Originally printed as a guide to street slang for men of quality,…
this reference guide will enrich your vocabulary with vulgar witticisms fashionable more than 200 years ago.The avowed purpose of this dictionary was to give men "of fashion" an insight into the inappropriate language of the street. Read in modern times it is by turn uproariously funny and deeply confusing and yet certain truths have remained—the need for the mot juste has not diminished. Many of the words should be brought back into common parlance forthwith: we have no term for the "admiral of the narrow seas," one who from drunkenness vomits into the lap of the person sitting opposite to him. We have perhaps less use for a word for "dobin rig" or "Stealing ribbons from haberdashers early in the morning or late at night; generally practised by women in the disguise of maid servants." Learn how the Georgians and early Victorians would insult each other and find out how some of today's words and derivations have come about in this quirky little volume.Magnolia’s Wedding Journey: A Storybook Planner for Your Special Day

The National Rifle Association Its Tramways and the London & South Western Railway: Targets and Tramways
Par Christopher Bunch. 2019
This unique reference work chronicles the interconnected histories of Britain&’s NRA and the British Railways Companies. The National Rifle…
Association of the United Kingdom was founded in the mid-nineteenth century and was granted a Royal Charter of Incorporation by Queen Victoria in 1890. Created for the encouragement of the Volunteer Rifle Corps and the promotion of rifle shooting throughout Great Britain, its popularity soon influenced the development of railway expansion. The London and South Western Railway Company even built unique tramways to connect the NRA&’s camps and ranges. This book sheds light on the fascinating relationship between the NRA and the British Railways Companies. Beginning in the 1860s, the NRA held annual marksmanship competition at Wimbledon Common, a site chosen for its accessibility from across the existing railway network. The NRA later established its new home at Bisley Camp in Surrey, some 35 miles outside London. The L&SWR built a spur from Brookwood Station and offered a discount on return fair to uniformed volunteers. This splendid and timely book will be invaluable to those visiting the battlefields, sites, museums, memorials and cemeteries of France…
and Belgium. It is intended for those planning and leading school groups and similar parties but is also ideal for individual/family visitors.Rather than list every site etc it provides realistic itineraries to the best places in the two major areas of the Somme and Ypres. Even these are flexible to allow party leaders suitable discretion. The author provides helpful information for each site such as its context in the War, visitor orientation, the 'spiel' (the essential facts to engage, inform and entertain), suggested activity and relevant photos and maps. This combines to make every visit of maximum benefit and interest and yet reduce the workload of the party leaders. There are also valuable tips for lunch breaks, free time ideas and other helpful pointers.Baking Wonderland: A Mix & Match Cookbook for Kids!

Fraternal…
and friendly societies and trade unions—associations that provide mutual aid and benefits—have a long, fascinating history, and the most famous of them—the Freemasons—have a reputation for secrecy, ritual, and intrigue that excites strong interest and has been the subject of widespread misunderstanding. Daniel Weinbren, in this concise, accessible handbook, dispels the myths surrounding them and gives readers insight into their real purposes, their membership, and their development over the centuries. He has also compiled a detailed compendium of books, archives, libraries, and Internet sites that readers and researchers can consult to find out more about these organizations and to trace the involvement and experience of family members who were connected with them. The origins of these societies are explored as are their economic, social, and civic functions, and the impact they had on the lives of members. The range of such societies covered includes the popular and international ones such as the Oddfellows, Foresters and Rechabites, as well as the smaller local fraternal organizations. The type of assistance they offer, their structure and hierarchy, meetings and ceremonies, regalia and processions, and feasts and annual gatherings are all described and explained. So much information about these organizations and their membership is easily available if you know where to look, and Weinbren&’s work is the ideal introduction to them. Anyone who has a forebear who was at some time linked with one of these organizations will find his book to be an essential guide to their research.A Dictionary of Family History: The Genealogists' ABC (A guide For Family Historians Ser.)
