Five for Freedom: A Study of Feminism in Fiction (Routledge Revivals)
Par Geoffrey Wagner. 1972
First published in 1972 Five for Freedom is a candid study of five European fictional heroines as anticipatory of contemporary…
feminism: Madame de Merteuil of Choderlos de Laclos’ Les Liaisons dangereuses, Jane Eyre, Emma Bovary, Tess of the D’Urbervilles, and Tony Buddenbrook. Professor Wagner clearly believes that, in the first place, the role of women in the development of fiction has been underestimated, while the claims to originality of many recent female liberationists have been equally overestimated. This is a far-ranging, lightly-handled book with insights into both mode of fiction, as it developed and answered women’s demands, and into the role of some of its leading heroines; for Professor Wagner’s studies do not limit themselves strictly to the ‘five for freedom’ but foray into Balzac’s Cousine Bette, Catherine Earnshaw of Wuthering Heights, Anna Karenina, and Eca de Queiroz’s Portuguese Bovary in Cousin Bazilio. This brilliant little study is topical, readable, yet learned. It will be useful for scholars and researchers of literature, Women’s studies, and Gender studies.Architecture and the Environment (Routledge Revivals)
Par Maxwell Fry, Jane Drew. 1976
First published in 1976 Architecture and the Environment is based on the authors very successful Architecture of Children. The original…
book has been completely revised and new illustrations have been specially drawn. This book gives a comprehensive account of the role of architecture in the environment of a constantly developing world. It traces the history of building from its most primitive origins to the complex architecture of the current times. The book takes as a starting- point ideas that will be familiar to all its readers, then leads them on to an examination of the attitudes and approaches of architects and planners, so that they can follow the creative process step by step. The style of the book is direct and very readable, with a minimum of technological language and will be useful for general readers interested in architecture.Personality, Appearance and Speech (Routledge Revivals)
Par T. H. Pear. 1957
First published in 1957, Personality. Appearance and Speech is an intensive analysis of personality reflected by appearance and speech. It…
is a most fascinating study of the innumerable outward signs by which the man in the street judges personality. The author considers the effects this has on daily life; for example, can a person’s real character be assessed by a short interview in which personality, counting for so much, can be altered deliberately to no little extent? He describes many investigations which have attempted to discover experimentally the nature and accuracy of personality and character assessments, and includes personality sketches of F. D. Roosevelt, W. E. Gladstone, and of other prominent figures. He discusses the social results of the microphone and the effect on good and bad taste, of opinions widely expressed by listeners and viewers. The nature and function of the intellectuals who have increasing opportunities of affecting appearance and speech, are examined from the psychologist’s standpoint. This book will be of interest to students of psychology, sociology and social behaviour.Intelligent Robotics and Applications: 16th International Conference, ICIRA 2023, Hangzhou, China, July 5–7, 2023, Proceedings, Part VI (Lecture Notes in Computer Science #14272)

Par Akaby Nassibian. 1984
First published in 1984 Britain and the Armenian Question examines the direction, changes, and ramifications of British policy towards Armenia…
during 1915 to 1923. The author has made extensive use of parliamentary papers and those of the Cabinet, Foreign Office, War Office and India office as well as documents produced by pro- Armenian groups during the period. This material is used to build up a detailed and incontrovertible study of British policy, which shows the extent to which it was governed by self-interest even when support for Armenia was its most altruistic. Once Britain secured predominance in the Persian Gulf, she lost all her interest in Armenian territory and the dilemma was posed when the war ended: not only did she no longer need Armenia but also had to decide who to support in Russia. Armenia lost out on all sides and was compelled eventually to adapt herself to the policies of the surrounding countries. This is an interesting read for scholars and researchers of international relations and international political history. The Third World Calamity (Routledge Revivals)

barriers that have, according to the author, stagnated Western-style socio-economic development in the Third World. The book deals particularly with India, Iran and Nigeria, where the author has gathered a large part of the material. The content of the book and the language used is a reflection of its era and no offence is meant by the Publishers to any reader by this republication. This book will be of interest to students of history, political science, international relations, and geography.Local Content Requirements: Promises and Pitfalls (Routledge-ERIA Studies in Development Economics)
Par Gene M. Grossman, Lili Yan Ing. 2024
As anti-globalization and geopolitical tensions continue to rise, the use of local content requirements (LCRs) around the world has become…
more noticeable than ever before. The reasons for adopting LCRs range from ensuring domestic supply availability, job creation, and increasing value added to safeguarding national security. Ing and Grossman examine country-specific as well as firm-product level exercises to explain how LCRs reduce fair competition, resulting in lower trade and productivity, which ultimately lowers world economic output and overall human welfare. Countries around the world are investigated with specific attention to the US, China, Indonesia, and resource-intensive countries, including mining-intensive ones. The book also presents product- and firm-level analyses, answering the question of why countries adopted LCRs and how LCRs actually affect the world economy. This book is a useful resource that will interest policymakers, researchers, and advanced undergraduates interested in international trade, industrial policy, political economy, labour economics, and development economics.Arts-Based Research Across Textual Media in Education: Expanding Visual Epistemology - Volume 1

