The Power of One: How I Found the Strength to Tell the Truth and Why I Blew the Whistle on Facebook
Par Frances Haugen. 2023
The inside story of one woman’s quest to bring transparency and accountability to Big Tech, by the Facebook whistleblower who…
is determined to help us all retake control of our lives. In 2021, when news outlets feasted on “the Facebook Files,” Frances Haugen went public as the former employee who blew the whistle on the company by copying tens of thousands of pages of documents. She testified to Congress and spoke to the media. She was hailed at President Biden’s first State of the Union Address. She made sure everyone understood exactly what the documents revealed: Facebook knew it had accidentally changed its algorithm to reward extremism and refused to fix it; it knew that its customers were using the platform to foment violence, to spread falsehoods, to diminish the self-esteem of young women, and more. But how was it that Haugen was the only employee at the company who dared to step forward? The answer to that question is an inspiring tale of one young woman’s life and the choices she made. From an isolated childhood in Iowa to an unaccredited college, to one among the few women at Google in its heyday, Frances Haugen learned how to focus on what mattered, and to ignore her critics. To harness the strength of standing in the truth. The Power of One is equally inspiring—the story of a woman who went against the grain, again and again, and changed the world—and horrifying, as the culture and practices of Facebook are brought into the bright light of day, for the first time.Becoming Bionic and Other Ways Science Is Making Us Super

See It, Dream It, Do It: How 25 people just like you found their dream jobs

Par Jamil Ghojel. 2024
HEAT TRANSFER BASICS Concise introduction to heat transfer, with a focus on worked example problems to aid in reader comprehension…
and student learning Heat Transfer Basics covers the essential topics of heat transfer in a focused manner, starting with an introduction to heat transfer that explains its relationship to thermodynamics and fluid mechanics and continuing on to key topics such as free convection, boiling and condensation, radiation, heat exchangers, and more, for an accessible and reader-friendly yet comprehensive treatment of the subject. Each chapter features multiple worked out example problems, including derivations of key governing equations and comparisons of worked solutions with computer modeled results, which helps students become familiar with the types of problems they will encounter in the field. Throughout the book, figures and diagrams liberally illustrate the concepts discussed, and practice problems allow students to test their understanding of the content. The text is accompanied by an online instructor’s manual. Heat Transfer Basics includes information on: One-dimensional, steady-state conduction, covering the plane wall, the composite wall, solid and hollow cylinders and sphere, conduction with and without internal energy generation, and conduction with constant and temperature-dependent thermal conductivity Heat transfer from extended surfaces, fins of uniform and variable cross-sectional area, fin performance, and overall fin efficiency Transient conduction, covering general lumped capacitance solution method, one- and multi-dimensional transient conduction, and the finite-difference method for solving transient problems Free and forced convection, covering hydrodynamic and thermal considerations, the energy balance, and thermal analysis and convection correlations More advanced than introductory textbooks yet not as overwhelming as textbooks targeted at specialists, Heat Transfer Basics is ideal for students in introductory and advanced heat transfer courses who do not intend to specialize in heat transfer, and is a helpful reference for advanced students and practicing engineers.Durable authoritarian rule often rests on the co-optation of challengers. The conventional story is straightforward: rulers entice opposition groups to…
“sell out,” offering them benefits if they set aside their antiauthoritarian aspirations and become part of the system. However, co-optation does not always neutralize former adversaries, and even seemingly domesticated opponents can turn on their rulers. Co-optation does weaken opposition—but it is not as simple, reliable, or transactional as existing theories claim.Shouting in a Cage offers new ways to understand co-optation’s power and its limits by examining two co-opted parties, the Wafd Party in Egypt and the Istiqlal Party in Morocco. Sofia Fenner argues that co-optation is less a corrupt bargain than a discursive contest—a clash of competing interpretations. Co-opted parties conjure up imagined futures in which their short-term choices will lead to the realization of their long-term democratic goals. Meanwhile, other actors point to the disconnect between these parties’ antiauthoritarian aspirations and their participation in authoritarian systems. Fenner demonstrates that co-opted parties come to look hypocritical precisely because they refuse to give up their oppositional commitments. Their credibility sapped, they become unappealing allies and, eventually, political afterthoughts. However, such parties retain a surprising capacity for opposition, rooted in the literal and metaphorical idea of “party as family.” Based on extensive archival research and ethnographic fieldwork in North Africa, Shouting in a Cage broadens our understanding of political behavior under authoritarianism. The book presents the most relevant research of the participants of the VII International Conference of Young Scientists "Complex Investigation…
of the World Ocean" (CIWO-2023). This conference was held at Saint Petersburg State University in May 15-19, 2023 (Saint Petersburg, Russia). It covers a wide range of fundamental and applied marine and limnology studies combined in eight sections: Ocean Physics, Ocean Biology, Ocean Chemistry, Marine Geology, Marine Geophysics, Marine Ecology and Environmental Management, Physical and Biological interactions (interdisciplinary section), Oceanological Technology and Instrumentation. The aim of this book is to show the relevance of the marine research due to the crucial role of the World Ocean in determining climate change on Earth, huge resources (fish resources, oil, gas and ore deposits, etc.) and intensive development of infrastructure in coastal and offshore zones. All these topics were marked within the framework of realization of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). The studies presented in the book covers the wide spectrum of different the most important marine and limnology issues: thermohaline structure of water body and interactions between ocean and atmosphere, dynamic of the ocean, marine ice in polar regions, biodiversity of the marine ecosystems, adaptation of marine life to climate changes, geological and geophysical investigations in oil and gas regions, sedimentation, paleooceanology and biostratigraphy, hydrochemistry of estuary regions and carbon fluxes, microplastic pollution of the ocean, eutrophication and etc.Das Traditionsdenken im 20. This nostalgic and absorbing memoir tells the story of a real-life female police detective in post-war Britain, as she navigates…
a man's world. It's 1956, and the Berkshire Constabulary has never had a woman detective before. That is, until bright and ambitious WPC Gwen Crockford passes out of Hendon Detective Training School with flying colours...After five years serving as one of Britain's first policewomen, Gwen Crockford becomes one of its first female detectives. Swapping crime prevention for detection, she must soon become comfortable with attending murder scenes and post-mortems, investigating sex crimes and going undercover. Her police work is diverse and challenging: dealing with Teddy boy violence, arson, a paedophile 'war hero', and solving an unexplained death are all part of her remit.Gwen is sharp and quick to learn, considered 'one of the boys' by her colleagues, DS Kinch and DS Le Mercier. Until, that is, the traumatizing death of a child, the arrival of a new sexist DS, and near-zero opportunity for promotion force Gwen to reevaluate her career.Written and researched by Gwen's daughter Ruth from family papers, remembered stories from her mother and contemporary newspapers, this is a fascinating insight into late-1950s society and the challenges faced by female police officers. This is the second book in the Crockford series, following Calling WPC Crockford – Gwen's time as a pioneering uniform policewoman in the early 1950s.Quasi- und nichtlineare Kirchhoff-Netzwerke: Dimensionierung, Analyse und Synthese
