termed "lean production" that is spreading the globe. Characterized by knowledge work, lean production also includes the mass customization of commodities to consumer desires, and the close cooperation of firms within extended networks of production and distribution. Its proponents argue that it can unite companies, workers, and consumers in the harmonious pursuit of common interests, thereby making the Marxian perspective hopelessly outdated. However, this book is the first to defend Marxian political economy against the claims made by lean production advocates.Creativity in Large-Scale Contexts: Guiding Creative Engagement and Exploration
Par Jonathan S. Feinstein. 2023
A new model for smarter creativity Innovators and creators work in cultural, economic, and social contexts that shape their work.…
These contexts are large-scale, filled with overwhelming multitudes of elements and possibilities—but these contexts can be fruitfully "mined" by creative teams. Creativity in Large-Scale Contexts, by Yale professor Jonathan S. Feinstein, introduces a groundbreaking new "network model" to describe how successful innovation can be focused, generated, and accelerated. The book will help teams and organizations innovate smarter and faster. Feinstein argues that in large-scale contexts creativity happens most efficiently when it is actively "guided" by a creative leader or team. Guiding creativity involves understanding, navigating, and actively using the cultural context, identifying puzzles and opportunities, and spanning these tensions to create novel connections. With thoughtful guidance, creators and creative teams can find their way through the thicket of possibilities faster, smarter, and with less waste. Creativity in Large-Scale Contexts draws on case studies of famous creators including Virginia Woolf, Albert Einstein, Indigenous artist Clifford Possum, transgender activist and engineer Lynn Conway, and Twitter cofounder Jack Dorsey. Empirically grounded, this book will be essential for teaching and managing creativity and innovation and will open new avenues for future intellectual growth and practice in the field.Understanding the Great Recession: A Pluralist Approach to US Capitalism in the 21st Century

The Great Recession, including the preceding events and the subsequent recovery period, has been the dominant feature of US capitalism…
in the 21st century. But what can we learn about economic behavior, policies, and relationships by studying this period of marked general decline? Understanding the Great Recession seeks to answer this question by facilitating an advanced theoretical and practical understanding of the Great Recession, using multiple approaches to economic analysis. This textbook uses the Great Recession as a case study for understanding economic concepts, the conduct of policymaking, and competing schools of economic thought. It introduces readers to multiple perspectives on the crisis, including feminist, institutionalist, Marxian, monetarist, neoclassical, post-Keynesian, and stratification economics, amongst others. Divided into four parts, the textbook begins by introducing readers to the headline events of the crisis, and the major differences between neoclassical and heterodox economics. The second part investigates the lead-up to the crisis, beginning with the long-term restructuring of capitalism following the Great Depression, the housing market bubble, and the transmission of the 2008 financial crisis. The third part investigates the policy responses to the crisis, such as financial reform, monetary policy, and fiscal policy. In the final part, economic performance, the shift toward populism, and policy developments during the recovery are all analyzed. Providing the basis for understanding the long-term trajectory of capitalism today, this book is an invaluable resource for students of economics, public policy, and other related fields.Social impact communication is quickly become a mandatory skill for leaders of modern businesses and nonprofits, at all levels of…

funding of higher education institutions (HEIs). Various instruments have been proposed as a platform for the private sector to channel funding to HEIs. This book introduces readers to the issues surrounding the financing of HEIs, especially public universities, which are dependent on government budgets. It discusses the sources of funding for HEIs, focusing on philanthropic instruments through endowment and waqf funds. Since both forms of income are obtained via contributions from third parties, such as alumni, individuals, business corporations etc., it is essential that they are managed in such a way to ensure their sustainability and that their benefits can be accessed without interruption. It explains the theory of successful endowment and waqf at HEIs, namely appropriate investment planning, superior investment committees, highly skilled investment managers, alumni networks, diversity of income sources and effective fundraising. These elements have been studied empirically in this book through case studies of several selected Malaysian public universities. The book considers policy implications and offers recommendations of strategies that Universities can adopt, such as the appointment of fund managers. No specific guidelines currently exist for appointing fund managers to enable universities to invest in assets such as bonds, equities, and property. Therefore, the book encourages universities to grow the endowment and waqf funds through proper investment strategies executed by professional fund managers. The book contributes new knowledge to scholars, students and researchers, as well as informing university administrators how to collect, manage and invest funds from endowment and waqf.A History of Russian Economic Thought: Ninth through Eighteenth Centuries

