K.C. Li: The Tungsten King
Par Geoffrey G. Jones, Casey Verkamp. 2021
This case examines the business career of Kuo-Ching Li, who was born in China in 1892, and built a successful…
minerals trading business called Wah Chang in the United States during the interwar years. He acquired a prominent role in tungsten, the strongest natural metal on earth, and during World War II he played a major role in securing supplies of the strategic mineral from China and Latin America for the United States war effort. The case is set against the background of the era of the Chinese Exclusion Acts between 1882 and 1943 which largely curtailed Chinese immigration to the United States and denied ethnic Chinese citizenship. It explores how Li was able to build his brokerage business in such a setting on the basis of contacts in both China and the United States. It ends with the Communist Revolution in China in 1949 which appeared to threaten his dual identity.Individual FoodService, Kelso, and Ken Sweder
Par Jo Tango, Alys Ferragamo. 2022
When and how much risk to take? In October 2020, Ken Sweder, CEO of Individual FoodService ("IFS"), contemplated this question…
as he evaluated a proposal to acquire Brady Industries, a distributor of janitorial and sanitation products. Sweder and his private equity partners at Kelso & Company had been working hard to grow IFS, and now they had a unique opportunity to make a transformative acquisition. The deal had great potential and risks; it was unclear if this was the right time to make such a large, complex acquisition amid disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic. Sweder needed to decide if he should recommend the transaction and, if so, how to set the right value creation plan for the combined company.Wordle

the Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) initiative and have contributed to increase attention in practice, especially of large enterprises, resulting in different routes of action. This book provides a comprehensive overview of international business transactions at the customer interface with a focus on the specific role and tasks of the functions within a company. Three basic transactional models are introduced and analyzed, particularly to what extent they induce an international tax risk to the enterprise, in order to explore meaningful choices for action. The book inspires experienced practitioners as well as young professionals with or without formal business education to think beyond the context of their own experience and to define, implement and monitor tax-compliant transactional processes in their respective business. Individuals in companies are sensitized for compliance to these business processes resulting in a reduction of a hidden or frequently neglected, but significant tax risk. This book helps executives and managers create a shared understanding on international business transactions and facilitate detailed cross-functional discussions. This book combines the field of economics —especially monetary theory— with other disciplines like ecology, physics, humanities, social sciences and…
development theory. This transdisciplinary approach makes the book a unique contribution for researchers, students, policy makers and professionals working in governmental or nongovernmental institutions, as well as anyone interested in society’s well-being and achieving a true social-ecological transformation. It is written in an accessible language in order to reach a broad audience. In 2015, more than 190 world leaders recognized that the world is on a “collision course” (Max-Neef) and committed to 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Many conferences and high-level meetings have been held since then, and one of the most frequently discussed topics is how to finance these goals. There is a widespread belief that coming up with more money for sustainable development will “do the trick”. Usually, the discussions focus on finding additional financial resources in order to achieve the goals faster. In this book it is argued that not only is more money needed, but it needs to be a different kind of money. The book demonstrates that ALL but one of the SDGs are directly linked to our monetary system, which —being completely unnatural— can be seen as the most important, but at the same time least recognized, reason for market failure. Many people think we just need to do more, faster, better. Very few say that we have done things fundamentally wrong and that the institutions and values which motivated us to do those things need to be changed. It will be concluded that only if we change our unnatural design of money to a more natural one, will we be able to reach these goalsThe Routledge Handbook of the Economics of Ageing (Routledge International Handbooks)

Par Lance Cole. 2020
A history of the British automotive manufacturer and an analysis of what went wrong. What really happened at British Leyland (BL)?…
