The social processes which underpin and shape our lives have the power to significantly transform the trajectories of people experiencing…
recovery from addiction and desistance from crime. Recovery from addiction and desistance from crime are processes which are often experienced and supported in the same physical spaces and are also frequently experienced by the same people. This book therefore synthesises and presents research on the social influences of recovery and desistance. This book presents the social component model of recovery from addiction and desistance from crime: a strength-based approach presenting case studies to better understand the social factors of both recovery from addiction and desistance from crime and therefore a step towards enhancing evidence-based policy and practice. The social components that have emerged and will be discussed within this book include relationships and social bonds; social identity, group membership, and social networks; and social capital. Compiled based on observations, interviews, and social identity mapping methods, this work combines and presents theory and research to enhance and strengthen the evidence available for people who are already teaching about, supporting, and experiencing both desistance from crime and recovery from addiction in practice.Introduction To Criminal Justice: A Brief Edition

Par Ross Homel, Kathryn Graham. 2008
This book provides a definitive review of knowledge about bar room environments and their regulation, and provides directions for the…
prevention of aggression, violence and injury in and around public drinking establishments. It shows why drinking establishments are high risk for aggression, why some establishments are riskier than others, the effectiveness of existing interventions and policies, and the importance of better regulatory models for achieving safer drinking establishments. The authors emphasise the need to understand the problem and to tackle it through evidence-based preventive strategies, providing a detailed review of the nature of problem behaviours within the specific context of public drinking establishments - while recognising that these establishments are businesses that operate in diverse communities and cultures. Special attention is paid to the difficulties in implementing and sustaining effective interventions within the kinds of regulatory structures and political and economic climates that currently prevail in western countries. The book draws upon the authors' extensive experience with observational, interview and intervention research related to reducing aggression and injury in drinking establishments, as well as their knowledge of the alcohol field, and of prevention, policing and regulation more generally.Correction: Parole, Prison, and the Possibility of Change
Par Ben Austen. 2023

groundbreaking and honest investigation into the crisis of the American criminal justice system–through the lens of parole. Perfect for fans of Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow and Bryan Stevenson’s Just Mercy“Correction ranks among the very best books on life inside and outside of prison I have ever read." ―Matthew Desmond, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Evicted “Correction provides a revelatory lens for examining mass incarceration." –The Washington Post A Most Anticipated Book of 2023: Chicago Review of Books, The Chicago Tribune, The Next Big Idea ClubThe United States, alone, locks up a quarter of the world’s incarcerated people. And yet apart from clichés—paying a debt to society; you do the crime, you do the time—there is little sense collectively in America what constitutes retribution or atonement. We don’t actually know why we punish.Ben Austen’s powerful exploration offers a behind-the-scenes look at the process of parole. Told through the portraits of two men imprisoned for murder, and the parole board that holds their freedom in the balance, Austen’s unflinching storytelling forces us to reckon with some of the most profound questions underlying the country’s values around crime and punishment. What must someone who commits a terrible act do to get a second chance? What does incarceration seek to accomplish? An illuminating work of narrative nonfiction, Correction challenges us to consider for ourselves why and who we punish–and how we might find a way out of an era of mass imprisonment.British Pakistanis and Desistance: Poverty, Prison and Identity (International Series on Desistance and Rehabilitation)
Par Colin Webster, Mohammed Qasim. 2024
Focusing on the lives of first and second generation British Pakistani young adult men and those approaching middle age, who…
offend or have offended, and the experiences of their fathers bringing them up in a de-industrialised city, this book examines the influence of social relations on their moves toward and away from crime, particularly the impact of father-son relationships. It seeks to understand their transitions as they aged; the meanings they place on their ethno-cultural, social and economic marginalization; and the licit and illicit opportunities and constraints that influence identity and social integration, and their place in British society. British Pakistanis and Desistance focuses on the distinct social, cultural and economic context and the relations in which their offending and desistance takes place, such as family formation, education, prison, neighbourhood change and long-term changes in the types, availability and quality of work. Sketching a ‘life-course’ approach, it locates desistance theory and its application within the relationship between biography and social structure, using a case study of entrepreneurial criminality as an attempt at recovery from de-industrialisation. An accessible and compelling read, this book will appeal to students and scholars of criminology, sociology, desistance, social policy and all those interested in the lived experience of British Pakistani men.Setting Relations Right in Restorative Practice: Broadening Mindsets and Skill Sets (Contemporary Issues in Restorative Practice)
Par David Moore, Alikki Vernon. 2024
Setting Relations Right in Restorative Practice is a practical guide to using restorative processes, both in justice systems, to provide…
a healing response to harm, and in broader community contexts, to help people co-exist peacefully. Restorative processes can help to establish, maintain, deepen, and repair relationships, and to neutralise the conflict associated with negative relationships. The result is less conflict within people, between people, and between groups, and increasing individual and community wellbeing. These complex goals can be distilled to the single principle of setting relations right. The authors distil lessons from their decades of work at the frontline of restorative innovation. They outline an accurate, accessible theory that informs a restorative mindset, and describe in detail the corresponding skill set. Succinct, engaging case studies include refinements to existing programs in justice systems. Other case studies include the innovations of restorative responses to institutional abuse and to family violence and sexual harm, initiatives to increase psychological safety in schools and workplaces, and programs that support restorative ways-of-working across whole cities or regions. By applying elements from successful programs, practitioners can realise the broader reforming potential of restorative practice. This book is essential reading for restorative practitioners, administrators, and policymakers, for students and researchers – indeed, for anyone interested in the power and potential of restorative practice and other forms of deliberative decision-making.