Par Richard J. Gilbert. 2023
Regulatory Choices offers the first comprehensive economic history of energy policy and its consequences for California, where some of the…
most innovative and far-ranging programs of regulatory reform have originated. The authors of this volume have gathered together an impressive wealth of material about actual policy decisions and their repercussions and have subjected their findings to astute economic analysis. This book will serve for years to come as an invaluable reference on the costs and effects of various energy policies. With its focus on bringing prices in alignment with the true cost of producing power and delivering it to the customer, the first part of the book outlines the issue of setting utility rates and considers some of the proposals to provide regulated industries with incentives to respond to economic and environmental concerns. The problems of energy supply occupy the second part of the book, which includes a survey of the costs of alternative energy sources and estimates of their environmental impacts, as well as a case study of the construction of the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant. The book concludes by documenting the results of subsidy programs that were designed to target the development of wind power and residential energy conservation. Regulators, we learn, have a mixed record when it comes to managing the production of energy. Some conservation programs have enjoyed considerable economic success, particularly those that correct a lack of consumer information. Others, such as the renewable energy tax credits or programs designed to subsidize new technologies, have cost much more than the value of the energy they have saved. What emerges clearly from this study is that regulated industries are not immune from the forces of competition. Par Lee E. Preston, Norman R. Collins. 2023
Authors Collins and Preston, who have collaborated on earlier studies of industrial organization and marketing, are here concerned with the…
relationship between business concentration and profitability in American manufacturing industries. Economic theory states that prices are higher and price-cost margins wider under conditions of monopoly than under those of competition. the problem in applying this theoretical conclusion to empirical analysis and economic policy is that a gap exists between the theoretical concept of monopoly on the one hand and the measurement of concentration on the other. A number of earlier studies have analyzed samples of available data to relate measured concentration to profitability. the present study reviews these previous efforts and provides a common basis for comparison of them. It then analyzes statistical data for the year 1958 in order to obtain an extensive new collection of empirical results. This analysis focuses specifically on the inter-industry variability of price-cost margins, and seeks to explain this variability in terms of differences in concentration and other variables. and implementation of basic income. The first edition of this book contributed a comprehensive treatment of multiple aspects of the basic income debate. This updated, expanded edition tackles new topics that are becoming increasingly prominent in the global debate. New chapters are devoted to recent research on the history of basic income; the development and peacemaking potential of basic income in conflict zones; municipal experiments in the United States; requirements for pilot projects and experiments; and the public health implications of basic income. Existing chapters on the implementation of basic income have also been substantially updated to take account of new research on microsimulation, land value tax, local currencies, and blockchain technology and cryptocurrency, along with new material on the increasing use of opinion polls and the difficulties related to that. New political and ethical perspectives on the role of trade unions and their increasing engagement with the basic income debate are also introduced, while the section on pilot projects and experiments has been updated to cover recent political developments. Fully updated to reflect new global developments in the basic income debate, this handbook will be of interest to researchers, teachers and research-oriented policymakers in a range of fields.Maritime Decarbonization: Practical Tools, Case Studies and Decarbonization Enablers
Par Robert Ward, Wolfgang Lehmacher, Mikael Lind. 2023
This volume analyses maritime decarbonization from various perspectives. It contains unique approaches and tools in four areas: scenarios, value chains,…
enablers, and partnerships.Decarbonization has become a very important focus in the maritime industry. Anyone that delves into the topic quickly appreciates its breadth and complexity. Minimizing greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions in maritime practices at large and doing it swiftly is far from simple. The Paris 2015 climate goals and the IMO ambitions may be the industry’s guiding lights. But is this enough? Probably not. At the managerial level a paradigm shift is needed: from a fixed mindset that is calling for compensation to a growth mindset that seeks to capture the benefits of decarbonization. This will require a structured approach in the form of practical frameworks and clear recommendations. In this book 75 scholars and industry and subject matter experts have joined forces to explore different scenarios, value chain designs, decarbonization enablers, and partnership models to develop frameworks and recommendations around how to effectively work and make progress. The books offers a valuable mix of theory, practical tools, and real-life cases. The Economic Impact of Sports Facilities, Franchises, and Events: Contributions in Honor of Robert Baade (Sports Economics, Management and Policy #23)
Par Victor A. Matheson, Robert Baumann. 2023
This edited volume discusses the economic impact of sports facilities, franchises, and events on local economies. Written in honor of…
Robert Baade upon his retirement, the book provides a state-of-the-art of current research on the economic impact of sports, and recognizes the seminal contributions that Dr. Baade has made to this topic. The analysis of the economic impact of spectator sports is a vital public policy topic as $75 billion has been spent on stadium construction since 1990 in the US alone, with nearly $35 billion of this coming from taxpayer subsidies. True public cost of sports franchises is much higher than this as this figure excludes facilities outside the Big 5 domestic leagues (like NASCAR track, NCAA facilities, minor league baseball, and the Canadian Football Leagues), public subsidies for major events like the Super Bowl or Olympic Games, and excludes sports subsidies outside of direct stadium construction subsidies.Including contributions from many of the most notable researchers studying the economic impact of sports, topics include impacts of stadiums and franchises on local economies, labor markets, and tax collections, the effect of sports franchises on property values, and changes in the public and academic discourse on sports subsidies over time. This volume will be of interest to researchers and students of sports economics, management, public policy, and public finance.Proceedings of the 2022 Conference of The Computational Social Science Society of the Americas (Springer Proceedings in Complexity)