Was it ‘just’ the cars, or were other factors vital to the story? Who really was to blame for BL and MG Rover’s death? The ‘truth’ about BL is deeper than its cars – were ultra- Left-wing plots to topple BL and British society real? Did secret deals and political intrigue really exist? Was it Labour or Conservative powers who ‘killed’ BL, or was it BL itself? How was it that BL’s design genius was hobbled?Author Lance Cole lifts the bonnet on BL and presents a forensic yet easy to read new analysis in a story of BL, its cars, and the era of their motoring as powers on the political Left and Right waged war, sometimes even with themselves. Here is a book about cars and more, a conversation on all things BL: this is a new account of a classic British story told across a trail of evidence in a British industrial and political drama. Many mistakes made BL, but some of the cars were superb, the designs of genius, the engineering excellent; it is just that we have either forgotten, or been brainwashed into believing the worst. In a BL book like no other, written by a classic car fanatic with a background in industrial design, automotive, and wider journalism, this story lifts the lid on BL's cars and more. The author also adds inside knowledge from time working in the motor industry.Lance Cole tells the deeper BL story across the era of its greatest successes and its biggest failures.“An important and overdue book, well researched which will find a welcome place on the shelves of transport academics and motoring aficionados alike.” —The Journal of the Road Transport History Association“Cole’s engaging and informal writing style makes things very readable and helps us untangle a lot of the more complex shenanigans that went on. With fifty colour and fifty monochrome pictures, it’s well-illustrated too. Thoroughly recommended for its astute insight whether you’re a BL fan or not.” —Car MechanicsGreen Circular Economy: A New Paradigm for Sustainable Development (Circular Economy and Sustainability)
Par Pardeep Singh, Ravindra Pratap Singh, Anamika Yadav, Indranil Chowdhury. 2023
This book highlights the concepts, issues and policies related to the circular economy. The chapters of this book are designed…
to include the theoretical approach to the green circular economy, sustainable supply chain and challenges in the green circular economy. The book is a step towards designing sustainable circular economy embedded production and management practices. This book also addresses the capability of green-lean productions and a circular economy to improve resource efficiency and address environmental sustainability issues. Environmental sustainability is a hot topic in politics, science, and industry. There is a need to achieve economic, social, and environmental sustainability goals through adaptations of the green circular economy, which can help minimize greenhouse gas emissions, toxic pollutant releases, waste and energy and resource usage by employing renewable energy concepts and recyclable materials. The production processes must be resource-efficient and environmentally friendly, including green-lean manufacturing. Adopting a circular economy in manufacturing is less evident than green-lean management. However, systematic strategies to bridge this gap have yet to be devised. There is an urgent need to fully explore the Circular Economy concept to attain resource and environmental goals for the sustainability of the environment in the present era of global climate change. Its framework's powerful strategies need to solve the problem created by linear economic growth through industrialization and gross economic growth. There is a need to improve the sustainability management capabilities in the manufacturing and industrial sector to support the circular economy and a need to examine the impact of green human resource management. This book proposes the combined approach of green-lean solutions and a green circular economy. Through this book, we try to produce the content and information in a compiled form to give the audience an understanding of the circular economy concept framework and challenges. This book provides an overview of recent developments of complexity theory within the realm of social sciences. At a time…
when global and local social, political, cultural, and economic affairs are engulfed in chaos, this book sheds light on the mechanisms of uncertainties, offering new visions and frameworks for analyzing the nonlinear interactions between individuals, societies, and the environment. From exploring the foundational elements that shape our understanding of humanity, such as worldviews, justice, and trust, to applying complexity theory in the realms of politics, economics, management, strategies, and wars, this monograph provides a comprehensive examination of its far-reaching implications. By examining historical bifurcations and structural changes in American history and China's modern development, it emphasizes how complexity theory can serve as a bridge for intellectual and cultural communication between Western (Newtonian) and East Asian (yin-yang-based) civilizations. Moreover, the book elucidates that nonlinear phenomena, including bifurcations, catastrophes, structural changes, emergence of structures, and chaos, are integral aspects of human evolution. It unveils the positive potential within chaos, demonstrating that a comprehensive understanding of catastrophic mechanisms enables humanity to prevent global disasters by leading systems to chaotic attractors without destructive consequences. Through an exploration of the intricate interdependencies among individuals, societies, and the environment, this book offers a unique and comprehensive introduction to the application of complexity theory to the realm of humanity. The world and its business environments are in a state of constant change. The reality today is that organizations and…
