Par Teresa Lust. 2020
"Moving from the Piedmont region in northern Italy to the Maremma in southern Tuscany, and then to Le Marche along…
the Adriatic coast, Teresa Lust interweaves portraits of the people who served as her culinary guides with cultural and natural history, in this charming exploration of authentic Italian cuisine. We learn how to prepare bagna cauda-a robust dipping sauce of anchovies, garlic, and olive oil-with Lust's relatives outside Torino. We make hand-stretched grissini, Italy's iconic breadstick, and learn the secrets of zabaione, a classic dessert of egg yolks, sugar, and marsala whisked into an ethereal foam. In the Tuscan village of Manciano we discover the story of acquacotta, a rustic "stone" soup that nourished generations of the area's shepherds and cowhands. And in the town of Camerano, an eighty-year-old woman reveals the art of hand-rolling pasta with a three-foot rolling pin. Underpinning Lust's travels is her journey from chef to cook, mirroring the fact that Italians have been masters of home cooking for generations, and remain a vibrant source of inspiration. Today, more and more people are rediscovering the pleasures of cooking at home, and Lust's account-and wonderfully delicious recipes-will help readers bring an Italian sensibility to their home tables." -- Dust jacketSuffragette: the battle for equality

Par Amit Jain, Sanjay Misra, Chitresh Banerjee, Manju Kaushik. 2024
Software Engineering Approaches to Enable Digital Transformation Technologies features contributions reflecting ideas and research in enabling digital transformation technologies through…
software engineering. To date, multiple, different approaches have been adopted to develop software solutions for a variety of different problems. Of all the available approaches, the main approaches are level-oriented, data flow-oriented, data structure-oriented, and object-oriented design approaches. The other focus of the book is digital transformation, which can be defined as the adoption of digital technology to improve efficiency, value, and innovation Digitalization is more than just putting additional technological systems and services in place. Rather than improving conventional methods, a true digital transformation initiative includes radically rethinking company structures and procedures. There are four types of digital transformation: business process, business model, domain, and cultural and organizational. Companies are being challenged to develop new business models that consider and harness digitalization. From the standpoint of software engineering, digital transformation alters how software is built. Current trends include the development of mobile applications, cloud applications, and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Emerging trends are the development of digital twins, robotics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, augmented reality, and additive manufacturing. This book examines the challenges that arise due to digitization in society and presents plausible solutions that could be applied to counter these challenges and convert them into opportunities. These solutions may further be improvised and worked out for the software companies from the technological perspective, organizational perspective, and management perspective.Literary Trails: Haworth and the Brontës (Literary Trails Ser.)

His definitive book contains 1,600 separate entries for individual bridge sites or related groups of bridges covering more than 2,000 different structures, 165 general entries about different types of bridge and such topics as collapses and failures, and a summary of about 200 record-holding bridges in 50 different categories. Par Wendy Bracewell, Alex Drace-Francis. 2009
In writings about travel, the Balkans appear most often as a place travelled to. Western accounts of the Balkans revel…
in the different and the exotic, the violent and the primitive − traits that serve (according to many commentators) as a foil to self-congratulatory definitions of the West as modern, progressive and rational. However, the Balkans have also long been travelled from. The region’s writers have given accounts of their travels in the West and elsewhere, saying something in the process about themselves and their place in the world. The analyses presented here, ranging from those of 16th-century Greek humanists to 19th-century Romanian reformers to 20th-century writers, socialists and ‘men-of-the-world’, suggest that travellers from the region have also created their own identities through their encounters with Europe. Consequently, this book challenges assumptions of Western discursive hegemony, while at the same time exploring Balkan ‘Occidentalisms’.Developing Property Rights Theory: Based on China’s Practice

Par Deborah Yaffe. 2013
For anyone who has ever loved a Jane Austen novel, a warm and witty look at the passionate, thriving world…
of Austen fandomThey walk among us in their bonnets and Empire-waist gowns, clutching their souvenir tote bags and battered paperbacks: the Janeites, Jane Austen’s legion of devoted fans. Who are these obsessed admirers, whose passion has transformed Austen from classic novelist to pop-culture phenomenon? Deborah Yaffe, journalist and Janeite, sets out to answer this question, exploring the remarkable endurance of Austen’s stories, the unusual zeal that their author inspires, and the striking cross-section of lives she has touched. Along the way, Yaffe meets a Florida lawyer with a byzantine theory about hidden subtexts in the novels, a writer of Austen fan fiction who found her own Mr. Darcy while reimagining Pride and Prejudice, and a lit professor whose roller-derby nom de skate is Stone Cold Jane Austen. Yaffe goes where Janeites gather, joining a pilgrimage to historic sites in Britain, chatting online with fellow fans, and attending the annual ball of the Jane Austen Society of North America—in period costume. Part chronicle of a vibrant literary community, part memoir of a lifelong love, Among the Janeites is a funny, touching meditation on the nature of fandom.Murder In Matera: A True Story of Passion, Family, and Forgiveness in Southern Italy
Par Helene Stapinski. 2018
“A murder mystery, a model of investigative reporting, a celebration of the fierce bonds that hold families together through tragedies…Murder…
in Matera is a gem.”— San Francisco Chronicle"Tantalizing" — NPR“A thrilling detective story… Stapinski pursues the study of her family’s criminal genealogy with unexpected emotional results.” — Library JournalA writer goes deep into the heart of Italy to unravel a century-old family mystery in this spellbinding memoir that blends the suspenseful twists of Making a Murderer and the emotional insight of Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan Novels.Since childhood, Helene Stapinski heard lurid tales about her great-great-grandmother, Vita. In Southern Italy, she was a loose woman who had murdered someone. Immigrating to America with three children, she lost one along the way. Helene’s youthful obsession with Vita deepened as she grew up, eventually propelling the journalist to Italy, where, with her own children in tow, she pursued the story, determined to set the record straight.Finding answers would take Helene ten years and numerous trips to Basilicata, the rural "instep" of Italy’s boot—a mountainous land rife with criminals, superstitions, old-world customs, and desperate poverty. Though false leads sent her down blind alleys, Helene’s dogged search, aided by a few lucky—even miraculous—breaks and a group of colorful local characters, led her to the truth. Yes, the family tales she’d heard were true: There had been a murder in Helene’s family, a killing that roiled 1870s Italy. But the identities of the killer and victim weren’t who she thought they were. In revisiting events that happened more than a century before, Helene came to another stunning realization—she wasn’t who she thought she was, either.Weaving Helene’s own story of discovery with the tragic tale of Vita’s life, Murder in Matera is a literary whodunit and a moving tale of self-discovery that brings into focus a long ago tragedy in a little-known region remarkable for its stunning sunny beauty and dark buried secrets.A Journey In Ladakh: Encounters with Buddhism
