Firearms Control: A Study of Armed Crime and Firearms Control in England and Wales (Routledge Revivals)
Par Colin Greenwood. 1972
First published in 1972 Firearms Control is the result of research carried out at the Cambridge University Institute of Criminology,…
looks at the various problems involved in firearms control. Chief Inspector Greenwood, a serving police officer, makes use, in his investigation of the problem, of fascinating material not previously published or largely forgotten. He reveals massive and dangerous shortcomings in the official statistics, and his detailed and original findings show how badly the problem has been misunderstood. He examines closely current legislation and current policies, showing the effort they involve and the product of that effort. The findings of Firearms Control call into question many of the attitudes and theories which have hitherto been unquestioningly accepted. Colin Greenwood here recommends radical changes both in legislative and administrative attitudes to firearms control, with a view to reducing the burden on the police there by permitting them to devote their time to methods which are likely to be productive. The book will command attention of legislators and police, sociologists, statisticians, lawyers, and laymen.Triangle of Death: The Inside Story of the Triads – The Chinese Mafia (Routledge Revivals)

Par Christopher A. Mallett. 2016
The expanded use of zero-tolerance policies and security measures in schools has exponentially increased arrests and referrals to the juvenile…
courts, often for typical adolescent developmental behaviors and low-level misdemeanors. This is the first truly comprehensive assessment of the "school-to-prison pipeline," a term that refers to the increased risk for certain individuals, disproportionately from minority and impoverished communities, to end up ensnared in the criminal justice system because of excessively punitive disciplinary policies in schools. Written by one of the foremost experts on this topic, the book examines school disciplinary policies and juvenile justice policies that contribute to the pipeline, describes its impact on targeted, both intentionally and unintentionally, children and adolescents, and recommends a more supportive and rehabilitative model that challenges the criminalization of education and punitive juvenile justice. The book outlines effective policies, interventions, and preventative efforts that can be used to improve school climates and safety. The author includes specific recommendations for delinquency, detention, and incarceration prevention. The text incorporates a vast store of empirical knowledge from all relevant fields of study and includes research citations for more in-depth study. Case examples illuminate the plight of adolescents enmeshed in these systems along with effective interventions. The book is a vital resource for undergraduate and graduate students of social work and criminal justice as well as for juvenile court and school personnel and policymakers."The President Has Been Shot!": The Assassination Of John F. Par Ronald Weitzer. 2023
An in-depth portrait of Thailand’s billion-dollar sex industryThailand is known internationally as a popular sex tourism destination. Yet, despite its…
size and reputation, remarkably little research has focused on the country’s sex industry over the past two decades. Based on original ethnographic data and other sources, Sex Tourism in Thailand is an expansive yet nuanced study of diverse sex markets and their moral economies.Ronald Weitzer shows that although some of the central pillars of Thailand’s sex industry remain unaltered over the past four decades, in other respects there has been a profound transformation. In the sector oriented toward foreign visitors, the number of sex businesses and independent operators has grown numerically and geographically; customers are increasingly diverse in race and nationality; paid sexual encounters are no longer confined to young Thai women and older white men; transgender women comprise a significant share of the workforce; and technological advances give participants more autonomy than ever before. Sex Tourism in Thailand explores these developments in conjunction with related structural and experiential dimensions in an illuminating account of sexual commerce in Southeast Asia.Love Lockdown: Dating, Sex, and Marriage in America's Prisons

Par Witold Klaus, Irena Rzeplińska, Dagmara Woźniakowska-Fajst. 2023
Criminal Careers follows the lives and criminal behaviours of 2,397 people in Poland who as juveniles committed a crime and…
received a form of punishment from the juvenile court between the late 1980s and the year 2000. Through combining quantitative and qualitative research, their criminal careers, the differences between men and women, risk factors, and reasons for nondesistance are analysed. Uniquely, the authors have used an extensive database of former juveniles, in which as many as 40% were women. This book therefore makes a comparison between women and men in terms of their future life paths. Additionally, the researched group consisted of teenagers from two different periods: the 1980s (the transition generation) and 2000 (the millennial generation), which in the context of Central and Eastern European countries means that they entered adulthood in completely different realities. These differences are therefore also explored in depth within the book. By focusing on Poland, the book provides a different perspective to criminal career research, which is generally limited to a few countries in Western Europe and the United States. The book will be of great interest to academics and students who are developing their own research in the fields of criminal careers, juvenile delinquency, and antisocial behaviours by young people. It will also appeal to professionals, including juvenile judges, probation officers, staff in correctional facilities and social rehabilitation institutions, social workers and employees of nonprofit organisations that support juveniles, people in crisis, and prisoners or exprisoners.Environmental Criminology: Evolution, Theory, and Practice
Par Martin A. Andresen. 2024
The field of environmental criminology is a staple theoretical framework in contemporary criminological theory. This fully revised and expanded edition…
of the world’s first comprehensive and sole-authored textbook on this influential school of criminological thought covers a wide range of topics, including: the origins of environmental criminology; the primary theoretical frameworks, such as social disorganization theory, the routine activity approach, geometry of crime, rational choice perspective, and multilevel models that integrate environmental criminology; the practical application of environmental criminology; an examination of how theories are operationalized and tested; and policy implications for the practice of crime prevention. As well as these popular topics, Martin Andresen also discusses a number of topics that are at the leading edge of research within environmental criminology. New to the third edition is an expanded coverage on multilevel models of environmental criminology, harm indices, crime mapping, hot-spot policing, and future directions in environmental criminology. This text will be ideal for courses on crime prevention, where students are often encouraged to consider policy problems and apply theory to practice. This book offers up environmental criminology as a theoretical framework for making sense of complex neighborhood problems, so it is also perfect for courses on geography of crime, crime analysis, and, indeed, environmental criminology. It would also be a good supplement for courses on criminological theory.Cyber Malware: Offensive and Defensive Systems (Security Informatics and Law Enforcement)

