Par Riki Kurokawa. 2023
This book presents the latest cutting-edge research on phase separation. It discusses the benefits and risks of phase separation for…
living cells from the perspectives of physics, chemistry, biology, and medicine.Phase separation is a physico-chemical process that induces a single solution of solvent and intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) to separate into two phases, one phase containing only solvent and the other containing IDPs in the solvent. A key molecule in phase separation is the intrinsically disordered region (IDR) proteins (IDPs), mostly comprised of RNA-binding proteins (RBPs). One of the major roles of phase separation is to generate condensates, membrane-less organelles including stress granule, Cajal body, and nucleolus.Biological actions of phase separation in various aspects of science have received increasing attention in recent years. The book consists of four parts; Part I on physics and chemistry includes topics on structural biology of RBP FUS/TLS and chaperone for phase separation, computational approach of phase separation, and chemistry of G-quadruplex of DNA and RNA. Part II on molecular biology presents molecular mechanism of IDR sequence phase separation and potential cellular function of these labile fibers, formation of membrane-less organelles, and roles of noncoding RNAs in phase separation. Part III on biology covers topics from nuclear pore complex, developmental biology regarding force-dependent remodeling, and neurobiology and higher order brain functions. Finally, Part IV on medicine presents condensates and cancer therapy, pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases based on IDPs, and responses of microglia to amyloid. The last chapter highlights the latest topic on how the SARS-Cov-2 virus takes advantage of phase separation for its infections. This book brings together the studies of phase separation in each area in a single volume. The comprehensive approach provides new insights to the research and will benefit the readers by responding to the emerging needs for understanding phase separation.Health Promotion Ethics: A Framework for Social Justice
Par Louise Warwick-Booth, James Woodall, Ruth Cross. 2024
Health Promotion Ethics: A Framework for Social Justice critically considers the ethical dimensions of promoting health with individuals and communities,…
encouraging a nuanced understanding of health promotion in the context of fairness, empowerment and social justice. The concept of social justice, indeed, is central. The book explores how health promotion should be considered in relation to moral, social and legal issues, from individual responsibility to government intervention, as well as the possibility that existing practice maintains rather than alleviates existing health inequalities by stigmatising certain groups. It also questions the ‘rights’ of those who promote health to use particular strategies, for example using fear to encourage behaviour change. The ethics of health promotion practice and research are considered, introducing several important debates. Case studies, international material and opportunities to reflect on practice are used throughout to bring the important issues under discussion to life, engaging both students and practitioners alike. The book provides a fascinating route to reflect on what it really means to promote health for all in a more equitable way.Ethical Issues in Community and Patient Stakeholder–Engaged Health Research (Philosophy and Medicine #146)

Par David G Costa, Paul J Schulte. 2023
The textbook is designed to provide a "non-intimidating" entry to the field of mathematical biology. It is also useful for…
those wishing to teach an introductory course. Although there are many good mathematical biology texts available, most books are too advanced mathematically for most biology majors. Unlike undergraduate math majors, most biology major students possess a limited math background. Given that computational biology is a rapidly expanding field, more students should be encouraged to familiarize themselves with this powerful approach to understand complex biological phenomena. Ultimately, our goal with this undergraduate textbook is to provide an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of mathematical biology in a way that does not overly terrify an undergraduate biology major, thereby fostering a greater appreciation for the role of mathematics in biologyExploring End of Life Experience: Facing Death (Routledge Key Themes in Health and Society)
Par Helen Besemeres. 2024
The groundbreaking contribution made by this unique book draws on the experiences recorded by five people who are facing death –…
Jenny Diski, Philip Gould, Christopher Hitchens, Michael Mayne and Cory Taylor. Analysing the key themes that emerge from a psychodynamic perspective, the book describes how the memoirists respond to the first shock of receiving a terminal diagnosis, how they meet the challenge of continuing an active life when the illusion of an open-ended future has gone, and finally, how they struggle with accepting death as it overtakes them. The author argues that the ability to accept personal death is the key to resolving the paradox of our need to survive at all costs, while at the same time, however much we might deny it, we know that we must die. In a society where death and dying occur largely out of sight, this book provides information about what it is like to die – physically, psychologically and emotionally – and invites us to think about coming to terms with death. Exploring End of Life Experience is an important contribution to the interdisciplinary literature on death and dying, relevant to scholars and practitioners in medicine, nursing, psychology, and the wider medical humanities.Despite a long research tradition in visual neuroscience, the rehabilitation of cerebral visual deficits has, until recently, been neglected.
