Magill Family Egyptian Adventure
Par John Magill, Judith Ann Magill Cathcard. 2016
The Magill Family Egyptian Adventure tells the story of Canadian, Arthur Napier Magill, who lost his sight as a young…
man, as he and his young family embark on a years’ long adventure to Egypt, where he was seconded by the UN from his role at CNIB in 1953 to head a team of experts to establish a CNIB like demonstration school for the blind to serve that country and to provide training for others to replicate the school in neighbouring Arab states. Using newspaper articles, family photographs, letters home, and written project reports, readers gain insight into expatriate life and the enormous difference this UN mission made to the many blind people in the Middle East who would otherwise have been unable to live productive and independent lives. Arthur Napier Magill later became the second Managing Director of CNIB, succeeding Colonel E. A. Baker.Explains everything you never knew you wanted to know about the world we live in. Par Ephraim Nissan, Alberto Ferreiro. 2023
This book about receptions of Simon Magus uncovers further facets of one who was held to be the evil archetype…
of heretics. Ephraim Nissan and Alberto Ferreiro explore how Simon Magus has been represented in text, visual art, and music. Special attention is devoted to the late medieval Catalan painter Lluís Borrassà and the Italian librettist and musician Arrigo Boito. The tradition of Simon Magus’ demonic flight, ending in his crashing down, first appears in the patristic literature. The book situates that flight typologically across cultures. Fascinating observations emerge, as the discussion spans flight of the wicked in rabbinic texts, flight and death of King Lear’s father and a Soviet-era Buryat Buddhist monk, flight and doom of the fool in an early modern German broadsheet, and more. The book explains and moves beyond extant scholarly wisdom on how the polemic against Mani (the founder of Manichaeism) was tinged with hues of Simon Magus. The novelty of this book is that it shows that Simon Magus’ receptions teach us a great deal about the contexts in which this archetype was deployed.Tsūji, Interpreters in and Around Early Modern Japan (Translation History)
Par Mino Saito, Miki Sato. 2023
This book introduces English-speaking audiences to tsūji, who were interpreters in different contexts in Japan and then the Ryukyu Kingdom from…
the late 16th to the mid-19th century. It comprises seven historical case studies on tsūji in which contributors adopt a context-oriented approach. They aim to explore the function of these interpreters in communication with other cultures in different languages, including Japanese, Dutch, Chinese, Korean, Ryukyuan, English, Russian and Ainu. Each chapter elucidates the tsūji and the surrounding social, political and economic conditions. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of translation and interpreting, but also readers interested in the early modern history of interpreting and cultural exchange. It will similarly appeal to those interested in the Japanese language, but with limited access to books written in Japanese.A History of Western Society Since 1300: From The Age Of Exploration To The Present
