hunger, low food quality, reduced access to food resources, as well as the abandonment of rural areas. Nevertheless, when agriculture is practiced in a sustainable way, it can contribute to the preservation of many habitats, to the protection of watersheds, to the preservation and improvement of soil health. The use of sustainable and ecological practices is the key feature distinguishing traditional agriculture from intensive one. It may not provide very high yields, but ensures sustainable harvests over time, thanks to time-tested technologies and traditional know-hows and also represent examples of adaptation to harsh environmental conditions. Based on this approach, in 2002, FAO launched the concept of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) Programme, to identify and safeguard agricultural systems that are ensuring food and livelihood security, while maintaining magnificent landscapes, agricultural biodiversity, traditional knowledge, cultural and social values. This book presents 18 examples of these traditional agriculture systems around the world, with a special focus on Europe, Asia, Africa, Central and South America, as a result of the “GIAHS Building Capacity” project co-funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and carried out by the Department of Agriculture, Food, Environment and Forestry (DAGRI) of the University of Florence (Italy).First published in 1965, The English Militia in the Eighteenth Century directs light on English politics and government, through studying…
the militia, from the Restoration to the days of the younger Pritt. The militia occupied a significant place both in the quarrels between king and parliament in the later seventeenth century and in the struggle for power between the elder Pitt and the Duke of Newcastle. Raised and officered by the county and parish authorities, its maintenance constantly posed the problem of how to harness the machinery of local government to national purposes. The gentry had to be induced to help and the militia, like other institutions national and local, was shaped by the fashion and extent to which they responded. The book will be of interest to students of history, political science, and literature.Psychology of Emotion: 2nd Edition
Par Paula M. Niedenthal, François Ric. 2017
Since the turn of the twenty-first century, the psychology of emotion has grown to become its own field of study. Because…
the study of emotion draws inspiration from areas of science outside of psychology, including neuroscience, psychiatry, biology, genetics, computer science, zoology, and behavioral economics, the field is now often called emotion science or affective science. A subfield of affective science is affective neuroscience, the study of the emotional brain. This revised second edition of Psychology of Emotion reviews both theory and methods in emotion science, discussing findings about the brain; the function, expression, and regulation of emotion; similarities and differences due to gender and culture; the relationship between emotion and cognition; and emotion processes in groups. Comprehensive in its scope yet eminently readable, Psychology of Emotion serves as an ideal introduction for undergraduate students to the scientific study of emotion. It features effective learning devices such as bolded key terms, developmental details boxes, learning links, tables, graphs, and illustrations. In addition, a robust companion website offers instructor resources.Postfeminism and Health: Critical Psychology and Media Perspectives (Critical Approaches to Health)
Par Martine Robson, Sarah Riley, Adrienne Evans. 2019
Winner of the 2021 BPS Book Award: Academic Text category, this groundbreaking book employs a transdisciplinary and poststructuralist methodology to…
develop the concept of ‘postfeminist healthism,’ a twenty-first-century understanding of women’s physical and mental health formed at the intersections of postfeminist sensibilities, neoliberal constructs of citizenship and the notion of health as an individual responsibility managed through consumption. Postfeminist healthism is used in this book to explore seven topics where postfeminist sensibility has the most impact on women’s health: self-help, weight, surgical technologies, sex, pregnancy, responsibilities for others’ health and pro-anorexia communities. The book explores the ways in which the desire to be normal and live a good life is tied to expectations of ‘normal-perfection’ circulated across interpersonal interactions, media representations and expert discourses. It diagnoses postfeminist healthism as unhealthy for both those women who participate in it and those whom it excludes and considers how more positive directions may emerge. By exploring the under-researched intersection of postfeminism and health studies, this book will be invaluable to researchers and students in psychology, gender and women’s studies, health research, media studies and sociology. This book is an interconnected history of the evolution of global health in the decades before 2019, told through the…
prism of six decisive moments in which individuals from the World Health Organization (WHO), philanthropic foundations, academia and bilateral agencies came together to shape the world. These critical junctures are accessed via the life and work of Norwegian immunologist Tore Godal, one of the most influential health physicians of all time. Godal’s career over the past 50 years offers a window into the profound events that have shaped the health and well-being of millions across the globe, including the first free donation of a drug for the treatment of river blindness; the entry of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation into the global health arena with a $750 million start-up grant for GAVI, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization; the 50% reduction in under-five mortality rates this century; the emergence of insecticide bed nets as the cornerstone of WHO malaria control; the rise of maternal and child health on the global political agenda; and the connection between Ebola and the creation of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) in 2017. Exploring the ways in which the trajectory of global health has interwoven with the rich life and legacy of Godal, this book is a crucial resource for any reader interested in global health.Current play therapy resources offer details on how to conduct play therapy, but are limited in addressing the challenges that…