This book builds on the recent revival of interest in Marx and Marxism, calling for a renewal and refinement of…
Marxist state theory. It aims to provoke and encourage new debates and critiques that build on—but also update and extend—the rich tradition of Marxist analyses of the capitalist state, including the well-known debates of the 1970s. The chapters present a dynamic and diverse constellation of arguments and perspectives on a range of topics, from general re-appraisals of the capitalist state to investigations of contemporary challenges—including digitalisation, the ecological crisis, the coronavirus pandemic, social reproduction, and critical political economy. What they share is a commitment to an understanding of the specifically capitalist character of the modern state and its significance for any serious discussion of the causes of our current age of global catastrophe and the overcoming of capitalist social relations.American Jewish Year Book 2022: The Annual Record of the North American Jewish Communities Since 1899 (American Jewish Year Book #122)

early 21st century. Following a review of the reception of The Bell Curve and its place in the campaign to end affirmative action, Professor Tucker analyses Herrnstein’s concept of the “meritocracy” in relation to earlier 20th century eugenics and the dramatic increase in economic inequality over the past 30 years. Tucker demonstrates how, contrary to The Bell Curve’s predictions, the reallocation of these huge sums was neither rational nor beneficial for society. The book moves on to situate The Bell Curve within contemporary politics and shows how it can be seen to have played a role in the 2016 US election. This compelling analysis will appeal to scholars and those with an interest in the history of scientific racism, the history of psychology and the sociology of knowledge and science. This is an open access book.Der NSU: Eine gruppensoziologische Perspektive (Organisationsstudien)

Par Petter Gottschalk, Christopher Hamerton. 2024
This book makes a distinctive and innovative contribution to the study of white-collar and corporate crime through detailed examination of…
the use, affect, and violation of the corporate social license – a concept frequently extended to a license to operate. Whilst discrete aspects of corporate social responsibility have found their way into the discourse on business deviance and crime, no single book to date has provided a detailed exploration of social licence through a criminological lens. Here, using an interdisciplinary focus which includes illustrative case-studies and large-scale original fieldwork, Gottschalk and Hamerton explore European, North American, Asian, and global perspectives to identify, position, and reveal the impact of the social license on contemporary conceptions of white-collar and corporate deviance and crime. Corporate Social License: A Study in Legitimacy, Conformance, and Corruption will be of interest to scholars of criminology, law, business management, and sociology along with professionals within allied fields.Zemiology and Human Trafficking (Routledge Studies in Organised Crime)
Par Avi Boukli. 2018
Following the rise of the zemiological movement, the concept of social harm has attracted a great deal of scholarly attention.…
Using this perspective, a number of scholars have sought to remove the constraining brackets surrounding criminological investigation in order to broaden its legitimate parameters of study and incorporate a wider range of un-criminalized and hidden harms. This book expands the literature on social harm by applying the concept of zemia to human trafficking investigations in Europe, North America, and Africa. This book draws attention not only to various structurally imbedded harms, but also to the wider consequences of such harms. Drawing on a range of international legal cases on trafficking, this book offers a new direction in criminological and zemiological thinking and a reimagining of criminal justice responses to harm.Mobilities, Social Change and Crime: Lessons from Poland
Par Konrad Buczkowski, Paulina Wiktorska. 2024
This book presents a synthesis of selected trends in the dynamics and structure of crime in Poland over the past…
30 years, in the context of ongoing social transformations in the wider region. The book explores the impact of the deep systemic transformation of the late 1980s and early 1990s on the phenomenon of crime, its structure and dynamics, and the policy of its control in the following decades. It also examines the impact of changes resulting from the dynamic development of Polish society in the 21st century in the context of global changes towards the emergence of a new form of collective life, a mobile information society based on modern technologies. The focus is primarily on those deviant behaviours that can most obviously be linked to social changes, primarily political, economic, legal, and technological. The work examines disclosed crime figures available in official statistics. It also looks to the future considering the global societal changes caused by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on preliminary observations made in selected countries, the authors describe associated changes in criminal behaviour and identify some pivotal developments that may influence future trends. The book will be of interest to academics and researchers working in the areas of criminal law, criminology, sociology and criminal policy.Introduction to Policing Research: Taking Lessons from Practice

