Puck of Pook's Hill
Par Rudyard Kipling, Marcus Sedgwick. 2014
From the author of The Jungle Book comes a magical fantasy story, rich in historical detail and filled with intrigue…
and excitementUna and Dan, reciting Shakespeare on a summer's evening in rural Sussex, unwittingly summon the elf Puck. They are taken on a fantastic journey through Britain's past, their magical companion plucking from history an array of fascinating characters for them to meet: Parnesius, a Roman centurion who manned Hadrian's wall; Wayland, a Saxon warrior and blacksmith; Sir Richard, a Norman knight who made an extraordinary journey to Africa; and many others. Each offers a story from his own life, mixing war and politics with adventure and intrigue. Each is rich with historical detail. One of the great classics of children's literature, Puck of Pook's Hill is by turns a fantastical story of magical otherness and a compelling exploration of history. A runaway success on first publication, it still has the power to excite children and their parents alike.Nueva York. extraordinarios. It is 1814, and Napoleon Bonaparte retreats to Paris following the debacle of his Russian invasion. Once there, the leader is met with more resistance—a plot to restore a royal to the throne of France succeeds and a humiliated Napoleon is forced to abdicate and go into exile. Octave Senecal, Napoleon&’s loyal aide and savior, tells the tale of their journey south through the angry, mob-filled countryside to Elba, a tiny island off the coast of Tuscany. Horribly bored by this turn of events, Napoleon passes the time gambling with his mother, spearing the occasional tuna with local fishermen, and fretting constantly that secret agents and murderers surround him. San Francisco's LGBTQ+ scene.Bob Glück met Ed Aulerich-Sugai in 1970. Ed was an aspiring artist; Bob wanted to write. They were young men in San Francisco at the high tide of sexual liberation and soon, and for eight years, they were lovers, after which they were friends. Ed was an explorer in the realms of sex. He was beautiful, fragile, exasperating, serious, unassuaged. In 1994 he died of HIV. His dream notebooks became a touchstone for this book, which Glück has been working on for some two decades, while also making his name as a proponent of New Narrative writing and as one of America&’s most unusual, venturesome, and lyrical authors. About Ed is about Ed, who remains, as our dead do, both familiar and unknowable, faraway and close. It is about Bob too. The book is a hybrid, at once fiction and fact, like memory, and it takes in many things through tales of political activism and domestic comedy and fury to questions of art and love and experiences of longing and horror. The book also shifts in register, from the delicate to the analytic, to funny and explicit and heartbroken. It begins in the San Francisco of the early 1980s, when Ed and Bob have been broken up for a while. aIds is spreading, but Ed has yet to receive his diagnosis. It follows him backward through his life with Bob in the 1970s and forward through the harrowing particulars of death. It holds on to him and explores his art. It ends in his dreams. The General and Julia: A Novel

president while writing his memoirs and reckoning with his complicated legacy in this epic and intimate work of &“superb historical fiction&” (Booklist, starred review).Barely able to walk and rendered mute by the cancer metastasizing in his throat, Ulysses S. Grant is scratching out words, hour after hour, day after day. Desperate to complete his memoirs before his death so his family might have some financial security and he some redemption, Grant journeys back in time. He had once been the savior of the Union, the general to whom Lee surrendered at Appomattox, a twice-elected president who fought for the civil rights of Black Americans and against the rising Ku Klux Klan, a plain farmer-turned-business magnate who lost everything to a Wall Street swindler, a devoted husband to his wife Julia, and a loving father to four children. In this gorgeously rendered and moving novel, Grant rises from the page in all of his contradictions and foibles, his failures and triumphs. Moving from blood-stained battlefields to Gilded Age New York, the novel explores how Grant&’s own views on race and Reconstruction changed over time. &“A graceful, moving narrative&” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) from historical fiction master Jon Clinch, this evocatively crafted novel breathes fresh life into an American icon. The Woman on the Bridge: the poignant and escapist historical novel about fighting for the people you love

early twentieth century.Anatole&’s Story is a biographical novel about author Polly Broussard Martin&’s father-in-law, Anatole Martin, and his spiritual journey, which transformed the religious landscape of the areas below Houma, Louisiana. Polly Broussard Martin writes with poignancy about Anatole&’s unwavering faith in the Bible and his lifelong devotion to serving God. Anatole&’s life began on April 23rd, 1882, in Bayou Blue, Louisiana, during a time when almost all South Louisianians were devout Catholics. He picked up his father&’s Bible, one given to him by a Confederate soldier, and began to read. This first experience with the Bible led to his lifetime quest for spiritual truth and his dedication to spreading Christ&’s message to his Cajun and Indian neighbors. Without any prior religious instruction, Anatole founded his own church, the Spiritual Church. He often traveled through the marshy, and sometimes dangerous, swamps in only a small pirogue, wanting to leave no one untouched by the gospel. After learning of the Methodist faith, Anatole became a Methodist convert. But in 1930, Anatole decided to enroll in correspondence classes to further his knowledge of the Baptist faith and was ordained a Baptist minister in 1936. His life was spent leading his neighbors into deeper spiritual lives, always looking to his Bible as his mentor. This tenderly crafted novel serves not only as the story of one man&’s extraordinary bond with his Bible, but also as a vital piece of historical literature on South Louisiana. Anatole&’s untiring efforts to spread the gospel to his fellow Cajuns built the solid religious foundation on which South Louisianians now stand.