their leaders are faced with increasingly daunting demands for change and, unless they build organizations that can keep pace with these fast-changing environments, it will be a challenge simply to survive while, at the same time, continuing to thrive and embrace uncertainty and disorder. One effective example of a world-renowned company that survived an existential crisis to become one of the most iconic companies in the world: The LEGO Group. In Building a Global Learning Organization (CRC Press, 2014), the authors showed how to develop and implement a global structure for learning based on the TWI (Training Within Industry) methods of good supervision. The goal was to create and sustain standardized work across multiple languages and cultural platforms to maintain the highest quality of the product as the company expanded internationally. In that book, you learn how the LEGO Group, as a multinational global company, worked on business transformation through changes in organizational learning systems, including new ways of working and other Lean transformational initiatives. Great organizations across the globe have used this text as a benchmark for global and national rollouts of TWI programs and standard work initiatives. Based on this rich experience of building a global learning organization, it became clear that basic structures needed to be put into place in order to effectively create and manage the change process. In this book, you get inspiration on how the LEGO Group met these challenges by developing and implementing a framework for transformations to create a common approach to designing, leading and anchoring change in an effective and impactful way. The author gives you insights into the journey which began by designing the LEGO Way of Change. She describes the process of testing the approach in a bigger transformation which, based on pilot learnings, was implemented in transformational initiatives. This book outlines some of the approaches that the LEGO Group implemented in order to ensure change would be both successfully implemented and sustained, including in-depth guides on impactful interventions with both leaders and people in the organization. The author discusses personalizing and navigating change as well as designing change in the organization and measuring its impact. You will continue learning more from specific real-life case studies from business leaders focused on different kinds of transformation, from reshaping functional teams to optimizing lead time through improved ways of working. When it comes down to it, change is about the people side of the equation. It is easy to change strategy, process, or technology, but it is harder to change individuals, people, and their behaviors. This book will provide inspiration and guidance on how to bring the people side of change into play in an effective and impactful way.Remote Patient Monitoring: A Computational Perspective in Healthcare (River Publishers Rapids Series in Biotechnology and Medical Research)

are guided through the components of such a system and shown how they could be integrated into a coherent framework for deployment in practice. The book ends with a discussion of case studies to provide practical examples and design methods for remote healthcare systems with different needs. This book contains information that will be helpful to undergraduate and postgraduate students, academic and professional researchers, and individuals who employ computational intelligence. By presenting new models of care and support, AI in medicine is having an impact on the entire value chain of clinical practice and the patient care delivery system. This is especially evident in telemedicine breakthroughs, where applications of AI are utilized to assist, complement, or create new forms of remote healthcare. Through the use of communications technology, telemedicine enables medical professionals to examine, diagnose, and treat patients remotely. Now, the technology might also integrate online diagnostics, etc., to increase the effectiveness of the healthcare system and enhance patient outcomes. By enabling elderly people to live independently, technological advancements in fields like remote patient monitoring (RPM) systems can revolutionize senior care. Medical diagnosis will improve, and remote patient monitoring will become simpler thanks to artificial intelligence. The resistance of many patients and doctors to using the telemedicine idea for medical visits will probably be overcome by AI automation.Medical-Grade Software Development: How to Build Medical-Device Products That Meet the Requirements of IEC 62304 and ISO 13485
Par Ilkka Juuso, Ilpo Pöyhönen. 2024
This book is a practical guide to meeting IEC 62304 software-development requirements within the context of an ISO 13485 quality…
