Par Penelope Hetherington. 1978
British Paternalism and Africa (1978) is a study of the beliefs and assumptions of members of the British intelligentsia who…
concerned themselves with British–African politics in the period between the wars. The journals and books published in Britain during this period were used as source material to discover the attitudes of politicians, missionaries, administrators and others concerning ‘African’ issues. In the two decades before the Second World War the debate about the future of the African colonies still seemed to be the preserve of Europeans, anxious to influence British politics according to their own particular brand of paternalism. It is argued that some writers still used arguments about Britain’s ‘civilizing’ mission, while others emphasised the need for a period of reconstruction of African society, to be carried out before independence could be granted. Only the Marxist-Leninist writers rejected doctrines which implied the necessity for continued European presence in Africa.Women in Telecommunications (Women in Engineering and Science)

Par China National Academy of Edu., Sciences. 2023
This book aims to reflect the digital transformation of Chinese education toward smart education comprehensively and accurately. It is the…
first systematic summary of the progress of smart education in China. The book believes that smart education is a new education form in the digital era and is essentially distinct from education forms in the industrial era. This new education form is innovative in five dimensions. First is the new core concept. Smart education is not only a concrete action concerning people’s well-being, but also a vital strategy concerning national plans. Through technology empowerment and data drive, it empowers educational reform in all aspects, systematically constructs a new relationship between education and society, provides suitable education for each learner, and makes the aptitude-based teaching that we have been dreaming of for thousands of years a reality. For the first time in history, smart education helps to reach the full alignment between individual development and societal development. Second is the new system structure. Smart education will break through the boundaries of school education, drive the diversified combination of various education types, resources, and elements, promote the collaboration of school, family, and society in education, and build a high-quality, individualized lifelong learning system that is available for anyone anywhere anytime. Third is the new teaching paradigm. Smart education will integrate physical, social, and digital spaces to create new learning scenarios and promote human–technology integration, and cultivate cross-grade, cross-class, and cross-discipline learning communities across time and space to organically combine large-scale education with individualized cultivation. Fourth is the new educational content. Smart education will focus on developing all-round education, establishing digital knowledge graphs based on systematic logics of knowledge points, and innovating content presentation methods to make learning a wonderful experience and help learners develop higher-order thinking skills, comprehensive innovation capability, and lifelong learning ability. Fifth is the new education governance. With data governance at the core and digital intelligence technology as the driver, smart education will boost the holistic reengineering of education administration and business processes and enhance the modernization of the education governance system and governance capacity. This book is intended for teachers, education administrators, education policymakers, education researchers, and parents concerned about education innovation and development, as well as people from all walks of life who have aspirations for the education industry. It can also serve as a reference for international organizations and education research institutions of all countries to promote the joint exploration of the development path of smart education and create a better future for the world’s mutual development through educational reform.European Handbook of Dermatological Treatments

a review of the content. Taking into consideration recent advances in systemic and topical treatments, state-of-the-art lasers, and the latest evidence-based recommendations, it now includes biologic agents for psoriasis and their use as off-label treatments in other skin disorders, targeted agents for malignant melanoma and basal cell carcinoma, and new treatment modalities for rosacea, acne, atopic dermatitis, and urticaria, to name but a few. The European Handbook of Dermatological Treatments provides concise, up-to-date overviews of treatment guidelines and clinical pearls for a large number of skin diseases. It is divided into three main sections addressing the many different skin diseases, the drugs available for dermatological treatments, and the various methods applied in dermatology, including fillers, botulinum toxin, lasers, dermoscopy, cryosurgery, and electrosurgery. Written by a recognized expert in the field, each chapter focuses on a particular skin disease, illustrating current treatments while providing a brief synopsis of the etiology and clinical presentation of the disease. Treatment indications and contraindications, modes of action, and dosages are clearly identified and the content is enhanced by a wealth of clinical pictures and tables, making it an engaging tool for professionals, and a valuable learning resource for young practitioners, as well as postgraduate students and residents. The use of cloud applications is becoming increasingly popular due to their scalability and cost advantages. However, companies need help…
in adopting cloud applications due to their internal policies and compliance requirements. Trust and security are crucial factors that influence the adoption of cloud applications. This book proposes a cloud architecture that addresses this challenge by shifting the trust for compliance-driven configurations of cloud applications from the cloud application provider to the blockchain. The architecture was developed using design science research and evaluated using mixed-method semi-structured guided interviews. The results show that the proposed architecture can significantly reduce adoption risk due to compliance-driven cloud application configurations, shifting trust from the cloud provider to the blockchain. This book presents an innovative approach to address the challenge of adopting cloud applications, and enhancing trust and security for businesses. The Question of Life's Meaning: An African Perspective