development theory. This transdisciplinary approach makes the book a unique contribution for researchers, students, policy makers and professionals working in governmental or nongovernmental institutions, as well as anyone interested in society’s well-being and achieving a true social-ecological transformation. It is written in an accessible language in order to reach a broad audience. In 2015, more than 190 world leaders recognized that the world is on a “collision course” (Max-Neef) and committed to 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Many conferences and high-level meetings have been held since then, and one of the most frequently discussed topics is how to finance these goals. There is a widespread belief that coming up with more money for sustainable development will “do the trick”. Usually, the discussions focus on finding additional financial resources in order to achieve the goals faster. In this book it is argued that not only is more money needed, but it needs to be a different kind of money. The book demonstrates that ALL but one of the SDGs are directly linked to our monetary system, which —being completely unnatural— can be seen as the most important, but at the same time least recognized, reason for market failure. Many people think we just need to do more, faster, better. Very few say that we have done things fundamentally wrong and that the institutions and values which motivated us to do those things need to be changed. It will be concluded that only if we change our unnatural design of money to a more natural one, will we be able to reach these goalsGreen Circular Economy: A New Paradigm for Sustainable Development (Circular Economy and Sustainability)
Par Pardeep Singh, Ravindra Pratap Singh, Anamika Yadav, Indranil Chowdhury. 2023
This book highlights the concepts, issues and policies related to the circular economy. The chapters of this book are designed…
to include the theoretical approach to the green circular economy, sustainable supply chain and challenges in the green circular economy. The book is a step towards designing sustainable circular economy embedded production and management practices. This book also addresses the capability of green-lean productions and a circular economy to improve resource efficiency and address environmental sustainability issues. Environmental sustainability is a hot topic in politics, science, and industry. There is a need to achieve economic, social, and environmental sustainability goals through adaptations of the green circular economy, which can help minimize greenhouse gas emissions, toxic pollutant releases, waste and energy and resource usage by employing renewable energy concepts and recyclable materials. The production processes must be resource-efficient and environmentally friendly, including green-lean manufacturing. Adopting a circular economy in manufacturing is less evident than green-lean management. However, systematic strategies to bridge this gap have yet to be devised. There is an urgent need to fully explore the Circular Economy concept to attain resource and environmental goals for the sustainability of the environment in the present era of global climate change. Its framework's powerful strategies need to solve the problem created by linear economic growth through industrialization and gross economic growth. There is a need to improve the sustainability management capabilities in the manufacturing and industrial sector to support the circular economy and a need to examine the impact of green human resource management. This book proposes the combined approach of green-lean solutions and a green circular economy. Through this book, we try to produce the content and information in a compiled form to give the audience an understanding of the circular economy concept framework and challenges. This book provides an overview of recent developments of complexity theory within the realm of social sciences. when global and local social, political, cultural, and economic affairs are engulfed in chaos, this book sheds light on the mechanisms of uncertainties, offering new visions and frameworks for analyzing the nonlinear interactions between individuals, societies, and the environment. From exploring the foundational elements that shape our understanding of humanity, such as worldviews, justice, and trust, to applying complexity theory in the realms of politics, economics, management, strategies, and wars, this monograph provides a comprehensive examination of its far-reaching implications. By examining historical bifurcations and structural changes in American history and China's modern development, it emphasizes how complexity theory can serve as a bridge for intellectual and cultural communication between Western (Newtonian) and East Asian (yin-yang-based) civilizations. Moreover, the book elucidates that nonlinear phenomena, including bifurcations, catastrophes, structural changes, emergence of structures, and chaos, are integral aspects of human evolution. It unveils the positive potential within chaos, demonstrating that a comprehensive understanding of catastrophic mechanisms enables humanity to prevent global disasters by leading systems to chaotic attractors without destructive consequences. Through an exploration of the intricate interdependencies among individuals, societies, and the environment, this book offers a unique and comprehensive introduction to the application of complexity theory to the realm of humanity.Party Life: Chinese Governance and the World Beyond Liberalism
Par Eric Li. 2023
The emergence of China as a great power is perhaps the most consequential development for the world in the 21st…
century. Yet, what the Western world sees in this development is largely through the prism of misinterpreted ideological dichotomy and misguided geopolitical rivalry. This book offers a deep look at the Chinese Communist Party and the nation it leads at conceptual, historic, and operational levels. If Thomas Kuhn’s concept of paradigm shift can be used in the social sciences, then China would represent the most significant anomaly to the dominant liberal exemplar. For students of China and of politics in general, and for the Western political and commercial elites, if they were to read one book about China to grasp the nature and weight of the Chinese phenomenon, Party Life would be it.China’s Road to Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality

interests, but in the context of Beijing’s recent efforts to develop a comprehensive and global foreign policy. China’s policy towards Oceania is part of a much larger outreach to the developing world, a major work in progress that involves similar initiatives in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. This groundbreaking study of China’s “soft power” initiatives in these countries offers, for the first time, the diverse perspectives of scholars and diplomats from Oceania, North American, China, and Japan. It explores such issues as regional competition for diplomatic and economic ties between Taiwan and China, the role of overseas Chinese in developing these relationships, and various analyses of the benefits and drawbacks of China’s growing presence in Oceania. In addition, the reader obtains a rare review of the Japanese response to China’s role in Oceania, presented by Japan’s leading scholar of the Pacific region.