management system (QMS). The book proves this can be done with a minimum amount of friction, overlap, and back-and-forth between development stages. It essentially shows you how you should shape your medical-software development processes to fit in with the QMS processes in the smartest and leanest way possible. By following the advice in this book, you can reuse processes from your QMS, ensure your product-realization processes meet the requirements for medical-software development, and marry all the requirements together using tried and tested solutions into one efficient system. The expertise of the authors here goes beyond just the experiences of one real-world project as they tap into over 30 years of experience and countless software and software-assessment projects to distill their advice. The book takes a hands-on approach by first teaching you the top 25 lessons to know before starting to develop a process for medical-software development. It then walks you through the expectations placed on the key aspects of such a process by the key standards. The book progresses from an overview of both standards and the general requirements involved to a detailed discussion of the expected stages from software development and maintenance to risk management, configuration management, and problem resolution. The book provides insightful advice on how the requirements of the IEC 62304 software-development life cycle can be married with an ISO 13485 QMS, how the development of the technical file should be organized, and how to address conformity assessment, the daily after-approval, and the recent trends that will affect the industry in the coming years. The book is modeled after the IEC 62304 standard and adopts its clause structure in the numbering of sections for easy reference. The book does not attempt to replicate either standard. For the ISO 13485 standard, it recites the necessary requirements succinctly. For IEC 62304, the discussion is in-depth and also addresses the impact of ISO 13485 on the requirements discussed. In this way, the book drills into both standards to expose the core of each requirement and shape these into a practical, cohesive workflow for developing, maintaining, and improving a Lean software development pipeline. This open access book considers the growing field of heritage tourism from community perspectives. It exposes an important paradox: despite…
all the dangers and negative consequences of these criminal networks, in many cases, they also provide marginalised and excluded communities with important private sources of protection, investment, and employment. This book reconstructs and compares socioeconomic contexts, criminal careers, and changes in farmgate prices of illicit coca and opium poppy crops in Afghanistan, Myanmar, Colombia, and Bolivia. It investigates the politics of strange bedfellows; informal bankers-without-suits providing cross-border financial services to the undocumented and the unbanked; the criminals without borders; and the mystery of illicit crop prices. The book challenges commonly held assumptions and casts new light on how relationships of conflict and accommodation are arranged and re-arranged in fluid, ever-changing contexts, producing often paradoxical outcomes. It then suggests policy reforms and alternative approaches to drug policy, development aid, and peacebuilding work. Researchers and students across development, peacebuilding, illicit economies, and conflict studies will find this book an important source of original research and analysis. It will also be useful for politicians, commentators and public officials considering what to do differently in tackling illicit drug economies.Mines and Miners of Cornwall and Devon: The Tin and Copper Industries

Par Douglas Boyd. 2020
A look at the royal women of twelfth-century England—from the empowered to the imprisoned—and their roles in the ruling dynasty.Eleanor…
of Aquitaine and her second husband, Henry II, are commonly considered medieval figures, but their era was really the violent transition from the Dark Ages, when countries’ borders were defined with fire and sword. Henry grabbed the English throne thanks largely to Eleanor’s dowry, because she owned one third of France. But their less famous daughters also lived extraordinary lives. If princes fought for their succession to crowns, the princesses were traded—usually by their mothers—to strangers to gain political power without the usual accompanying bloodshed. Years before what would today be marriageable age, royal girls were dispatched to countries whose speech was unknown to them, and there became the property of unknown men—their duty the bearing of sons to continue a dynasty and daughters who would be traded in their turn. Some became literal prisoners of their spouses; others outwitted would-be rapists and the Church to seize the reins of power when their husbands died. Eleanor’s daughters Marie and Alix were abandoned in Paris when she divorced Louis VII of France. By Henry II, she bore Matilda, Aliénor, and Joanna. Between them, these extraordinary women and their daughters knew the extremes of power and pain. Joanna was imprisoned by William II of Sicily and treated worse by her brutal second husband in Toulouse. Eleanor may have been libeled as a whore, but Aliénor’s descendants include two saints, Louis of France and Fernando of Spain. And then there were the illegitimate daughters, whose lives read like novels. This fascinating volume tells their stories.