Par Roger Brownsword. 2024
This book analyses discontent with law and assesses the prospect of better governance by technology. In the first part of…
the book, where the context is ‘low tech’, the range of discontent with law is examined; the underlying reasons for such discontent are identified (namely, the human nature of the legal enterprise, its reliance on rules, and the pluralistic nature of human communities); and the reasonableness of such discontent is assessed. In the second part of the book, where the context is ‘high-tech’ (with new tools becoming available to undertake governance functions), the question is whether discontent with law is further provoked or, to the contrary, is eased. While new technologies provoke further discontent with law’s claimed authority, its ineffectiveness, and its principles, positions, and policies, they also promise more effective and efficient ways of achieving order. The book closes with some reflections on the ambivalence that humans might experience when faced with the choice between law’s governance and apparently better performing governance by technology. That law’s governance is imperfect is undeniable; that humans should quest after better governance is right; but, the shape of our technological futures is unclear. This accessibly written book will appeal to scholars and students who are working in the broad and burgeoning field of law, regulation, and technology, as well as to legal theorists, political scientists, and sociologists with interests in the impact of new technology. The book discusses ideas concerning the order and balance of nature (or "economy of nature") from the late 17th century…
to the early 20th century. The perspective taken is broad, longue durée and interdisciplinary, and reveals the interplay of scientific, philosophical, moral and social ideas. The story begins with natural theology (dating roughly to the onset of the so-called Newtonian Revolution) and ends with the First World War. The cut-off date has been chosen for the following reasons: the war changed the state of things, affecting man’s way of looking at, and relating to, nature both directly and indirectly; indeed, it put an end to most applications of Darwinism to society and history, including interpretations of war as a form of the struggle for existence. The author presents an overview of the different images of nature that were involved in these debates, especially in the late 19th century, when a large part of the scientific community paid lip service to ‘Darwinism’, while practically each expert felt free to interpret it in his own distinct way. The book also touches on the so-called ‘social Darwinism’, which was neither a real theory, nor a common body of ideas, and its various views of society and nature’s economy. Part of this book deals with the persistence of moralizing images of nature in the work of many authors. One of the main features of the book is its wealth of (detailed) quotations. In this way the author gives the reader the opportunity to see the original statements on which the author bases his discussion. The author privileges the analysis of different positions over a historiography offering a merely linear narrative based on general implications of ideas and theories. To revisit the concept of the so-called "Darwinian Revolution", we need to examine the various perspectives of scientists and others, their language and, so to speak, the lenses they used when reading "facts" and theories. The book ends with some general reflections on Darwin and Darwinisms (the plural is important) as a case study on the relationship between intellectual history, the history of science and contextual history.Written by a historian, this book really gives new, multidisciplinary perspectives on the "Darwinian Revolution."Bipolar for Psychotherapists and Their Clients
Par C. Raymond Lake. 2023
This unique book is needed because it aims to improve the care of Bipolar clients while strengthening the clinical practices…
of non-MD psychotherapists. What is different is the proposal that psychotherapists manage the overall care of Bipolar clients. The increased number of publications about Bipolar over the past decades has enhanced the recognition of Bipolar. As many as 16 million individuals in the US may have a Bipolar episode at some point.Psychiatrists have traditionally managed Bipolar clients but there are not enough psychiatrists and they generally spend only 10 to 15 minutes every one to six months with their clients—often not enough time to recognize oncoming Bipolar episodes. Therapeutic strategy has changed from treating acute episodes to postponing next episodes. Psychotherapists see their clients for 50 minutes every week and are in a better position to recognize developing episodes. Psychotherapists do not prescribe and medicines are usually needed along with psychotherapy for best results. This book encourages psychotherapists to vet and collaborate with prescribers in caring for the therapists’ Bipolar clients.Lacking in the psychotherapists’ armamentarium for treating Bipolar clients is education regarding diagnostic signs, symptoms, and treatment including the most productive medications. This book provides therapists and clients the needed information and encourages academic departments and other psychotherapy programs to institute training about Bipolar Disorders.Liquidity: How to Find it, Regulate it, Get it (Zicklin School of Business Financial Markets Series)
Par Robert A. Schwartz, John Aidan Byrne, Eileen Stempel. 2023
In market structure, we tend to be equity focused, but one of the challenges is liquidity creation. This book examines…
liquidity creation and regulation. Based on the Baruch College Financial Markets Conference, Liquidity: How to Find it, Regulate it, Get it, this book examines the following questions: Where does liquidity come from? How should liquidity be supplied? What is needed when creating a new platform to provide an environment of liquidity? How do you prepare for liquidity provision concerning market investors, regulatory infrastructure, and technical infrastructure? How do you create liquidity in different asset classes? What is the role of the alternative trading system (ATS) structure within the exchange regulatory framework? What global trends are affecting liquidity creation? Also covered are the popularity of indexing, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and Robo-advisers (Robos); how technology is transforming liquidity provision, mid and small-cap liquidity provision and new approaches to liquidity creation. An interview with Former Commissioner of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Michael S. Piwowar is also featured. The Zicklin School of Business Financial Markets Series presents the insights emerging from a sequence of conferences hosted by the Zicklin School at Baruch College for industry professionals, regulators, and scholars. Much more than historical documents, the transcripts from the conferences are edited for clarity, perspective and context; material and comments from subsequent interviews with the panellists and speakers are integrated for a complete thematic presentation. Each book is focused on a well delineated topic, but all deliver broader insights into the quality and efficiency of the U.S. equity markets and the dynamic forces changing them.
Shaping High Quality, Affordable and Equitable Healthcare: Meaningful Innovation and System Transformation (Organizational Behaviour in Healthcare)