It suffers from definitional and implementation problems. One facet, the focus of this book,…
is the transnational nature of much of the crime, and the need for practitioners to operate across borders to combat it. Europe has taken a distinctive approach to cross border law enforcement and judicial cooperation, which could be used as a model in other areas of the world. This publication examines these problems from a Council of Europe and European Union perspective, including the now post-Brexit UK. The UK has adopted a distinctive approach to legislating and operationalising its trafficking in human beings (THB) legal frameworks, also legislating for “slavery, servitude, forced and compulsory labour”, resulting in distinctive results in internal UK law enforcement. It is argued here that this approach and the results should inform THB legislative and operational developments more widely. Further action in legal and operational frameworks is, however, clearly needed and the book advocates the adoption of a human security “freedom from fear” approach. Ultimately, the interaction of different legal frameworks, and different jurisdictions requires transnational practitioners to adopt a constructivist approach, as was adopted for the development of the internal EU area of freedom, security and justice. The book will be of interest to academics, researchers and policy-makers working in the areas of transnational law, migration law, criminology and international relations.Cases in Clinical Forensic Psychology
Par Margo C. Watt. 2024
Clinical forensic psychology is defined by the application of clinical psychology – assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and consultation – in legal…
contexts. The term captures the integration of clinical psychology as an applied professional discipline and forensic psychology as an experimental discipline. Cases in Clinical Forensic Psychology offers a series of case studies that allow readers to take an up-close and personal look at the criminal justice system in Canada. Clinical forensic psychologist Margo C.Watt examines the particulars of each case, including the biological, psychological, social, cultural, and legal factors. The book takes an evidence-based approach and highlights how the science of clinical forensic psychology informs all aspects of criminal cases: police investigative techniques, eyewitness testimony, pretrial publicity, jury selection and decision-making, forensic evaluations, psychological autopsies, mental health in corrections, and mo.re. Examining incidents ranging from false confessions to wrongful convictions to deaths in custody and the criminals who got away, Cases in Clinical Forensic Psychology questions how and why these events happened and considers what we can learn from them. The SOULS of Black Faculty and Staff in the American Academy: Principles for Transformation and Retention
Par Yvette M. Alex-Assensoh. 2023
This book employs a fiction-based approach to address the revolving door of Black faculty and staff in American colleges and…
universities as a national crisis that needs to be resolved systematically. Alex-Assensoh coins the acronym SOULS to promote the importance of safety, organizational accountability, unvarnished truth telling, love, and spirituality as the foundational ingredients for reimagining and rebuilding an Academy that harnesses the talents of Black faculty and staff. Chapters feature storytelling to illustrate common cracks in academic structures while interweaving interdisciplinary research to contextualize themes that the fiction-based method reveals. To conclude, the author provides a research-informed call to action within the context of institutional transformation, as well as reflective questions and recommendations for further reading. This book investigates the cross-border trade in illicit drug crops in the global south. It exposes an important paradox: despite…
all the dangers and negative consequences of these criminal networks, in many cases, they also provide marginalised and excluded communities with important private sources of protection, investment, and employment. This book reconstructs and compares socioeconomic contexts, criminal careers, and changes in farmgate prices of illicit coca and opium poppy crops in Afghanistan, Myanmar, Colombia, and Bolivia. It investigates the politics of strange bedfellows; informal bankers-without-suits providing cross-border financial services to the undocumented and the unbanked; the criminals without borders; and the mystery of illicit crop prices. The book challenges commonly held assumptions and casts new light on how relationships of conflict and accommodation are arranged and re-arranged in fluid, ever-changing contexts, producing often paradoxical outcomes. It then suggests policy reforms and alternative approaches to drug policy, development aid, and peacebuilding work. Researchers and students across development, peacebuilding, illicit economies, and conflict studies will find this book an important source of original research and analysis. It will also be useful for politicians, commentators and public officials considering what to do differently in tackling illicit drug economies.Hate Crime in Football: How Racism Is Destroying the Beautiful Game
