Jack the Ripper & the London Press
Par L. Curtis. 2008
&“Breaks new ground in its examination of the role of newspaper reporting during the police hunt for the first notorious…
serial killer.&”—Reviews in History Press coverage of the 1888 mutilation murders attributed to Jack the Ripper was of necessity filled with gaps and silences, for the killer remained unknown and Victorian journalists had little experience reporting serial murders and sex crimes. This engrossing book examines how fourteen London newspapers—dailies and weeklies, highbrow and lowbrow—presented the Ripper news, in the process revealing much about the social, political, and sexual anxieties of late Victorian Britain and the role of journalists in reinforcing social norms. L. Perry Curtis surveys the mass newspaper culture of the era, delving into the nature of sensationalism and the conventions of domestic murder news. Analyzing the fourteen newspapers—two of which emanated from the East End, where the murders took place—he shows how journalists played on the fears of readers about law and order by dwelling on lethal violence rather than sex, offering gruesome details about knife injuries but often withholding some of the more intimate details of the pelvic mutilations. He also considers how the Ripper news affected public perceptions of social conditions in Whitechapel. &“The apparently motiveless violence of the Whitechapel killings denied journalists a structure, and it is the resulting creativity in news reporting that L Perry Curtis Jr describes. His impressive book makes a genuine contribution to 19th-century history in a way that books addressing the banal question of the identity of the Ripper do not.&”—The GuardianThe Best American Travel Writing 2015 (Best American Ser.)

Par Gavin Fuller and Max Davidson. 2015
An archive of Great Britain’s Daily Telegraph news coverage highlights the major historical events from the Victorian era through the…
twenty-first century.Celebrating 160 years of reporting, this is an anthology of the headlines that the Telegraph made. The paper sent Stanley to Africa and George Smith to discover the Babylonian story of Noah on ancient tablets. The twenty-two-year-old Churchill wrote from the North-West frontier at £5 a column, and Kipling from the front in the First World War. As well as showcasing the talents of many of these eminent correspondents, The Telegraph History of the World gives a fascinating picture of the way people lived and how news was reported. In 1932 when reporting on the German presidential elections the Telegraph’s headline read “Herr Hitler’s Hopes Dashed Forever.” Not all doom and gloom, the royal births and weddings as well as political scandals make for a diverse and interesting collection from late nineteenth century to the early twenty-first century.Enneagram Type 6: The Loyal Guardian (The Enneagram Collection)

Par Albert Jack. 2005
Mad hatter . . . pie in the sky . . . egg on your face. We use these phrases…
every day, yet how many of us know what they really mean or where they came from? From bringing home the bacon to leaving no stone unturned, the English language is peppered with hundreds of common idioms borrowed from ancient traditions and civilizations throughout the world. In Red Herrings and White Elephants, Albert Jack has uncovered the amazing and sometimes downright bizarre stories behind many of our most familiar and eccentric modes of expression:If you happen to be a bootlegger, your profession recalls the Wild West outlaws who sold illegal alcohol by concealing slender bottles of whiskey in their boots. If you're on cloud nine, you owe a nod to the American Weather Bureau's classification of clouds, the ninth topping out all others at a mountainous 40,000 feet. If you opt for the hair of the dog the morning after, you're following the advice of medieval English doctors, who recommended rubbing the hair of a dog into the wound left by the animal's bite.A delightful compendium of anecdotes on everything from minding your p's and q's to pulling out all the stops, Red Herrings and White Elephants is an essential handbook for language-lovers of all ages.Finding Your Voice in Radio, Audio, and Podcast Production