relation to the physical world and to human beings, real and imagined, with reference to procedures training ‘space men’ to travel alone or in company, deprived of the assurances of sight, sound, even weight. It discusses methods of publicity and advertising, of overtly or covertly influencing motives, subception or subliminal persuasion and techniques of ‘thought reform’ often vaguely termed character training, and, more confusingly, ‘brain-washing’. Other topical subjects are conflicting loyalties, with special reference to the moral problems of scientists; the social significance in different countries of intellectuals and anti-intellectuals; the effects of mass culture upon the individual’s beliefs, tastes and opinions; the role of the Organization Man in Britain; the concepts of ‘face’ and ‘prestige’ in groups and nations; and conflicting ideas of progress maintained by contemporary thinkers in ‘two cultures’. This book will be of interest to students of philosophy and psychology. The Forge: The History of Goldsmiths' College, 1905-1955 (Routledge Revivals)

underlying causes of the failure of this quest, a failure which enabled literary pirates on both sides of the Atlantic to continue operations for another forty years. It traces the effects this had on the writers and producers of books as well as their reading public. Few aspects of Anglo-American relations were untouched by the drama presented in this study. Its broader implications range from straightforward business transactions, official diplomatic manoeuvres, endless legal complexities, and clandestine political intrigue to the peculiarities involved in book smuggling, newspaper rivalries and industrial espionage. The book will be of interest to students of legal history, publishing and literature.Human Documents of the Lloyd George Era (Routledge Revivals)
Par E. Royston Pike. 1972
First published in 1972, Human Documents of the Lloyd George Era presents the years when Lloyd George was in his…
prime, and his career in peace and war may be seen as the frame in which the ‘documents’ find their proper place; but the book’s real subject is not Lloyd George, it is the People, with whom he identified himself and spent his long life trying to serve. For the purpose of this book Lloyd George Era is taken as the period from 1905. The early documents enable us to reconstruct a vivid picture of life as it was lived ‘before the war’ by such people as London artisans, Middlesbrough ironworkers, Lancashire factory hands, Northumbrian pit-folk and farm labourers, while extracts from reports of the first ‘Lady Factory Inspectors’ and of the great Royal Commission on the Poor Law highlight the grim situation of the ‘Pauper Host’. With the outbreak of war, the mood changes, as Lloyd George leads the People in a massive war effort on the home front, producing munitions and trying to maintain normal industrial output. A glimpse is given of the various contributions made by women. Out of a vast mass of tiny details a picture emerges of an essentially peace- loving people joining forces to achieve what Lloyd George called ‘the bloodstained stagger’ to victory. This is an essential read for students of British history. An Introduction to Medieval History (Routledge Revivals)