Par Aribiah David Attoe. 2023
In answering the question of life’s meaning, the African perspective is only just beginning to emerge. While this is true,…
a critical examination of African theories of meaningfulness, the possibility of life’s meaninglessness, as well as ideas about the proper mode/mood for living with the meaninglessness of life are largely underexplored within the African philosophical tradition. This book provides several plausible accounts of meaning in/of life from an African perspective, examines the relationship between death and life’s meaningfulness, and explores the possibility of life’s meaninglessness, proposing the “philosophy of indifference” as the proper mode/mood for living with the meaninglessness of life.Comparative Modernism and Poetics of Time: Bergson, Tanpinar, Benjamin, Walser (New Comparisons in World Literature)
Par Özen Nergis Dolcerocca. 2023
This book explores the conceptualization of time in early twentieth-century literature and thought, based on a transnational and translational model of…
literary history, focusing on Turkish, French and German literary traditions. Each from different cultural backgrounds, these modernists provide a radical critique of modern time regimes, which calibrate time in singular temporal narratives. The book traces the philosophical strand of this critical chronometry from Henri Bergson’s theory of time, through Walter Benjamin’s ambivalence towards decay of tradition, and finally to A.H. Tanpınar and Robert Walser’s modernist fiction. Negotiating regionally marked concepts and topoi of temporality, it discusses networks of cultural circulations and maps a revised intersection of Turkish and Western European literary histories. It is an essential read for scholars and students of comparative and world literature, modernist studies, and cultural history.New Earth Histories: Geo-Cosmologies and the Making of the Modern World
Par Dipesh Chakrabarty. 2023
A kaleidoscopic rethinking of how we come to know the earth. This book brings the history of the geosciences…
and world cosmologies together, exploring many traditions, including Chinese, Pacific, Islamic, South and Southeast Asian conceptions of the earth’s origin and makeup. Together the chapters ask: How have different ideas about the sacred, animate, and earthly changed modern environmental sciences? How have different world traditions understood human and geological origins? How does the inclusion of multiple cosmologies change the meaning of the Anthropocene and the global climate crisis? By carefully examining these questions, New Earth Histories sets an ambitious agenda for how we think about the earth. The chapters consider debates about the age and structure of the earth, how humans and earth systems interact, and how empire has been conceived in multiple traditions. The methods the authors deploy are diverse—from cultural history and visual and material studies to ethnography, geography, and Indigenous studies—and the effect is to highlight how earth knowledge emerged from historically specific situations. New Earth Histories provides both a framework for studying science at a global scale and fascinating examples to educate as well as inspire future work. Essential reading for students and scholars of earth science history, environmental humanities, history of science and religion, and science and empire.Nichts im Leben und im Projektmanagement geht genau nach Plan. Par Pardis Dabashi. 2023
An examination of the relationship between literature and classical Hollywood cinema reveals a profound longing for plot in modernist fiction.…
The modernist novel sought to escape what Virginia Woolf called the “tyranny” of plot. Yet even as twentieth-century writers pushed against the constraints of plot-driven Victorian novels, plot kept its hold on them through the influence of another medium: the cinema. Focusing on the novels of Nella Larsen, Djuna Barnes, and William Faulkner—writers known for their affinities and connections to classical Hollywood—Pardis Dabashi links the moviegoing practices of these writers to the tensions between the formal properties of their novels and the characters in them. Even when they did not feature outright happy endings, classical Hollywood films often provided satisfying formal resolutions and promoted normative social and political values. Watching these films, modernist authors were reminded of what they were leaving behind—both formally and in the name of aesthetic experimentalism—by losing the plot.So Much Stuff: How Humans Discovered Tools, Invented Meaning, and Made More of Everything
Par Chip Colwell. 2023
How humans became so dependent on things and how this need has grown dangerously out of control. Over three…
million years ago, our ancient ancestors realized that rocks could be broken into sharp-edged objects for slicing meat, making the first knives. This discovery resulted in a good meal, and eventually changed the fate of our species and our planet. With So Much Stuff, archaeologist Chip Colwell sets out to investigate why humankind went from self-sufficient primates to nonstop shoppers, from needing nothing to needing everything. Along the way, he uncovers spectacular and strange points around the world—an Italian cave with the world’s first known painted art, a Hong Kong skyscraper where a priestess channels the gods, and a mountain of trash that rivals the Statue of Liberty. Through these examples, Colwell shows how humanity took three leaps that led to stuff becoming inseparable from our lives, inspiring a love affair with things that may lead to our downfall. Now, as landfills brim and oceans drown in trash, Colwell issues a timely call to reevaluate our relationship with the things that both created and threaten to undo our overstuffed planet.Manifestación sin tanto rollo: Te cuento todo, aquí no hay secretos