Par Anna Gjika. 2023
Stories of teen sexting scandals, cyberbullying, and image-based sexual abuse have become commonplace fixtures of the digital age, with many…
adults struggling to identify ways to monitor young people's digital engagement. In When Rape Goes Viral, Anna Gjika argues that rather than focusing on surveillance, we should examine such incidents for what they tell us about youth peer cultures and the gender norms and sexual ethics governing their interactions. Drawing from interviews with teens and high-profile cases of mediated juvenile sexual assault, Gjika exposes the deeply unequal and heteronormative power dynamics informing teens' intimate relationships and online practices, and she critically interrogates the role of digital cultures and broader social values in sanctioning abuse. The book also explores the consequences of social media and digital evidence for young victim-survivors and perpetrators of sexual assault, detailing the paradoxical capacities of technology for social and legal responses to gender-based violence.Gender-Based Violence and the Law: Global Perspectives and Eastern European Practices
Par Agnė Limantė, Artūras Tereškinas, Rūta Vaičiūnienė. 2024
This book presents a novel and insightful examination of gender-based violence, inviting readers to consider this topic from various perspectives.…
It encompasses various conceptual discussions and international regulations and trends, while concurrently emphasising the legal regulations and practices of select Central and Eastern European countries. Significantly underrepresented in legal scholarship, this region has been overlooked and subject to limited comprehensive analyses. The authors address different aspects of gender-based violence, also covering some areas that have received little attention in academic literature, such as gender-based violence in academia and cyberstalking. Furthermore, the book incorporates recent empirical studies, thereby endowing readers with valuable insights into the specific challenges encountered in the region. By contributing to current research on gender-based violence in Europe, this publication is an invaluable resource for researchers, students, policymakers, and general readers interested in gender-based violence and the fight against it in the Central and Eastern European region.Insider Risk and Personnel Security: An introduction
Par Paul Martin. 2024
This textbook analyses the origins and effects of insider risk, using multiple real-life case histories to illustrate the principles, and…
explains how to protect organisations against the risk. Some of the most problematic risks confronting businesses and organisations of all types stem from the actions of insiders – individuals who betray trust by behaving in potentially harmful ways. Insiders cause material damage to their employers and society, and psychological harm to the colleagues and friends they betray. Even so, many organisations do not have a systematic understanding of the nature and origins of insider risk, and relatively few have a coherent and effective system of protective security measures to defend themselves against that risk. This book describes the environmental and psychological factors that predispose some individuals to become harmful insiders, and the most common pathways by which this happens. It considers how aspects of insider risk have been altered by shifts in society, including our increasing reliance on technology and changes in working patterns. The second half of the book sets out a practical systems-based approach to personnel security – the system of defensive measures used to protect against insider risk. It draws on the best available knowledge from industry and academic research, behavioural science, and practitioner experience to explain how to make personnel security effective at managing the risk while enabling the conduct of business. This book will be essential reading for students of risk management, security, resilience, cyber security, behavioural science, HR, leadership, and business studies, and of great interest to security practitioners.White-Collar Crime: An Opportunity Perspective (Criminology and Justice Studies #Vol. 2)
Par Michael Benson, Sally Simpson. 2018
White-Collar Crime: An Opportunity Perspective analyzes white-collar crime within a coherent theoretical framework. Using the opportunity perspective, which assumes that…
all crimes depend on offenders recognizing an opportunity to commit an offense, the authors uncover the processes and situational conditions that facilitate white-collar crimes. In addition, they offer potential solutions to this persistent and widespread social problem without being reductive in their treatment of the difficulties of control. With this third edition, Benson and Simpson have added substantive online teaching materials and expanded their coverage with up-to-date case studies and discussions of recent investigations into white-collar crime and control. These timely updates reaffirm this accessible and rigorous book as a core resource for courses on white-collar crime.Routledge Handbook of Corrections in the United States (Routledge International Handbooks)