Par T. H. Pear. 1957
First published in 1957, Personality. Appearance and Speech is an intensive analysis of personality reflected by appearance and speech. It…
is a most fascinating study of the innumerable outward signs by which the man in the street judges personality. The author considers the effects this has on daily life; for example, can a person’s real character be assessed by a short interview in which personality, counting for so much, can be altered deliberately to no little extent? He describes many investigations which have attempted to discover experimentally the nature and accuracy of personality and character assessments, and includes personality sketches of F. D. Roosevelt, W. E. Gladstone, and of other prominent figures. He discusses the social results of the microphone and the effect on good and bad taste, of opinions widely expressed by listeners and viewers. The nature and function of the intellectuals who have increasing opportunities of affecting appearance and speech, are examined from the psychologist’s standpoint. This book will be of interest to students of psychology, sociology and social behaviour.Britain and the Armenian Question: 1915-1923 (Routledge Revivals)
Par Akaby Nassibian. 1984
First published in 1984 Britain and the Armenian Question examines the direction, changes, and ramifications of British policy towards Armenia…
during 1915 to 1923. The author has made extensive use of parliamentary papers and those of the Cabinet, Foreign Office, War Office and India office as well as documents produced by pro- Armenian groups during the period. This material is used to build up a detailed and incontrovertible study of British policy, which shows the extent to which it was governed by self-interest even when support for Armenia was its most altruistic. Once Britain secured predominance in the Persian Gulf, she lost all her interest in Armenian territory and the dilemma was posed when the war ended: not only did she no longer need Armenia but also had to decide who to support in Russia. Armenia lost out on all sides and was compelled eventually to adapt herself to the policies of the surrounding countries. This is an interesting read for scholars and researchers of international relations and international political history.Arts-Based Research Across Textual Media in Education: Expanding Visual Epistemology - Volume 1

including film and comics-related material, from a variety of geographic locations and across a range of subdisciplines within the field of education. This first volume takes a textual focus, capturing process, poetic, and dramaturgical approaches. The authors aim to highlight some of the approaches that are not always centered in arts-based research. The contributors represent a variety of arts-based practices and methods, and they weave this marrying of artistic and scientific expertise and experience into the fabric of the chapters themselves. Authors from international contexts speak to the importance of utilizing artistic approaches for research processes. From multimodal field notes to poetic forms to the dramaturgical, chapters in this book represent steps forward in educational inquiry to bringing together both the creative and credible. The book includes multiple images and rich descriptions shared from the field. This first volume covers amongst other topics: co-created narratives, creative fiction in research, analytic portraits, dramatic representation, and critical poetic inquiry. It would be suitable for graduate students and scholars interested in qualitative inquiry and arts-based methods, in education and the social sciences.Bipolar for Psychotherapists and Their Clients
Par C. Raymond Lake. 2023
This unique book is needed because it aims to improve the care of Bipolar clients while strengthening the clinical practices…
of non-MD psychotherapists. What is different is the proposal that psychotherapists manage the overall care of Bipolar clients. The increased number of publications about Bipolar over the past decades has enhanced the recognition of Bipolar. As many as 16 million individuals in the US may have a Bipolar episode at some point.Psychiatrists have traditionally managed Bipolar clients but there are not enough psychiatrists and they generally spend only 10 to 15 minutes every one to six months with their clients—often not enough time to recognize oncoming Bipolar episodes. Therapeutic strategy has changed from treating acute episodes to postponing next episodes. Psychotherapists see their clients for 50 minutes every week and are in a better position to recognize developing episodes. Psychotherapists do not prescribe and medicines are usually needed along with psychotherapy for best results. This book encourages psychotherapists to vet and collaborate with prescribers in caring for the therapists’ Bipolar clients.Lacking in the psychotherapists’ armamentarium for treating Bipolar clients is education regarding diagnostic signs, symptoms, and treatment including the most productive medications. This book provides therapists and clients the needed information and encourages academic departments and other psychotherapy programs to institute training about Bipolar Disorders.Gold Dust: The California Gold Rush and the Forty-Niners (Routledge Revivals)

Par Albert Perris. 2023
A fascinating history of an ancient place. From its first mention in legend in the Book of Invasions, through early…
Christian monastic settlements, castles and grand residences, Fenian raids and the Battle of Tallaght, there has been huge change in Tallaght. In more recent times it has seen car and motorcycle racing, an aerodrome, the rise and fall of a chocolate factory and a pioneering telecommunications firm. The massive population explosion and rapid modernisation towards the end of the twentieth century means this once-tiny village in Dublin’s foothills is now home to over 80,000 people. Richly illustrated with period photographs and original drawings by Michael O’Brien, Albert Perris tells the often-surprising story of Tallaght.
